This definitely nails the romantic Greek summer aesthetic, but the actual story is so formulaic. Vibes only.
Beautiful artwork - especially love the Greek white and blues - highlight an engaging story that builds towards a somewhat predictable conclusion. This is not something that will stick with me, but certainly a worthwhile read for young adults that will hopefully inspire some trips to the Greek isles.
The scenery and Greek island depiction on this was gorgeous! However, the plot was a bit lacking, as the plotwist arrives and leaves us with more questions than anything else. I'm not sure I'd classify this as YA either.
Confused .... I think I get the situation with the folks who hosted Rachel and, more critically, how Ben fits into things. But I'm still not sure. I guess adultery and open relationships was too much to spell out, but I kind of wanted that.
The graphic novel moves well. I was able to get into the story and follow the plot. The artwork was not really to my liking and made things a bit confusing, although that may have been deliberate because maybe Rachel is supposed to be a younger Diane for her husband's sake. The creep vibe I was expecting, though, never really materialized and looking back, I don't think that Peter was shooting for a summer "fling" with a younger woman, but I could be wrong. I do think that there are some grooming elements in the story and that the age of Ben and Rachel bordered on uncomfortably close to pedophilia.
So, still confused. Was Rachel there as Peter's hook up? Was she there to be Rachel's younger friend? Was she truly there to get involved with Ben? So many questions. So few answers. And a few spoilers I guess.
Rachel was well developed as a character, and again, the story moved well and was readable.
A comic for teenagers and YA, but those of an older age will also enjoy this comic. The artwork, especially the chosen colour palate, is perfect to allow the reader to believe they have a front row for a Greek teenage love story. The story seems simple, teenager on holiday in Greece with friends of her family falling in love. But as the story unfolds there is an an unsettling air that everything is not as it seems. Will summer love prevail or a heart be broken. Read and find out.Thank you to Image Comics and NetGalley for the comic ARC. The views expressed are all mine, freely given.
I’m not quite sure what to think of this one. Firstly, the illustrations are really quite beautiful and evocative of the hot, sunny Greek island where the story takes place. The story? It’s pretty uneventful. The plot is pretty simple, with 16-year-old Rachel being taken under the wing of her father’s old friends the Wagners, with whom she spends the summer in Greece. And there they swim in the ocean, eat and drink, and go to parties. There’s a plot twist that isn’t fully realized and then the story abruptly ends, without any kind of real resolution. So all in all, nice illustrations, sub-par plot.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a beautifully illustrated graphic novel that really evokes summery feelings, however the story itself has very little substance. The relationships at the heart of this story are quite unsettling and there is no real resolution to this.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this advanced copy
bruh.
that's literally what this book felt like when I finished reading it. the beginning and setup has a sinister vibe that feels like it's preparing you for something big and horrific and ultimately shocking, but NO.
not even the initial "climax" if that's even what you can call it. it was so anticlimactic and there's no point in reading it at all. everything builds up just to fall back down to square one. this could have been a five star book if it weren't for the whole, half hearted, lazy plot.
