"Murder on the Dance Floor" the novel (not the song by Sophie Ellis Bextor) is a rather salacious view of the world of competitive ballroom and Latin dancing. It is not the genteel world one might imagine from watching Strictly Come Dancing, where all the dancers seem to be very supportive of each other.
This is essentially a who dunnit, with plenty of red herrings and lots of dance set-pieces. The lead characters are Lily Raymond (Shirley Ballas?) and her ex-pupils Susie and Jack. Other "players" include dancers, judges, a sponsor, and hair and make-up artists.
This is a lightweight thriller to curl up with on a dreary day and escape to a more "glamorous" world.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publishers for the opportunity to review this book.
Thank you to net galley and Harper Collins for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was really keen to read this, being a fan of the Author and of Strictly Come Dancing, but unfortunately the book did not live up to my expectations. I couldn't warm to any of the characters - they felt very wooden and the story just didn't grip me. It also didn't help that the publisher's mark on every few lines was very distracting so made it feel even more of a slog to read.
Loved the background of the ballroom dancing world. Shirley brings out all the tensions and jealousies in the dancing world and all the hard work from the dancers. Good story line. If you enjoy Strictly and a good murder mystery, you’ll enjoy this!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this eARC of 'Murder on the Dance Floor' by Shirley Vallas.
I try to be as kind as I physically can when it comes to reviews but I really didn't like this book. 'Murder on the Dance Floor' is Strictly Head Judge Shirley Ballas' first novel and it showed. It felt unpolished mixed in with word dumps that felt unnecessary. I really didn't enjoy this. Is there a fan base for this book? Probably, but I ain't one of them.
I was looking forward to reading this book as I love Strictly but sadly it wasn't for me. I couldn't get into the storyline nor could I gel with the characters. I don't know whether it was because it was written by two people but overall it was a toil to read personally.
Thank you to Netgalley and HQ for this ARC, just sorry I didn't enjoy it.
I thought I would love this book, as I am a huge Strictly fan, but sadly not. I could not get into the story, which seemed to be all over the place. It was crammed with cliched characters, and daft scenarios.
I gave up around 25%, I did not enjoy the writing style. Perhaps having two authors was the issue for me, I really don’t know.
I’m sure it will be enjoyed by many readers, it’s just not for me.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my advance copy of this book.
A wild ride through the dark underbelly of the dance world. Sex, lies, murder -- what more could you want???
An interesting quick read, if strictly is your thing then you are going to love this book! On a personal level it was not for me, I found it had notes of wanting to be a bit Jilly Cooperesque, romance abounds, nooky in cleaning cupboards, sexist men and beautiful women, many with simmering jealousy etc.
The murder mystery angle was more cozy murder with smatterings of humour thrown in and good fun to read.
Thank you to Netgalley the author and publishers for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review
I really thought I would love this book as I am a huge Strictly fan however the book is just not for me. I was unable to follow what or who was who.and wasn't keen on the writing style
I feel sure I will be in the minority and that this book will be loved by many.
I would like to thank NetGalley for the ARC. for which I have given my unbiased review.
I really enjoyed this book. Being a lover of ballroom dancing, and all things Strictly, I couldn't put the book down. As well as the thrill of the dance competitions, the romance (or not.) of the partners, there is also murders to solve.
I really do hope that this book is the first in a series, featuring Lily and Susie, I can't wait to read the next one.
Loved this twisty turny Murder mystery set in the ruthless world of ballroom dancing. The characters were well formed, the red herrings everywhere, and the underlying threads of issues in the dancing world kept the story grounded. Pacing was great and I couldn’t put it down. Can’t wait for the next one!
An enjoyable read. More lighthearted than the usual 'who done it',
There is a murderer at large, bumping off the dancers as they perform.
Lily, the main character who was an ex world dance champion and now a celebrated dance teacher, resolves to find the culprit, putting herself and the private investigator (who had been a dance champion herself) in danger.
There are of course a selection of suspects, vivid descriptions of dresses, a Blackpool setting, together with a touch of romance along the way that kept my interest.
Shirley's knowledge,,passion and love for ballroom dancing shines through, and though this is a work of fiction. it is fascinating to take a look behind the scenes prior to competition time.
If you are a 'Strictly' fan, get reading.
Passion, sequins, dancing and murder: hopefully this isn’t a real insight into the world of competitive dancing. Many of the characters seem perfectly capable of murder or at very least doing anything and everything to get past their rivals to get the top prize: winning at Blackpool. Lily seemed to be based on Shirley and Jack and susie were perfect heroes in this novel. A high octane reveal in Blackpool tower made this a great murder mystery. A return for our intrepid investigators perhaps? I hope so.
A really good, almost joyous, romp with a few murders thrown in. The characters are vile, hung up on drugs, lies, or voodoo dolls with a few pure at heart fighting the good fight, an excellent glimpse into what might be the torrid belly of professional dance and a nice romantic undercurrent to add tenderness.
Thank you to #netgalley and the publishers for allowing me to read an advance copy. As a former competitive ballroom dancer myself, I enjoyed every second - those memories of Blackpool! No-one could bring that to life better than Shirley Ballas. It’s a glamorous and intriguing whodunnit, with an interwoven love story (more than one, actually) encapsulating the passion that dancers have for their art and the vicious underlying competitive edge, often hidden to observers who aren’t in on what goes on behind the scenes. Appealing characters, a well structured plot and a great climax. More please Shirley!
This is the stunning debut novel by Strictly Come Dancing's Shirley Ballas. Set in the glamorous ballroom dancing world this tells the story of a murder that happens and the hunt for the person who did it.
I hope Shirley has a second book next year as this one was unputdownable and I loved it.
As a huge Strictly fan I was thrilled to see a book by the infamous Shirley Ballas. I’m not much of a mystery person, but I knew I couldn’t pass this one up! I also knew our readers would love devouring this one as well.
I was so excited to see if Lily and Susie could solve the mystery of the young dancer. It was such a great read full of fun, mystery, sequins, and of course dance! Beyond excited to acquire this and share it with our readers. Also excited this is going to be part of a series.
Firstly thank you Netgalley for this Arc
Loved the book as I always loved Strictly. Murder mystery at its best
Ok. So my review for this book will be a little different from my usual style.
Firstly, my experience with the ebook was not great! I kept being taken out of the story because the publisher's name kept appearing randomly between sentences.
The actual story was entertaining! I loved the writing style and as a dance lover, I adore books written by professional dancers as the love for the art is flowing in the page! The nuances and attention to detail is great. Add In a murder mystery? Even better! I'll definitely be ordering myself a copy and be checking out other books by the author.
