Thank you Storm Publishing and Netgalley sorry it took me so long to read.
My first book by Nicky and it really didn't disappoint.
A well written novel and I really liked the character of DI Jack Kent. I devoured this book and am pleased there were unfinished threads which hopefully means there are more books to follow.
DI Jack Ken is a great addition to British crime fiction.
Read this.
My thanks to the Author publisher's and NetGalley for providing me with a Kindle version of this book to read and honestly review.
A clever intelligent well written Police procedural introducing Detective Inspector Jack Kent, who just happens to be a renowned mountain climber. Well drawn characters throughout always engaging and intriguing.
I assumed the Author must also be a climber, but reading the Author's notes soon proved me wrong so full marks for research too.
Completely recommended.
A very well written crime novel. DI Jack Kent is an excellent addition to the genre. As well as being a police officer she is a very accomplished mountain climber with tragedy in her past which still haunts her.A lot of good work has been done to provide background and to introduce some good and repeatable characters which augers well for for future books in the series.
Searching for a burglar who scales high rise buildings in Birmingham Jack needs to use her connections in the Birmingham climbing community to bring the case to its conclusion. There are unfinished threads which surely will be further explored in future books. Books which I will look forward to reading.
I can heartily recommend this to all readers of British crime fiction.
Book one in Detective Jack Kent series and I am already looking forward to more books in this series.
NetGalley ARC review
This was a pretty decent read. I found it to be a little clunky at points but overall the story was good.
I thought that there was maybe one too many points of the plot, for example I didn’t see a point to adding the mayor/son case. It didn’t seem necessary to the main idea of the story and added just some extra characters that weren’t needed.
Overall I would recommend this and might pick up the next in the detective series.
This was a quick read for me and one that was exciting, intriguing and the first book of a new series. I enjoyed the fact that it wasn't too long and was easy enough to read.
I enjoyed Detective Jack Kent, there are mutli-layers to her story and this brings something a bit extra to the story. The story kept me reading and I now look forward to seeing what comes next. A good start for a new series and I think it will only get better from here.
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Silent Fall
I just had a challenging time getting into this story but persevered to the end. I can honestly say this book was not for me as I could not engage with the characters or the storylines, and for these reasons only. Thanks to NetGalley and to the publishers of this book for giving me a free advance copy of the book to preview and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thanks to netgalley for providing this advanced copy for the purpose of review.
This was an enjoyable police procedural with an original storyline.
I really enjoyed this first book in a new series. DI Jack Kent is investigating a series of burglaries in high rise flats where the culprit is climbing the outside of the building to gain access. Jack herself is an elite mountain climber. When a woman is found murdered in her flat the stakes are raised. This is a real page turner which will keep you guessing to the end. I will certainly read further books in the series. Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Copied to Goodreads.
Good police procedural. Jack is a climber and it appears that the burglar in this case is too. Then people are found dead . There is lots going on in this book, perhaps too much and there are also a lot of characters.
Some issues are not completely tied up though and I thought Nadia's situation was dealt with too easily.
A great start to a series , hope to read more.
Thanks to Net Galley and Storm publishing for tge ARC
I enjoyed listening 🎧 to the book. I'm gonna check out the rest of the series. This author was need to me.
Thank you NetGalley for this advanced reader copy. Spectacularly written novel holding you hostage with suspense until the very end. Great characters and intriguing story lines. Definitely recommend.
Almost a story of 2 parts- Jack and her struggles with her family tragedy and resulting rift in relations with her blood family but strengthening ties with her climbing family and the murder case she is working- seemingly a locked room mystery.
The two tales interweave neatly with the discovery of an access point through the balcony doors, high up a building and the resulting investigation impinges on both of Jacks worlds.
Jack is a strong character with a great backstory and the details about her climbing gave interest to the character without confounding the reader with too much niche technical information!

Silent Fall is the first book in the Detective Jack Kent series by Nicky Downes and I am hooked!
I absolutely loved the characters and found the storyline to be original! I can't wait to read the next book!
I definitely recommend reading this book!!!

Detective Jack Kent & her team are just about finished with a tricky rape case where the accused is the son of a prominent politician when she gets handed a burglary case- something she thought of as a demotion. However it seems that she has been assigned to this because of her reputation as a celebrated climber. The only way the thief could have got in was from the balcony- even if it was many floors up! When a rich doctor's body is found after a robbery & a carabiner is found clipped to the balcony rail Jack believes someone is playing with them. Especially as the ill gotten gains seem to be ending up with worthy causes.
Jack is a complex character. She is still mourning & racked with guilt after the death of her lover & climbing partner,( she still believes she should have been able to save her!) She does not get on with her family & still misses her climbing mad father. But she still manages to deal with her team with sympathy & consideration. She is a character I really warmed to & look forward to meeting her again. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book. I hope the next one comes along soon!
Detective Jack Kent is on her first murder investigation - that of a doctor found in her apartment with no signs of forced entry.
Jack also has demons of her own - the death of her father and her friend, both whilst climbing - a sport Jack loves.
This case combines her work with her hobby - but is it a climber who is responsible for the murder?
Well written and easy to read - will look out for others by Nicky Downes.
Thanks to @netgalley for the advance copy.
This is a new police procedural series based in Birmingham. It was an okay read but it didn’t wow me. I really struggled with Jack. I love a badass bisexual female detective but she fell a bit flat for me. There was a lot of talking about climbing which didn’t hold my interest and I don’t think we needed that many scenes of Jack climbing. The killers identity did keep me guessing though. I would probably read a second book in the series to see if Jack is fleshed out more.
✨ My Thoughts✨
Jack has just finished up a rape case after some push back from her boss, she’s still dealing with trauma that shes keeping to herself never letting it get in the way of being a great Detective, they out of the blue she gets her very first Murder Case.
Oh and Jack is also a World Class Mountaineer.
This is an amazing series starter, we got little bits of Jacks childhood and the last few years and about her family etc which I loved and definitely want to hear more about.
The case was really intriguing but I’ll be honest and say that I almost lost interest a quarter of the way through but then wow it really kicked up a notch and the story really came together and then I was hooked!
I really can’t wait to read more of this series, it had so many other great characters I’d love to hear more about too.
Detective Jack never work a murder case before but she is now when her boss assigned her and her team to investigate how a women was murder when there no signs of force entry and she lives in high rise. While investigating she realizes the killer maybe a professional climber because it’s the only way someone could get into a place without being disturb. Jack is also dealing with still mourning her best friend who she was in love with she feels as though her father accident that there more to it while dealing with that she also helping one of her team member with being blackmail because of something that happened to her when she was young that could disgrace her family all the while trying to find a killer who maybe trying to get her attention.
I received an ARC copy of this book from the Publisher via Netgalley and voluntarily leaving my review.
Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing fir my copy of Silent Fall by Nicky Downes
Detective Jacqueline “Jack” Kent is investigating a mysterious death, a wealthy woman is dead inside a high rise flat with all the doors locked from the inside.
How did the killer get in and why?
It’s a good story with an interesting police team.
Looking forward to the next in the series.
