Loved Rachel's last book, Hello Stranger, so I was excited to read this one.
Obviously there's a comparison with One Day but putting that to one side, I really enjoyed this story. It has its highs and lows and a dash of humour thrown in.
Rachel is excellent at creating authentic, relatable characters and she does it again here with Luke & Laura
All in all, It's an easy and enjoyable read - a perfect book to cosy up with.
Thank you to Penguin Random House & Netgalley for the chance to read an early copy
Just adored this story So heart-warming… I loved… Hit all the feels and had me laughing out loud… Will propel you to your happy place. A must read!…
A wonderful romantic Christmas story full of compassion. The story is set around the same date each year 16th December encompassing a rollercoaster of emotions from the two main characters as we discover what has happened to each of them through the year. Lots of ups and downs for them both as they travel along life’s path.
Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Each year from 2004 on December 16th, we visit Luke and Laura and learn what
has happened to them during the past twelve months.
It was very easy to become involved in their lives and to understand their
Highs and lows. Mistakes are made and words misunderstood. Regrets
Are many but having a chapter from both Luke and Laura each year it is easy to
See events from both sides.
Rachel Marks keeps the interest and tension going throughout the novel. And to
Say more could spoil the plot. Luckily I read this whilst on holiday so I could read
All day!
A brilliant book with lots of minor characters
This is such a lovely story, emotional and honest with such a heartwarming romance. Yet it's so much more. One December Day depicts parenthood and marriage perfectly. I loved the characters and how relatable it is. It has such a warmth to the writing style. It makes such a refreshing change to read something where it's not all perfect. Laura and Luke go through some things yet remain true to themselves, and you can't help but champion their love story. I was worried about reading a festive read in September, but it gave me that warm, cosy vibe I was looking for.
It's published on the 12th of October and is definitely highly recommended by me
I expected this to be a Christmas read and while it has elements of Christmas, I really enjoyed the story and following the characters.
Love the concept of telling the story on the same date in December every year! It made it interesting and made me want to read on to find out what happens next.
I love all the characters especially Sarah. Her storyline really sat with me.
Great book to read on a cosy winter day!
An utterly delightful gentle romance spanning the years between 2004 and 2017 always on 16th December. Heartwarming but also an emotional roller coaster with so many ups and downs of the relationship between Laura and Luke. The events of each 16th December is told from both of their viewpoints as they struggle to come to terms with early parenthood, illness and separation amongst other things. Wonderful characters with a touch of humour in the mix as it's a will they or won't they throughout the book. A charming and beautifully joyous book.
What a fabulous romantic festive read, one to curl up with as the nights draw in and dream of Christmas to come. Beautifully paced, taking the same day in December each year to move things forward, I loved seeing Laura’s and Luke’s journeys through life, both towards and away from each other. Never shying away from dealing with some tough issues, yet never losing its warmth and heart, I’m sure I’ll not be alone in reading this into the small hours waiting to see what happens next year.
I have read all of Rachel Marks books, and this one did not disappoint. As always, she is a very skilful at creating very credible characters, warts and all. The story follows a very unusual timeline, spanning a lot of years, as Luke and Laura celebrate the birthday of their son Dylan In December.
I did find I was slightly frustrated by this writing style, as I really wanted to know more detail of what happened in the aftermath of each birthday and the events which occurred. Each day in December seemed to end with a question of some sort.
Sometimes I wanted to slap Luke, other times I wanted to shake Laura, or simply bang their heads together. I did enjoy the story, despite it being so drawn out. It is beautifully written too, as all her books are.
I look forward to the next one.
My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for my advance copy of this book. Recommended.
This was a great book. I loved the format of each chapter being set on the same day in December, on and around Dylan’s birthday as their lives changed and evolved each year. The writing was amazing- it had me crying, laughing out loud and genuinely invested in the characters lives. I think Sarah was probably my favourite character and I was longing for her to be ok.
As for Laura and Luke- an amazing love story and yet you feel like knocking their heads together for most of the book! What a waste of their life and their love!!! So yes, as you can tell I got very emotionally invested and the pages just flew by. Thank you!
I absolutely love how this book is written. I have cried and laughed while reading it. Luke and Laura's characters are written so well.
I feel after reading this that I related to some of the twists and turns. I would highly recommend this book.
I really enjoyed this warm, gentle story of love, family and getting the timing right. The characters were likeable and I enjoyed the concept of catching up with them on the same day over 13 years.
I absolutely adored this cosy, Christmassy read. We follow Laura and Luke on the 16 December over a number of years and we learn about them, their relationship and what happens to them over the years. I really liked the concept, following them on the one day is simple and powerful and reminiscent of the gorgeous 'One Day'. Add in the Christmas element as well and you are in for one romantic, beautiful read. I just adored this. The storytelling was effective, the setting magical and the characters are all gorgeous and I felt for all of them and the various emotions Marks' puts them through. I highly recommend curling up with this book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Michael Joseph for an advance copy.
Laura and Luke meet on a day in December which is then cleverly told to us in a story on that one day every year from 2004 to 2019. Told around that festive period it’s a well written book which is no surprise after the author’s previous hits. Refreshingly told by both main characters, this story has it all; love, heart-break, humour and fun.
I’ve been a fan of Rachel Marks since reading the amazing ‘Saturdays at Noon’ and this new book is in keeping with characters that really do seem real within a story that takes you through the whole range of emotions, thoughtfully written and believable.
I enjoyed the way you got both perspectives of Laura and Luke through the book with a perfect balance of tears and laughter in a novel which I’m sure would be the perfect winter read snuggled up in the warm with a nice hot drink. Highly recommended.
Many thanks to NetGalley for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.
I don't know if there are words to describe how much I adored this book - it made me laugh, it made me cry and I loved it all. Our main characters are Laura and Luke, they meet on a December day and the book is then their story on that date, every year. It is so very well written and I loved how we got Laura and Luke's storylines as opposed to one main character. I enjoy how it's not a straight forward love story and very realistic, Simply one of the best pieces of fiction that I have read this year, so authentic, heart-breaking and humorous in all the right amounts - 5 stars all round.
This was a very clever story . Set on the same day over 13 years. All set around Christmas . I did not warm to the main female character at first Laura but she grew on me. I liked Luke . He made me realise fame is not everything . Sarah was an amazing best friend. There were some very tearful moments.. Dylan was a lovely child. Wise. I loved the days out like ballooning and jumping into deep water.. You have to read it. One for my book club and a perfect ending.
A Christmassy take on a similar theme to David Nicholls' One Day. We follow Luke and Laura over fifteen 16 Decembers from 2005 to 2019 (dodging the pandemic), from the early days of their relationship , unexpected parenthood, Luke's rise to success with his band, and everything that comes after. It's a gentle tale though with an edge to it at times, and a very engaging read. I enjoyed the dialogue and the snark between Luke and Laura and the "this day, every year" structure is a winning formula.
I'm not sure if this is my favourite of Rachel Marks' books, but it was a very enjoyable read.
Thanks for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy.
A lovely Christmas read. I loved reading this story & will recommend it to others. Thanks for the opportunity to read & review it.
Such a wonderful book, I loved the plot, and oh my god the characters were so amazing!! I definitely will be recommending it!!
I don't normally read Christmas themed books as I find them too schmaltzy, however the cover and blurb of this one drew me in. I am happy to report it was a utter delight; festive and funny, tender and humerous. A really great read for a cold winter's day with a hot chocolate. Love the cover art work too.
