This wasn't right for me.
The first story I could only understand a few words because of the heavy Scottish accent.
In the end it was told that some "stories" where extracts from complete books, which might be the reason they didn't feel complete to me.
I struggled to enjoy most of the stories on here, despite the promising authors who were featured. Perhaps on a reread, that could change.
I was a little put off by this audiobook as the first story in a quite diverse collection was very difficult to understand because of the strong Scottish accent of the narrator and what I did understand was not really to my taste. Other stories, while it was easier to understand the narration, I often felt that I was missing something. I felt that the authors were probably aiming for an audience closer to their age than mine. I admit I did not listen to all the stories all the way through.
The narration was on the whole quite good but possibly a little inexperienced at times. This is a collection that I think would be better read than listened to as I could then put my own interpretation on the story telling and get a better sense of the authors’ intent particularly as the styles of writing and narration are so varied.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy.
This is a genuinely impressive collection. I will definitely be looking up some of these authors and looking out for them in bookshops!
I love what I call anthology audio - audiobooks with multiple narrators. It works really well for multi perspective novels, where each chapter is told by a specific character. It also works really well in how Bolinda Audio has used it here, for narrating the latest Best of Young British Novelists. Each narrator lends their voice to a piece, and of course I had my favourites: Thomas Morris’s Wales was top - Welshness is still so under-represented in ‘Best of’ lists like these, so more power to him - closely followed by A Dying Tongue, Theories of Care, and Universality. But they all were compelling listening, one way or another, and all ones to watch!
Great mixture of all types of short stories from some of the most talented writers about. Some ones to watch out for sure and some welcomed treats from some of my favourite writers, Grahame Armstrong with extra bonus of him narrating. Some narrators better than others but all have a good tone and tell the stories well. All the stories are relevant for today with strong themes we will all have opinions on. Great selection. Passed a long boring Sunday cleaning whist listening. Thank you for the ARC
