I found I was holding my breath throughout this book and I have never felt so much suspense in a book! It's story is of strength and fighting adversity! So many hardships in the toughest of times. I really liked Sophie and Adele not so much. The girls are strong minded individuals who I have great respect for.
I cannot give a review for this book, because it was taken from my Kindle before I could read it. Thank you
WW2 The French Resistance with Many Twists Turns and Heartache
This is a beautifully written book by Rachel Wesson. This book is a completely gripping book on WW2 and the French Resistance. It is a novel about twin sisters Adèle Bélanger who is determined to indulge in the pleasures of Parisian society with her father when the Germans arrive and invade France. Her twin sister Sophie is a third-year medical student who works tirelessly at the hospital trying to save lives and help wherever she can. There younger brother becomes involved in the resistance and the sisters’ lives are changed forever when he is arrested, and a family secret is divulged that heightens the storyline conflict.
The book displays how reality is often vastly different from expectations and how people's differences can drive families, friends, and neighbours apart. I just loved reading this book and it shows how the decisions and actions of a single person can affect so many. The storyline is great as you get so involved with the different characters. An exceptionally relevant story about the French people and how the Germans treated the French Jews during the Second World War.
The book has so many twists turns and heartache but once you start reading this book you will find you cannot put it down and the end leaves you wanting more. A delightful book with strong characters and I look forward to reading the second book in this series. Thanks to NetGalley and to the publishers of this book for giving me a free advance copy of the book to preview and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I think this is one of the best books I have read in fiction about the bravery of normal people during the occupation of France during World War Two because it does not glamourise the events that normal people had to endure.
It surrounds twin sisters Sophie and Adele who although brought up in a well to do family could not be more different. Sophie is training to be a doctor Adele although recently widowed enjoys the high life of Parisian society but all of this will change when Hitlers army marches into Paris.
This is one of two books and my only criticism is that this book end on a cliff hanger but don’t worry the second book in the series Light Rises is available now.
Both books do not glamourise the horror that Jewish people went through and the actions of the ordinary people who worked in the resistance and at times the read is very harrowing
.cannot recommend it enough
You’ll love this book! Twins who are so different…doing everything to help who they can! Rachel Wesson is great at telling a story…I can’t wait to read the next book!
I forgot this was a series! Now I can't wait to read the next one. These WWII books are hard to read but the resilience of the people is so heroic. I particularly enjoyed the characters of Jules, Dr. Murphy, and Sophie. The author gives a startling look into this difficult time period without being gory.
Thanks so much to netgalley and the publisher for the arc. The opinions are my own.
Wow! This book has taken me some time to read but I finally finished it. It is a very long book but it is a good book.
A very intriguing book of twins Sophie and Adele Belanger during WW2, Germany invades Paris and so this is there story. The story of family, courage, love and even heartbreak. This book will make you cry, it is intense and grabs you and your attention.
I think the reason it did take me a while to read it is that it is so full on and I didn't want to miss anything. I really enjoyed reading it as it is a book that makes you think and gets the emotions running wild. So well written and I look forward to reading the next book (just hope it isn't quite so long!). 4 1/2 stars from me.
Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Two sisters, WW2, French resistance, a bit of a chiller story but one that is crying out to be read. Strong characters and great plot. Highly recommend this 5stars.
Thanks to NetGalley and publisher for this ARC
An interesting story of two sisters at the invasion of France by the Nazis. One sister continues to fight to save lives as a student doctor and the other one becomes involved in saving Jewish children from the Holocaust.
An unexpected beginning had me crying in the first few chapters, it was the start of this gripping novel that drew me in, I was unable to put it down. Darkness Falls the first book of the, The Resistance Sisters is a well written book following twins Sophie and Adele Belanger during WW2 as the Germans march into Paris. The twins maybe identical but are so different in personalities. Sophie a strong, caring, independent women involved with helping the resistance after losing her beau and brother. Adele is a naïve, selfish child enjoying the presents of nazis until losing her friend and brother who are killed by them, does something that at the beginning of the book you would have never have guessed. A story of love, courage and loss. I’m really looking forward to continuing the twin’s story in Light Rises.

Wow - what an amazing story of the French Resistance! An insightful look at life in Paris as the German occupation began & tightened their grip. This is part one of a two part series - a heartbreaking story of families torn apart, strength, courage, survival, and a great example of how fear can change a person into someone else entirely. The characters are well developed, and I was drawn into their story from page one. I read this book at every possible moment, finished it in two days and immediately pre-ordered part 2, Light Rises, to be published August 21st , 2023. I highly recommend this series!
Thank you to Netgalley, the publisher, and author for an advanced copy to review.
Fascinating read, but horrible times! What a family! And so true to what happened. Sophie is a doctor with the American Hospital and is learning no much more than medicine. Her twin sister, Adele, is a socialite whose world is turned sideways when the war slams into Paris and her father welcomes the Nazis as great business partners. Her brother works for the local museum but seems to be gone during more than what seems business hours and also spends more time with the maid than us seemly. And the mother, who is German by birth, does not want to admit that her fatherland is capable of what the rumors are saying. Will the family survive the war? What roles will they play? Quite an interesting turn of events takes place to keep the reader engaged! Looking forward to the sequel!
Powerful and exciting best describes the storyline and characters. Loved it!
Twin sisters Sophie and Adele, alike in looks while completely different in character. Or are they!
As the Germans take over their beloved Paris, not only does it alter their way of living it changes their lives for ever. The obstacles that are put in their way, sometimes by their own families. Others by secrets that have been buried for so long creep out the woodwork and cause untold damage.
To say I was on the edge of my seat at times is no understatement. My favourite character was Sophie, mainly because she never strays from her principles. The usual villains may surprise.
Then the delight when reaching the end, I discovered there is a follow up .
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I greatly enjoyed Darkness Falls. Normally, books with multiple points of view confuse me due to cognitive issues, but Rachel Wesson created 2 unique personalities from the same family who are facing two different aspects of the same war. It is very easy to follow and a treat to read, cannot wait for book #2.
Darkness Falls by Rachel Wesson is a very realistic story of the invasion of Paris during WWII. Each member of a family takes a different path - some a path of resistance, some a path of collaboration with the enemy, and some just try to live in the past. Twin sisters, who are so different in their outlooks on life, must discover what path each must take. Read to find out what path Sophie and Adele choose.
A copy was provided for my review, but all opinions are my own.
Thank you for allowing me to review this book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and need to read the next book to find out what happens to Sophie and Adele. The ending disappointed me as I was expecting the story to continue in this book.
A great example of historical fiction that explores the experiences and prejudices of the French people during the German occupation of Paris. Within the Family Bèlanger we get a feeling of torn loyalties, control, fears and beliefs. The main characters are twins Sophie and Adele. Sophie is a hard working trainee Doctor whilst her sister comes across as a spoilt young lady. The family also includes a younger brother and their parents. Each experiences life in difficult times differently. Loyalties are strained, friendships are valued, but who can be trusted?
The author has written well and has carried out her research in detail. Although a work of fiction, the events are as experienced by many, some characters are based on real people. I can highly recommend this book and I look forward to reading the next one.
i just love rachel wessons well researched books. it is more to the point than others, maybe even a little bit more raw. but i really loved this book. you will fall in love with the twins, identical but oh so different from each other. one is strong and the other one is more like a brat. But they both develop through the book. it is a light in the end of the tunell book, even though the road to getting there is hard.
thank you to netgalley for letting me read this e arc in exchange for an honest opinion
This was such a gripping read - I was enthralled throughout and can’t wait to read the sequel. Adele and Sophie are very different but both captivating protagonists, and the story of occupied France was beautifully written and very well paced. I’m grateful to the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this one via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.
I was totally immersed in this very powerful and moving book, from the first to the last page. It tells the story of the occupation of Paris in World War II, and watching the story unfurl, and seeing how everything changed so quickly for the citizens is horrifying. The Belanger family, consisting of Papa, Maman, twins Adele and Sophie, and Jean-Pierre are hugely impacted by the events unfolding around them. Sophie is almost a qualified doctor who works tirelessly, Adele is a spoiled, shallow society beauty, and Jean-Pierre works at the museum. Papa is a businessman with a finger in lots of pies, and is a very forceful and brash character. For me, watching the community turn on each other, the distrust, the suspicion and the denial of what was happening as the Nazis invaded every part of their lives was horrible to see. The collaborators ensured that they had everything they needed, not caring about their compatriots. Ultimately, loyalties are tested, decisions have to be made, and danger is everywhere. The story is very well written, and kept my interest throughout. The brutality and cruelty is strongly portrayed, and I was left with an overwhelming feeling of sadness, and also admiration for the Resistance movement.
An engaging historical fiction set in France during WWII. I enjoyed the plot and the story was well paced. The characters are likable and interesting. Highly recommended.
