Let’s start off with the fact I couldn’t help, but want to read this because of the title, number one it’s one of my favourite Christmas songs, number two New York is one of my favourite places, number three Christmas is my favourite time of year, add then the fact it’s Romance, every bell was ringing out (in a Carol of the Bells kind of way) to tell me that this was my perfect seasonal, romantic read. I mean if I didn’t like this, there is no hope for any of my Christmas reading this year, I’m really happy to say that I loved it, the only real issue I had with it is that it made me wistful and if money wasn’t an issue, I’d be hopping on a plane ASAP.
This isn’t my first read by Zoë Folbigg and if she keeps writing books like this, then I can tell you, I’m never going to reach my last as long as Zoe keeps writing. I loved Charlie, you know you connect with a character when your heart aches for her, you laugh with them , want to scream at them too and Pete, well he was adorable and I loved him so much. I loved the tour of New York he too Charlie on and pulling her into his friends and family, I loved him so much and the way their romance grows over the story.
If like me you love all of the above, romance, Christmas, New York then this book is for you, if you’re not keen on Christmas still grab a copy as it’s not it’s major theme and isn’t all that Christmassy or overly saccharine, basically read this book, why would you not want to !
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Christmastime in New York is magical. I was looking forward to reading about Charlie's adventures in the city over the holidays. Unfortunately, Charlie's boyfriend is a total douche and is a no show when she arrives in the US to visit him. I despised his character, and we didn't even officially meet him until close to the end of the book. Charlie is a strong willed character who deserved much better than someone who ghosted her after 16 years together. Good riddance.
I loved the way Pete and Charlie met and how Charlie fit seamlessly into Pete's life, with his friends and even his family. While I didn't fully feel the chemistry between them, I was happy Charlie managed to salvage her trip to NYC. I loved her job and her friendships, especially with Jazz. Bring on more makeup tips and fun loving friends! Overall, a cute story, but not so much a Christmas themed romance.
I absolutely adored this book. From the beginning to the end I felt as if I was in each page, I loved it. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Huge 5 stars from me.
This story enchanted me from the beginning with its likeable protagonists, believable friendships and sense of mystery. Charlie is a successful woman in a committed relationship with Harry; Charlie has high hopes for her festive trip to New York. Nothing goes to plan. A chance meeting with Pete, a kind man she connects with, is the only good thing that happens to her. Especially when she realises Harry is not the man she thought he was. Days later, another chance meeting with Pete sets her on a different life path full of emotion, friendship, laughs and romance.
I like the evocative New York festive setting, the magical ethos, the character development and the romance.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher.
Zoe Folbigg - Fairytale Of New York.
First things first. Did anyone else start singing the song? Quite possibly the best Christmas song ever written.
I digress. Back to the book.
Well quite honestly it’s blooming fabulous!
It’s a book where Christmas is a part of the story, rather than the story being about Christmas. I love books like this. They ease us very gently into the full on, hardcore, festive reads.
Charlie Brown is our heroine, and I liked her from the get-go.
She is a very successful and in demand make-up artist. She has some incredible friends and a seemingly happy relationship.
Her trip to New York doesn’t go to plan. But it does bring someone new into her orbit.
Pete is the sexy intellectual type.
He’s a man who pretty much seems to have his life together, despite an ex who treated him pretty badly.
I love that Zoe Forbigg wrote in a character who was a real cow. One of my pet hates is people who preach about being kind and about women supporting women. Then they proceed to treat people appallingly.
It’s always good to see these people be called out on their behaviour.
Any way… so far I’ve shared my favourite Christmas song and told you about the type of person who gives me the ick (as the young people would say.) I should tell you a bit more about the book itself.
#FairytaleOfNewYork is a modern day classic.
It’s funny and sweet. Sweepingly romantic, emotional, atmospheric and utterly heart warming.
There is an element of the mysterious in this story. It’s not a massive part of the book, but quite touching in it’s own way.
#FairytaleOfNewYork put me very much in mind of a Bridget Jones type of story. How much more warm hearted and uplifting can you get!
With the mention of some cracking songs, this book also creates it’s own beautiful soundtrack.
I could easily see this book being made into a tv series, just like Beth O’Leary’s The Flat Share, or even a film. It would be a perfect snuggle in, feel good watch.
#FairytaleOfNewYork is beautifully written. Zoe Forbigg has created something quite special.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
With thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources, Boldwood Books and Netgalley for a digital arc of this title.
This was such a gorgeous book and the setting was just a dream. I have read a few books by Zoe and this one didn't disappoint. The characters are so well written and easy to relate to. I love that this story was a mix of romance and wonderful Christmas spirit. If you are looking for pure winter escapism then you need to read this.
Absolutely loved this one - first book by this author and will definitely be searching out her others. Read it in just over a day, which shows how good it was. Always love a NYC setting and this was the perfect read. Loved the main characters and disliked the ones we were supposed to -haha.
Don't wait for Christmas - read it NOW
Charlie had a terrible start to her dream holiday. She was supposed to finish her stint on a TV set, fly to New York to meet with her boyfriend Harry, and have a fabulous 3 months in New York. Charlie really needed this break. She needed to see Harry. It had been 6 months since Harry left for New York. But when Harry doesn't show up at JFK airport and doesn't answer his phone, Charlie needs to decide if she stays in New York or heads home.
Pete is on his way to the last of his classes for the year at Colombia when he shares an Uber with a very sad English girl. When he meets her again the following day, it's fate, and he asks her to come along for the day. This turns into a week of tourist things and an invite to Pete's family home in the Hudson Valley.
This is a wonderful love letter to the less obvious tourist parts of New York, and a little of London. Charlie is a wonderful strong character and I loved how the author slowly revealed all her issues to us. Pete is a lovely, authentically Greek heritage character and the author included some beautiful references that spoke to this. I was a little disappointed with the closed door scenes as I feel they could have been used to show further character vulnerability. If you want to go to New York, have been to New York, or miss New York this romance is for you. Equal parts romance and travel.
Big thanks to NetGalley, Boldwood Books and Zoe Folbigg for this early release copy.
I'm so Christmas ready right now and I'm loving all the new festive fiction releases.
Fairytale of New York is the third book I've read by Folbigg and I absolutely loved it, yet I still haven't read The Note!
Can you imagine flying across to the States to meet your partner, only to find you've been ghosted? What would you do? I'd be the one who forgets him, Harry who, and would turn it into my first adventure as a single woman!
The characters were all likable, the story is wonderfully heartwarming and NYC is the perfect romantic setting, it's a huge dream of mine to spend Christmas there.
My first book by this Author. I found this story intriguing right from the very beginning. Charlie was in a difficult relationship. She went to spend a Christmas reunion in New York with her boyfriend but things did not go as planned. There are a few twists and different angles to this story and it’s characters. I found this a good read.
Apart from the prologue it was a reasonable story. It just didn't match up so if reading this miss the prologue out and you will enjoy this book. 4 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley and publisher for this ARC
Charlie meets Pete after losing her boyfriend Harry in New York when she arrives by plane, but finds there's no one there to meet her. Pete offers to help find out why she couldn't find her boyfriend. There are comedy moments throughout the story which made me laugh out loud, sad moments too. But all in all this is a well written story full of substance and very absorbing!!!.
I received this free arc book for an honest review.
#Netgalley, #bookandtonic, #zoefolbigg.
This was a very cute romcom that was easy to read. Charlie and Pete’s romance was believable and sweet. Very fun to read about Pete’s family and extended family and friends. Jane Street is a lovely area to write about.
One minor hiccup is that the main character cites Trading Places and the Sopranos as a NYC film and tv series but Trading Places takes place primarily in Philadelphia with a small scene in NYC and the Sopranos is pretty much a love letter to New Jersey.
Fairytale of New York by Zoe Folbigg, a NetGalley review. Charlie Brown gets majorly stood up by her boyfriend Harry when she goes to visit him in New York. However a chance meeting with a stranger in an Uber changes everything. From the first page this book felt right and the words flowed, it immediately felt like a book that you could escape into, a story although fictional felt like it was always meant to be told. The author @zoefolbigg is a new author to me, I was drawn to the cover and the title. It’s a funny thing to perhaps say about a book but reading this I felt calm and relaxed yet completely invested in every aspect of the story. The big felt like a big wintery hug and if I could have closed the door, made a hot chocolate and cuddled into the duvet to read this in one sitting I would have! Charlie Brown the main character is talented, trusting, naive at times, strong willed and determined, incredibly brave, loving and warm hearted. When you choose this book you know what your getting, it is predictable but there are twists and turns along the way that will have you shouting at the book and it’s character. This without a doubt would be a great film, everything about this book jumps of the pages and feels three dimensional , the authors writing ignites the readers imagination, well this was the case for me. New York will always hold a special place in my heart and the author explains it so well its like walking the pavements along with the characters. As I read this I had to keep reminding my self I wasn’t watching a film, as I could hear myself in my head shouting at the characters, especially towards the end, when characters arrived that weren’t welcome. I still can’t believe how emotionally invested I got with this book, I advise a box of tissues close to hand! I will be recommending this book without a doubt and hope whoever does read it enjoys it as much as I did. It’s up there as one of my favourite reads this year, such an easy and enjoyable read. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thirty-two-year-old Charlie Brown has a plane to catch.
As Christmas approaches, she is in New York bound, to be reunited with her boyfriend Harry after work has kept them apart.
But once she lands, Harry is nowhere to be found…
There’s no hand-drawn sign with her name being brandished at the gate. No answer from Harry's phone. And all at once, Charlie’s worst fears come true.
What has happened to Harry? And what should Charlie do now that she’s an ocean away from home?
As Charlie slowly comes to terms with her predicament, she makes a decision. She’s not leaving New York without finding out the truth, and with a little help from her handsome new friend Pete, there might still be a path to happily-ever-after…
Full of suspense, love, and friendship, a book to sit down and forget the world around you.
Not quite as Christmassy as I expected but it was brilliant none the less!
The setting in New York was great, and the difficult situation that Charlie found herself in was intriguing. And it was great to see her connect with the locals and pull out a positive side to her visit.
Pete was fantastic and I loved their friendship, and the way he introduced Charlie to the sights of New York, sharing his friends and family time with her.
I loved Charlie’s job too, and the TV shows that she worked on as a make up artist, and the clash she has with one of her colleagues.
A really sweet romance grows gradually through the story and it was a gorgeous ending too.
Not what I expected but I enjoyed it very much indeed!
Charlie heads to New York to spend the holidays with her boyfriend Harry. She arrives to only find out no Harry. What’s a girl to do? This was a quick book. It’s a perfect beach read. Thanks to Rachel’s Random Resources for the early copy
2/5 stars! I was just not impressed. This was bland as all get out and the cover was the most interesting thing about it. There was far too much confusion in the timing of the story and I didn't connect with the characters.
I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review
I have read previous books by this author and enjoyed them, but this book wasn't for me, I just didn't enjoy it.
I found I wasn't rooting for Charlie as I didn't understand/make sense of her actions regarding Harry. It also felt a bit long winded. Also I didn't get the warm fuzzy festive vibes I expect from a Christmas romance.
Thanks to netgalley and the publishers for this advance read.

My Opinion
Charlie flies out to spend Christmas in New York with her boyfriend - whilst set at Christmas this book isn't overly festive. Instead of spending the holidays as she expected, Charlie found herself in a very unexpected situation. Overall this was a sweet romance, but definitely not what I expected.
