Unfortunately I have not been able to connect with this book and after multiple attempts have had to admit defeat and mark as dnf.
Thank you Storm Publishing and Netgalley and sorry for taking so long to read, but started on Saturday and finished on Sunday - this is definitely unputdownable (is that a word?!)
This had me on the edge of my seat so much I had to finish it to read what was coming next.
I totally recommend this book for anybody looking for a really good thriller.
5 out of 5 ⭐without a doubt
This was a very gripping , exciting read full out twists and turns all the was along so much so I became quite confused as to who was who and to what was actually happening. Drew, Joe, Jaime ,Melanie , Phoebe… are all these people who they say they are? Are they to be trusted?
A very thrilling read and difficult to put down!
Many thanks to Netgalley and publisher forgiving me the chance to read this book.
Wow what a great read!! I had a hard time putting this book down, I read it in one sitting it was that good!!!
From the outside, her life appears normal, boring even – but in that way you treasure when you once had nothing. These days, she has a loving new husband, a polite and intelligent teenage son. Everything seems perfect, but beneath the surface, but she’s scared.
A really interesting unpacking of a family with more complex layers than ever. Joe has changed and it’s having an impact on all the family.
It was interesting, however I found it difficult to keep up at times. There was a lot of plot lines, and lies and deception that I felt confused a lot of the time. This may have been what the author was going for - so that you were feeling how the main character was feeling. However, it just made me feel less invested in the story line.
This wasn’t a bad book at all. It was a Netgalley find sitting on my TBR for a while and, when the time came to start reading it, I wondered why I picked it at all (the first-person narrated blurbs just don’t do it for me anymore). But, once I got stuck in, I got stuck in.
The Son started off a bit slow but soon picked up its pace. It had the usual twists and turns you would expect from a good psychological thriller. What made it even better was the characters. Drew and Joe were just unlikeable, but in a way that makes the book better. There were some awful side characters as well and that just added to the fact that you just don’t know who to trust.
Beth, the character you were probably supposed to actually like, was just about tolerable. I can’t put my finger on why exactly I didn’t take to her but there was just something that didn’t sit right with me.
Finally, I didn’t guess the ending and that’s always a winning point for me.
A very good read- I wasn’t sure which way this story would go but it was worth the surprise! There was so many twists and turns which wrapped up really nicely towards the end. Well worth a read!
This book was so good! Had me on the edge of my seat. This book had so many twists interns that you had no idea what was coming next. Thank you to net galley and the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title. This is my first title by this author and I will for sure be reading more from her in the future. I will recommend this book to anybody looking for a twisty turny thriller that has you on the edge of your seat. 5 out of 5 stars
The First half was slow but I enjoyed the second half. A few turns. Great concept. The main character was too whiny for my taste.
A great premise and some good twists.
Beth works for the Samaritans in a local prison, a role she was drawn to after her ex took his own life. When she receives a telephone call telling her not to trust “him”, she doesn’t know who to be wary of, her police officer husband, Drew, or her teenage son, Joe.
The first half was too slow but then the pace picks up and the second half was super twisty!
A found Beth a bit whiny and irritating and I did predict one of the big twists, but still an enjoyable read.
3 ⭐️ Thanks to Netgalley, Elena Wilkes and Storm for an ARC in return for an honest review.
Honestly I really struggled to get into this book. I couldn't bring myself to like any of the characters, and not getting a read on Joe just frustrated the hell out of me. I wasn't intrigued, I wasn't curious, I was just annoyed with how much I disliked these characters. None of their behaviour make any sense, and the more the book went on, the more annoyed I got. Beth got told not to trust anyone, and she continued to trust everyone?! And Joe's actions were all over the place...
And Drew?!? The book ended, and I still wasn't sure whose side he was on.....
The ending was unsatisfying, nothing was explained really.
I just wish I had added this one to my DNF list. 🙈
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
A dark and atmospheric read that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final page. This domestic thriller is not to be missed
If you want to read a book that you can't put down, pick up this one. It will keep you hooked from the very first page. Full of twists and turns.
"The Son" by Elena Wilkes is a three-star read that offers a solid yet somewhat predictable entry into the domestic thriller genre. While the premise is intriguing—a mother's desperate search for her missing son—the execution lacks the depth and originality needed to truly stand out.
Wilkes' writing style is engaging and easy to follow, making for a quick and enjoyable read. However, the plot unfolds in a fairly straightforward manner, with few surprises or twists to keep readers guessing.
The characters, while well-developed, often feel like familiar archetypes rather than fully fleshed-out individuals. As a result, it can be difficult to become emotionally invested in their struggles and triumphs.
Despite these shortcomings, "The Son" still offers moments of suspense and tension that will keep readers turning the pages. Wilkes effectively captures the frantic desperation of a mother searching for her child, tapping into universal fears and anxieties.
In conclusion, while "The Son" may not break new ground in the domestic thriller genre, it remains a solid and entertaining read for fans of the genre.
This book was so good. I read this in two days. This book hooked me from the start. Thank you to netgalley giving me this arc in exchange for an honest review.
This was a great psychological thriller. I was on the edge of my seat while reading it. Faced paced and very well written
This book was just to slow for me. I found it to be too predictable and that plays a huge part in my rating.
Interesting story line about twisted lies and twisted minds.
How far would you go to protect your son? Would you cover for him if he’s involved in something that is your worst nightmare?
This story is about a mother who loves her son and wants to help him. But she realizes he is involved in something she just doesn’t understand. Something she cannot fathom.
A mother’s love they say knows no bounds……..but there comes a time when that love has to be shown as tough love and show your child they have to pay the consequences for their actions and you will be there with them as they do.
