I appreciate NetGalley giving me a copy of this book to read, I really struggled to get into this the first 100 pages it just dragged so much and found myself so annoyed at the main character and just saying how stupid are you! The big “surprise” was okay it may be for others but this wasn’t for me. I think a note should also be made this book is about “sex trafficking” and could be triggering for some individuals. This for me as a hard no I struggled even rating this a 1.
Really enjoyed this book and would love to read more from this author. Read this book all day today and although started off pretty slow it did pick up and I really enjoyed the storyline and the different characters. Didn’t end how I thought it would which I liked. Thank you for my ARC copy xxx
Holy smokes!!! Started off a bit slow for me but once you get into this book it moves so fast paced it has your head reeling!!!
Excellent twist that I didn't see coming.
So many well developed characters that are easy to follow their story.
Enjoyed this one for sure.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and NetGalley for an early release of this book.
This was a slow burner which took me a while to get into but wow when it got going it was absolutely fantastic. It had me guessing to the end going back and forth on who to trust. It had a bit of everything it was Intense, suspenseful, and very intriguing. I will definitely be recommending this to anyone who loves a gripping thriller. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for a honest review.
The Son starts off a little slow, but definitely picks up as the book goes on. I wasn't sure who to trust or believe. It seemed everyone's intentions were off. I couldn't tell who was a good guy and who was a bad guy. The latter half of the book becomes very suspenseful and full of twists and turns. The ending wraps up all loose ends which left me satisfied. A solid 4 star read!
Thanks to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I haven't read anything by Elena Wilkes before and my first encounter with their books were good! The pacing is good, the characters felt well-rounded and the overall story was gripping! I will be reading more from this author for sure!
This was my first book by this author and a fast past read which makes you question if you really know anyone as well as you think you do.
This was a gripping read that kept you guessing until the end and captured the interests of
The reader.
Beth, a Samaritan worker, and Drew, a policeman, are newly married and still in the honeymoon phase. The only fly in the ointment is Beth’s son, 17 year old Joe. His attitude towards his mother is brusque and offhand, he is no longer the boy who idolised his mother. Secretive and always on his phone, Joe is withdrawing from family life. Knowing this is all part of growing up, Beth is assured by Drew that he will look out for Joe. The growing relationship between the two is something that pleases Beth, but also makes her a little envious, remembering what she has lost. Little does she realise that neither Joe nor Drew are being entirely honest with her, both harbouring deeply disturbing secrets.
This is a dark book with both the subject matter and the events that unfurl shocking. The plot line is an interesting and compulsive read. Harrowing and menacing, with kidnap, coercion, brutality, gaslighting, trafficking, et al, this book has it all.
Beth is a woman who, on one hand, is a lioness, fighting for her cub, but also a total walkover, naive, with total oblivion to her “colleagues” and “clients” and their actions. The situations she gets into would possibly have resulted in her death, not a walk out of the door! A perfect target to be groomed, Beth is as susceptible as the young girls she is trying to save.
There are no great surprises in this story, all events are well signposted before they happen and the reader is always one step ahead. However it’s not a bad read, and does grab the attention.
One thing that needs to change is the ending of the last chapter. After all the awfulness, those last few sentences are unbelievably twee!!
Thank you NetGalley and Storm.
4.5 stars
Woah! This is one of the best thrillers I’ve read this year! Intense, suspenseful, intriguing. It did not go the way I was expecting which is great! I highly recommend and cannot wait for more from Wilkes!
This book went in a totally different direction from what I expected but I did really enjoy it and spent the whole of Sunday reading it.
Beth who has brought her teenage son up single handily has a new husband Drew who is in the police force. She helps out at the prison in a role with the samaratins trying to stop suicides. Is Drew the perfect husband that she first thought?
I would have given this five stars as it held my attention for the whole day but Beth to me was an annoying wet blanket and I would have liked to have given her a good shake.
Thank you Storm Publishing, NetGalley & Elena Wilkes for an advanced copy of this book.
An interesting book based on the authors eavesdropping on a conversation between a mother and her seventeen year old son. At times quite a harrowing tale but the fast paced climax expressed a lot of emotion and entertained this reviewer. Thanks to NetGalley and the wonderful Storm Publishing for the chance to ARC this book.
A very powerful psychological thriller.
It was written with an air of menace from the get-go which i found very difficult to put down.
Be prepared to be sucked right in.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
This was a good quick read with plenty of surprises and the ending was unexpected. The characters were great, the story was suspenseful and the style of writing was perfect. This is the first book I have read by this author and I will be keeping my eye out for more in the future. I would recommend this to anyone who likes reading psychological thrillers.
