Thanks to Berkley and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this!
I was excited to read this book because fake dating and sapphic witches! The premise was intriguing, but in my opinion the execution fell a bit short.
The main character, Morgan, had some traits that frustrated me. I wasn't fond of her lack of self-esteem, which didn't seem to improve throughout the book. It was difficult to connect with Rory as well, due to a lack of character development. I believe that this also contributed to their relationship feeling rushed. I didn't have a good understanding of the characters, and I felt that they didn't seem to know each other well. There was no build up to the sudden shift from friendship to lovers. However, I did appreciate how Morgan's protective nature towards Rory and the way Rory consistently encouraged Morgan in her career.
Whilst I loved the fake dating trope, I did not enjoy the miscommunication and felt that Morgan could've handled this better. The way she suddenly treated Morgan seemed out of character for her.
With more character development and a slower relationship build-up, this could've been a captivating read. Although it didn't fully meet my expectations, I appreciate having had the opportunity to read it.
I absolutely loved this story! The plot is so fun and unique and it was so easy to read! I love witches and I loved this author's take on witches and the unique world that was built. It was such an enjoyable read
I loved this! The miscommunication trop is one of my favorites when done in a way that feels natural, and I felt that this did it well. It was a little predictable, however, and if you’re looking for something *spicy* this isn’t the one for you. A cute, fun, witchy romance.
I couldn't get past the first chapter of this as the copy Netgalley sent me was constantly missing letters from words which made it unbearable to read.
The pacing was off with this one, the miscommunication trope is a no-no, and overall this wasn't enjoyable.
Sapphic, witches and fake dating there’s inspiration in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. This was a cute book and I absolutely loved it. I can’t wait to read more by this author.
I really liked both of these characters, but I was begging by the end for Morgan to grow up and actually TALK to Rory. She spends like half of this book avoiding Rory or ignoring her and it was so frustrating! I did really like the magic system, with magic being part of our world and a fun witchy festival taking place during the story, and the writing was also strong too - I would definitely read more from this author. However, I can't get past the fact that the plot of the book doesn't actually start until about a third of the way through, and the fact that the conclusions Morgan jumps to are just insane (i.e. that she needs to be mean to Rory to get her to hate her - this is the least crazy of the conclusions she comes to all by herself). I honestly kind of wanted Rory to dump Morgan anyway by the end, because why would you put up with being treated like that?? Especially when they had literally only been "together" for 2 weeks.
Unfortunately I wasn't a fan of the concept or the characters in this book. Having read the author's foreword I was optimistic that the material would be dealt with sensitively and that the story would be more than meets the eye, but it wasn't the case. I don't think I will ever be a fan of the love potion trope and the thin line between consent and whatever this is.
Thank you to Netgalley for providing me with a free electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Morgan is a self-confessed "Messy Witch." Working in her family business, crafting potions by day, and offering to fake date the woman of her dreams, the incredibly powerful Rory, by night.
As Morgan and Rory develop their ruse, a real chemistry seems to emerge, complicated by Morgan thinking she may have accidentally dosed Rory with a love potion, a forbidden magic...
It was a fun and intriguing story, not my usual fare, but I was drawn in by the idea of sapphic witches in New England. I liked this book, but I did feel it was maybe 100 pages too long, a little drawn out. I loved Rory and identified a little with Morgan and her issues with her self-confidence. Overall, it was a fun read, but nothing groundbreaking. Great for fans of the fake dating trope who want a little sapphic fantasy twist.
Thank you to Netgalley and Publisher for granting me access to this E-ARC.
First off thst cover. It's stunning. It screams read me.
The premise of this book sounds good. However I don't think it was done particularly well.
Neither FMC were likeable enough for me to want to route for them as a couple.
The overall plot of the book was messy.
However it was a fun (ish) Halloween season read and the witting style was enjoyable enough for me to be willing to give the authors next book a shot.
This was a very enjoyable and cosy read, perfect for this time of year! Witchy sapphic romance is right up my street so I thoroughly enjoyed exploring a new magical world.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the e-book for review :)
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with an ARC of this book. This Spells Disaster is a truly enjoyable witchy romance novel. The characters were intriguing, and the author skilfully pulls you into their world.
I was very excited about this book from the description, an enchanting sapphic romantic comedy, however it was a bit disappointing. I wasn’t a fan of Morgan’s character or anything that she did and I think the miscommunication trope was a bit too much for me, especially for a sapphic relationship it didn’t really work
Based on the synopsis, this should have been right up my alley. I adore sapphic and especially witchy books, but for some reason I just couldn’t get into this one. I think the pacing was a little off for me and had to DNF
Thank you to NetGalley and Penguin Random House for providing me with an e-ARC for This Spells Disaster,
This is the queer, cosy, small town romance that everyone needs in their lives this spooky season. During the New England Witches' Festival, Morgan finds herself pretending to be the girlfriend of her long-time crush and minor celebrity. There's fake-dating, love potions and positive bisexual representation.
While I'm not a big fan of the miscommunication trop and, if I'm honest, it is a little predictable, This Spells Disaster offers a cosy romantic comedy which is fun to read and enjoy without setting the reader on edge. Again, did I mention there's fake dating?
It does exactly what it sets out to do and I know a LOT of readers will be swooning over Rory.
For me, this was a solid 5/5, purely thanks tot he small-town cosy feel and the way the magic was portrayed. One of my fave books of the year!
I’m a sucker for magic and lesbian witches so this was the perfect read. There was a lot of cute moments and the mishap that resulted in the events was a great set up for the story.
I did think some of Morgan’s behaviour towards Rory at times seemed a bit too much and came across as childish at times but overall I appreciated the romance between the two. I loved watching the feelings become real and all the moments that came with it.
Also the world building was amazing and I was sucked in from the moment I picked this book up. Will definitely be rereading this book and recommending it to others
(4.5 stars) This was such a cute fun read!! I absolutely adoreddddd the main characters and their relationship, it was goofy and fun and full of love - which, coincidentally, is what I love! The only downside for me was the whole ‘shit I’ve given her a love potion, I’ve got to avoid her’ part which like PLEASEEEEEEE I couldn’t cope, I almost ALMOST DNF’d at this point even though I was thoroughly enjoying it before then, but that still wasn’t enough to put my rating down that much! Truly autumnal vibes and I loooove!!
Right let me say this first off. There was issues with this books formatting from Netgalley and thanks to that it did ruin my read of this book as it keep missing "FF" and "FI" for certain words.
But thanks to my dyslexic brain I was able to still read it.
Good easy to go with plot, a little predictable in places but over all I enjoyed it as the rom-com it was
This was such a cute witchy sapphic romance. I loved the fake dating, the tension and the characters. I’m excited to read more from this author!
I really enjoyed this super sweet sapphic fake dating story! It’s a really fun cosy witchy setting slightly reminiscent of The Ex Hex, with its autumn festival and coven community, and the central relationship is really lovely. Some of the emotional beats got a little repetitive towards the end – there’s a focus on self-confidence and self-love in one too many conversations that could have have developed other areas of the characters, but overall this is one of my favourites of this whole genre so far. CW: love potion, sort of, dealt with respectfully – I only mention it because the author does and not because it’s problematic.
