Here's the thing about me: you say ghostly romance, and I am in—no questions asked. Jillian moves into a new apartment in New York, and sure, the décor makes it look like a porn set, but this is her own space, away from her parents. As soon as she moves in though, she realizes that the apartment is already occupied by a sexy ghost named Daniel.
I'll start with the positives. I've read a number of ghostly romances, but Sarah Ready's version is unique. I really like the way the author incorporated the ghostly trope. The first thing I usually wonder is how can a ghost and a human live HEA? Let's just say that I really like the author's version of that. I had never come across it before, but it worked especially well here. To be honest, I only kept reading this book because I wanted to know how Jillian and Daniel would live HEA. I'm glad I pushed through because I liked the resolution of the ghostly situation.
But I also have so many issues with this book and I don't even know where to start. Don't get me wrong, the prose is good, but the story is waaaayyyyyy too long. The first half of the story falls victim to long-winded play by play narration. There are so many lengthy descriptions of superfluous things, making the book longer than it should be. I also did not like the insta-love. I literally could not understand how Jillian and Daniel fell in love so quickly?? Not to mention that Jillian was super clingy with Daniel, even though she knew nothing about the man. Daniel was also immediately jealous of Jillian's dates, but I think his jealousy made a bit more sense after we find out the truth behind his ~ghostliness~ I think what bugged me the most is that Jillian and Daniel didn't even try to figure out why he was haunting her LOL. They just assumed he was here to help her with her love life and her advice column. But they didn't even try to figure out who he was, how he died, and why he's linked to her only. They were both so focused on him being here to help her, without ever questioning WHY. It was so annoying and frustrating.
I had such a hard time with Jillian omg. She was just so stupid. She wanted Daniel to stay with her even though he was dead LOL. Instead of wanting him to move on to "the light," she selfishly wanted him to haunt her for the rest of her life. She was so disgustingly needy. Also, the ghost sex scenes were WEIRD LOL. I'm sorry, she literally could not feel anything except for cold breezes. Please explain to me how she was able to find pleasure?? I'm so confused!!
As for the second half of the story, it was interesting enough, especially after finding out the truth behind Daniel's ghostliness. But I still found Jillian super irritating with the way she kept inserting herself into other people's lives. I just could not stand her. The climax was fine...but the conflict leading to the climax was stupidly executed.
Anyway...I kind of rambled. I really wish I loved this one. The concept is interesting. The prose is good. The execution and the characters are just not my cup of tea. I didn't buy into the romance at all. Honestly, it's not the worst book I've ever read, but I just did not like it overall.
P.S. Is Jillian Persian? Why is her white mom named Geeta? I'm so confused. I have questions about Jillian's background.
P.P.S. Not one, but two epilogues. This book is unnecessarily long. The second epilogue is told from Daniel's POV, but not even that made me happy. I just wanted the book to be over.
I loved the concept for this, but felt it was a little drawn out.
It was a sweet story and the characters had good chemistry.
I felt like there were too many supporting characters and a few could have been dropped and it wouldn't have affected the story much.
I liked it, but I didn't love it.
I absolutely adored this book! Jill moved into a NY apartment no questions asked. However, she isn't the only one occupying the space. I wasn't sure about the concept of Jill falling for a ghost. I was totally wrong and found myself rooting for Daniel multiple times. I also loved her work environment and coworkers.
Thank you so much NetGallery for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
4 stars for this paranormal romance. I mostly read thrillers and mysteries, but once in a while I need a good love story to break up all the darkness. And paranormal is not typically my favorite genre, but I do enjoy an occasional ghost story, so the description of this one had me intrigued. And I was not disappointed.
Jillian writes a relationship advice column for a newspaper in NYC, which is ironic because she literally can not talk to men (other than her dad, her boss, and maybe one or two others). Her own love life consists of blind dates that her old neighbor sets her up on - but she doesn't speak to these dates, so they are all quite awkward. But on the day she moves into her new apartment, she discovers that it comes with a ghost. And not just any ghost, but a half naked male ghost named Daniel, and most shocking of all, she can talk to him. Over the next few weeks, they realize that they are meant to help each other, but what that means they don't yet know.
I didn't fully relate to Jillian; she is obsessed with Star Trek and that all leaves me cold. And for the longest time, I did not understand why she couldn't talk to men, and found all of that very annoying. For the first half, I was sure I would rate it 3 stars and I admittedly had to push myself to keep reading it. But then the second half got my attention and pulled me fully back in. I definitely had not figured out the ghost situation, so that was fun and surprising. And the last third, I couldn't wait to see how it would all resolve, and I really liked it. So I'm happy to give it 4 stars, and will definitely read more from this author in the future.
A big thank you to NetGalley and W.W. Crown for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book (thank you!) I absolutely loved this story. The ultimate romance for all "Trekkies" out there!
Ghosted is a beautifully written book about the trials and tribulations of finding yourself as well as the one you love. It also very much gives similar vibes to the 2005 film "Just Like Heaven".
It is so easy to connect to Jillian, a long time Star Trek fan and a romance columnist that has no idea how to talk to men. Jillian's backstory is very interesting to read about which sets the tone for most of this book.
Daniel (Jillian's love interest) is also instantly very likeable with great sarcastic humour while also learning to come to terms with his own reality.
The spice levels for this plot are perfectly well balanced and I love the fact that there is plenty of science and philosophical related facts to fill the gaps within the romance rich plot. I'm a nerd so this was something that made Ghosted an even better read.
There was a great plot twist which I did not see coming, which made me feel a wide range of emotions.
Ghosted is a book that really did fill me "with joy, with love, with gratitude" and it is a book that I can highly recommend and I look forward to reading more from this author.
I have read three of @sarahreadyauthor books now and I just love her. This one surprised me 100%. The description of a girl falling for a ghost was one I was completely unsure of but had to pick up because I loved #frenchholiday and #thespacebetween.
Jillian is a woman who is dealing with something in her past and when she moves into a new apartment “haunted” by a ghost, she makes the most of it. The friendship they build is really cute and turns into more. Daniel helps her grow as a person and overcome her past. When the tables are turned, Jillian learns what it means to be in love and do anything you can to save the one you love.
Shockingly, this was a beautiful story. The ghost element threw me at first but it all came together. The geeky elements were a nice comedic relief and I adored Fran and Jillian’s coworkers. Each with their own quirks. I really enjoy Ready’s detailed descriptions of scenery. I can’t wait for her next one.
Trekkie Jillian finds herself unable to speak to men. That is until she meets Daniel. She finds conversation flows naturally between them, their chemistry is off the charts, only downside? Daniel is a ghost.
Turns out Daniel’s purpose is to help Jillian flourish and confront her fears and feelings. But what happens when she develops feelings for him?
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the dynamic of the fab five of Jilly’s work. Fran was an absolute treasure, and Daniel is a golden retriever of a man. The plot kept me engaged. I highly recommend snagging a copy when it comes out on September 26,2023.
✨Arc review of Ghosted by Sarah Ready
⭐⭐⭐⭐
I LOVED THIS BOOK (thanks @netgalley )
It's definitely not my normal read. The spice level is 🫑 but the yearning had me kicking my feet. The storyline isn't just "There's a hot ghost in my apartment" either. There's also emotional healing and a surprise plot twist that I obviously cannot reveal but it's GOOD. I was listening to the audio and ran to grab the ebook because I had to finish it late into the night. Did I cry under my covers at the end? MAYBE, BUT YOULL NEVER GET THAT INFORMATION OUT OF ME 😅
Read this if you like
✨ Hot shirtless ghosts

✨ Happily ever afters in every timeline
I really liked this story and the ghost plot was fun, if a little weird at times. This book broke me and then put me back together, made me cry happy and sad tears, and I really enjoyed all of the characters. I thought I knew where the story was going to go but it ended up not happening the way I predicted. I liked the way the author took it and how she wrote the ending. I didn't quite understand Jillian's unableness to speak to men but all of a sudden she was just able to do it again. There were a lot of Star Trek references but as someone who doesn't know/care about Star Trek, they didn't bother me. I think this was a pretty fast paced romance and if you've enjoyed the authors previous books, you will probably enjoy this one. You just have to be okay with paranormal romance and probably suspend your disbelief.
Thank you to NetGalley and W.W. Crown for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Jillian has social awkwardness, she can't talk to men she could date, but she is still trying to date even though they are more of a monologue than a dialogue.
The first day at her new apartment a suprise is waiting for her there in a form of a half dressed man who funny enough she has no problem talking to. Which is strange, but not so strange as she soon realises that this man is actually a ghost.
Daniel doesn't remember much about his life, he has only some glimpses of it, the only thing he knows is that he is drawn to Jillian. He thinks that he is send to help her, so he takes it upon him to follow her everywhere she goes, he identifies the areas she needs his assistance and he is more than happy to provide it.
Jillian is more than skeptical at first but it seems like she must let him help her, so that she can help him in return. They are spending all their time together, trying to fix her work and dating life but the pull they feel to each other only grows stronger the more time passes.
This is a fell good romance, with steam and a very serendipitous feeling. I loved how they first became friends and how supportive they were to the other. They were ready to fight in order to keep their love in any way they could.
I read and listened to both the audiobook and ebook and I loved both formats so much. The audiobook was wonderful, both narrators were great and it was lovely how they brought the story to life.
* I received an ARC and this is my honest opinion.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book. All opinions are 100% my own.
Sarah Ready is becoming one of my favourite authors. I know I’ll love her books every time I pick one up and this one didn’t disappoint!
This book gives me Ashley Poston vibes and was a perfect balance of romance and magical realism. I constantly felt a mix of happy, sad and frustrated for the main characters. The main characters themselves were perfectly flawed.
My only issue is how quickly characters decide to get married. This is a common theme across Sarah ready books and I prefer to see characters get to know each other a bit first and have a little bit of conflict before committing so hard.
I usually love Sarah Ready's books, but for some reason I just didn't feel that invested in this one. There wasn't anything inherently wrong with it, but it just wasn't the right book for me apparently. I would still recommend her to everyone, and I look forward to seeing what she writes next!
⭐⭐⭐⭐ - 4.5 stars
I received Ghosted from NetGalley to review.
We meet Jillian as she's moving into her new apartment in New York, the mirrored, sex-den of an apartment. As soon as her family leaves, she starts to unpack when a half-naked man appears out of nowhere. Jillian freaks out, throwing things at the man (Daniel). When he disappears she immediately calls her best friend and the conversation turns to science and ghosts! Jillian falls asleep that night wondering about the half-naked man and if he will be back.
When Daniel shows back up the next morning while Jillian is in the shower, things get interesting! Daniel cannot remember anything except that he knows Jillian. Jillian swears she hasn't met Daniel. As the two try to figure out who Daniel is, and how to navigate Jillian's dating life and work issues, they develop a strong bond. Will they figure out who Daniel is and how they know each other? Will one of Jullian's dates be 'the one'? While at times it seemed the book was a little too long, I'm not sure what part I would cut to make it shorter!
SPOILERS AHEAD:
I read 'The Seven Year Slip' a few weeks before reading this book. When we learned that Daniel is in fact a ghost I was convinced he was in a coma similar to 'The Seven Year Slip.' I was pleasantly surprised to find out that wasn't the case. While I don't understand all of the time slips and alternative realities (maybe I need to re-read some of those parts), I love that they were saving each other.
My favorite part of the entire book is Daniel saying that Jillian was his light in the darkness. That he could always find his light!!! At the end of the book, we learn what happens in the alternative and how Daniel made his way to Jillian originally. I love that after only a short period of time, Daniel knew Jillian was the piece to brighten his life.
I have lots of mixed emotions about this, if you don't like the beginning just make it to 60% of the book because the entire plot changes for the better!
I wasn't a fan of all of the star trek references but that could just be me because I have zero interest in that stuff. And honestly when Serena was piecing together all of the things about Daniel and why he went away my jaw was on the school library floor!
This is such a crazy concept and great to get you out of the real world for a solid 6 hours (according to my kindle) and the fact that someone thought of this... there is definitely no other book like it.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC of this book in return for an honest review.
This book was so sweet! It takes on so many turns and you are hoping for the best the whole time. It starts off so strong but towards the end it started to fall for me, just a little! This book has a little bit of everything in and the romance is adorable. I would definitely recommend this book! I wish her friend or Fran was in the book a little bit more so it wasn’t so focused on just the romance. The narrator was amazing! She was really captivating and kept the story moving nicely! She did a great job with the different characters’ voices. Would definitely listen to more books from this narrator.
Dating is tough enough and adding the element of the undead is not relationship goals. Can true love overcome getting ghosted? Ghosted is a heartwarming story about love, loss, and second chances. It is trope heavy, but Ready makes this story unique with a fine mix of dynamic dialogue and full bodied (even if one is transparent) characters. Jillian is complex and likable and Daniel is charming and complex. The supporting cast is also well developed and add to the humor and warmth. The ending s a little predictable, but the journey to the HEA has enough turns and twists to keep you engaged. Loved the balance of humor, romance, and overcoming obstacles. Highly recommend!.
This was a good refreshing read that found me exactly when I needed it
I enjoyed and had a good laugh, I found myself smiling ever so often from all the main leads interactions ( I even learned a few dating tips 😜)
I found all the characters fascinating despite having their odd and unique personalities
I even thought the daily expose team would be a fun and weird group to work with
The plot was intriguing and although I was skeptical about it and it had a bit of confusion since I still don’t understand how Daniel could be both a ghost and alive at the same time, I still loved it
What I didn’t like:-
Sometimes I found myself skipping a few lines because they held too much explanation and random theories on the phone calls
All in all , it was a lovely book and I give it a 3.5 star and I’d recommend it to anyone who wishes to get lost in a fun, quick beautiful romance with a good laugh
3.5/5 stars - thank you netgalley, the author & publisher for an earc in an exchange for an honest review.
the pacing of this book felt off, mostly because i had a good time with the first 20%, a horrible time up until 60%, and it was wonderful after that. the beginning felt unnecessarily long and the middle didn’t offer much, but once the “plot twist” happened i was sucked in. i think it could have had maybe a tad better execution or been introduced earlier, but it also felt incredibly impactful.
the second epilogue deserves a thousand stars on its own accord.
i would love to see if anything else comes of this book or alternate, similar stories. i think the premise is awesome and it’s certainly not a new story by any means but i am a sucker for love and second chances and the like
‘Ghosted’ by Sarah Ready is a ‘pull at your heart strings’ romance novel based on Jillian and Daniel. Jillian is a romance and relationship column writer, has been on over 100 dates, but strangely finds it hard to talk to men. Daniel, well he is a ghost, and a hot one at that! The story takes us through their kindling romance, leaving us wondering early on if a relationship can blossom between the two.
Sarah Ready made me fall in love with a ghost early on in the book. The writing was fast paced and so many events happened in the story, the reader is on the edge of their seat wondering what will come next. At first the story reminded me of ‘Just Like Heaven’ and the banter between Jillian and Daniel was exceptional! At the 60% mark we are taken on a journey we did not see coming. This is a heartwarming, romance novel that everyone should read.
Thank you NetGalley and W.W. Crown for the advanced copy.
Rating: 4/5 stars
"Ghosted" by Sarah Ready holds undeniable potential, though I can't help but wish it were a draft instead of a final copy. With a few adjustments, this could blossom into an outstanding romance novel. While the initial half is marred by unnecessary gimmicks, weak relationship development, and questionable views on mental health, the latter half largely rectifies these issues, introducing charming characters and a captivating premise.
Let's break down the basics: Jillian, an attractive trekkie, struggles to talk with men despite her role as a romance columnist. A move to a new apartment reveals a haunting surprise—a sexy, shirtless ghost named Daniel, with whom she CAN communicate. Daniel takes it upon himself to revitalize Jillian's love life, leading to a seemingly impossible romance between the two.
You might be wondering, as I did, whether "Ghosted" resembles the Reese Witherspoon/Mark Ruffalo movie "Just Like Heaven." The answer is no. Daniel isn't in a coma. The narrative takes an unforeseen and engaging twist around halfway through, making the journey through the initial half almost worthwhile. However, discussing this twist without spoiling its surprise proves challenging.
Now, onto my grievances. Jillian's struggle with talking to men feels entirely superfluous and, quite honestly, infuriating. Her difficulty extends beyond interacting with attractive men; she can't speak to ANY men. The author attempts to rationalize this as a response to grief that's resistant to therapy. In my view, Jillian's predicament is treated far too lightly. This isn't mere shyness—it's almost akin to selective mutism, demanding more concern and help from those around her.
Furthermore, it's hard to believe that a woman who's both a virgin and unable to talk with men could sustain a job as a love expert for NINE years. It's simply implausible. This mute-with-men romance columnist angle seems like a catchy soundbite for a book blurb, detracting from the central romance. Jillian and Daniel's ill-fated love story would hold more authenticity without this contrived element. A paranormal love tale filled with playful banter and sexual tension would be far more compelling than awkward anxieties and Star Trek references.
In conclusion, "Ghosted" begins with a distinctive concept that regrettably gets clouded by vexing contrivances and unrealistic relationship dynamics. However, Sarah Ready salvages the story quality with an unexpected twist that surfaces midway. This twist ushers in an even more distinctive premise, lovable characters, and a much more credible romance.
