I have read previous books by this author and enjoyed them but I found it impossible to enjoy this one. The plot and characters were underwhelming and annoying, and at times it all seemed a bit silly. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the arc. I’m sure other readers will love it but it wasn’t for me I’m afraid.

I've enjoyed a couple of previous books by Mel McGrath, but unfortunately this really didn't engage me and I found it a bit of a slog to get through.

After the tragic death of their young daughter in a hit and run accident, Meg and Marc have moved into a cottage inherited from Marc's father, a former rock musician. Marc is also a musician in an orchestra. I'm not sure if Meg has or had a job. They've been seeing a therapist, Janette, who then pops up in the new area claiming to be looking for a house there. (Suspish.) We also hear about another little girl who went missing many years earlier. Is there a connection? Maybe. Maybe not.

For whatever reason I just couldn't connect with this story. The writing doesn't really flow very well and the characters, sympathetic though I was to their situation, didn't seem especially credible. Therapist Janette also wasn't particularly believable and the truth, when revealed, is distinctly underwhelming.

Names are reused for no apparent reason - we're told of a couple with the fairly unusual surname of Truelove who were relatives of a missing girl, then later read about a solicitor with the same name. I assumed there would prove to be a connection, but apparently not.

Because I wasn't engaged in the plot I'm sure there was stuff I missed, possibly important stuff. As it is I'm already struggling to remember what happened.

As I said, I've enjoyed other work by the author and I don't like to leave a negative review. Some people may well enjoy this book more, but it wasn't for me.

Thanks for the opportunity to read and review an advance copy.

First book I have read from this author and it did not disappoint fantastic. I really enjoyed this had me gripped from start to finish.

Meg and Marc have lost their daughter in a horrific accident. With them both experiencing a devastating trauma they saw a therapist Janette who them process their grief. Now Desperate for some distance from their grief, they relocate to a small town where they know no one. They’re both sure it’s just coincidence that Janette has moved there too, and at first it feels reassuring to have a friendly face nearby. But in those dark, desperate days after the accident, they shared everything with her. Secrets they haven’t even told each other. And it seems Janette doesn’t want to just be their therapist anymore. Or even their friend.

This was a gripping emotional read which I will definitely be recommending. I will be watching out for more books from this author. Thanks to netgallery and the publisher for my advanced copy.

This book seems to be unfinished. There were a lot of errors and mistakes in the writing. The plot was slow and very predictable. It was hard to finish reading but I persevered in order to give a balanced review.

Awesome.
When Meg and Marc lost their daughter, their family collapsed in on itself. Nobody could understand the trauma that they carried so it made sense when they turned to a therapist, Janette to help process their grief. Desperate for some distance from their grief, they relocate to a small town where they know no one. They’re sure it’s a happy coincidence that Janette has moved there too, and at first it feels reassuring to have a friendly face nearby. But in those dark, desperate days after the accident, they shared everything with her. Secrets they haven’t even told each other. And it seems Janette doesn’t want to just be their therapist anymore. Or even their friend…
I loved it. Mel McGrath is back with a bang.
Thanks to NetGalley and HQ for giving me an advance copy.

I really struggled to get into this book, very slow paced, lots of letters missing in words which made it difficult to read.

I did not care for this book. It felt way too drawn out and slow. There were a lot of letters missing in words as well so you really had to guess as what the author was saying. Meg and Marc move away once their daughter is killed by a hit and run. I feel like the story could have been better if this hit and run happened elsewhere in the book; rather than at the beginning. They move to a little community where they are treated like outsiders. The police have no problems locking up Marc but refuse to breath test others who were driving drunk and got into accidents. It felt too predictable with the therapist worming her way in. I guess the ending was good, but just was not that interesting.
