This is a very cool book that tells the stories of Norse mythology. The stories are extremely accessible and entertaining and are fun for grownups and child alike.
Thanks to NetGalley for this copy.
This beautifully illustrated compellation of Norse myths to inform and entertain. This book would be great to introduce or compare mythologies across cultures for upper elementary students. Also a great coffee table book with the beautiful artworks, this text will jazz up any bookshelf (whether it be personal, in the classroom, or at school).
An absolutely beautiful collection of the deities within Norse Mythology. I ended up buying a physical copy to add to my own personal collection.
The writing style is brilliant and the accompanying illustrations are just breath taking.
Legends of Norse Mythology by Tom Birkett is an approachable guide with all the basics and beautiful illustrations by Isabella Mazzanti. It refreshed some things I had learned in a high school Mythology course, and I feel it would be great for middle-grade readers and onwards.
The legends of Norse Mythology doesn't contain only their gods like the Greek or Roman Mythology, but their giants, and animals too. Though a bit vague, but reading about the myth helps us to know better of the people. These Norse were so fierce because they knew that once died in battle, the Valkyries will take them to the final resting place, for example. This book is written in scholarly manner, thus well versed and quite detailed.
Isabella Mazzanti, my beloved... you will find some of the most beautiful, hand-coloured illustrations on the current artist landscape in this book, and I would be lying if I said the illustrator wasn't the sole reason I grabbed this eARC. Some of it is sadly lost amid a few text layout whoopsies, but I can still look past those and lovingly at the art.
This time of year I am always looking for books to buy for Jolabokaflod (a tradition in Iceland celebrated on Christmas Eve by giving/receiving books) and this book is perfect for the type we read during this time. It is beautiful with gorgeous illustrations. Each story tells of gods, giants, monsters and heroes. I would definitely recommend this book for adults and teens who enjoy illustrated history.
I want to thank NetGalley, Tom Birkett and Quarto Publishing Group – Wide Eyed Editions, Wide Eyed Editions for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.
A great intro to the Norse story’s. My daughter was very impressed with both the story and the images!
Stunning illustrations and well curated stories make for a magical read of tales I was both familiar with a new to.
First off, this art! Wow! It is stunning. The stories chosen were an excellent choice. I love having the gods included because it makes it easier for those new to Norse mythology to understand the stories. I cannot wait to get a copy of this book. One of my favorite Norse books I have read.

Legends of Norse Mythology by Tom Birkett
A beautiful, concise, intriguing introduction to Norse Mythology ~ This is a book that I can see adults and those younger that are interested in learning more about this subject reading as an introduction.
I realized as I read that there are many names I recognized from books, television series, and movies and though I had an inkling they were from the Norse mythology, legends, old religion, and/or fairytales…this book helped me see them more clearly. I learned about the nine worlds, who lived in each one of the worlds, what the rainbow bridge was and who guarded it, found out what each one was known for, who they were married to, who their children were, some of their stories and magical items, and that they were all going to live the life fate had set for them and that not much if anything could be done about that fate. It was interesting and informative and more than I could absorb in one sitting. It is a book I would gladly add to my library.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing-Wide Eyed Editions for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4-5 Stars
I read this one to my little sister; she got to the end with more questions unanswered than anything else. There were no myths nor legends, only the bare bones of a biography for each mythical being whose presence was deemed fundamental, the details of which were however never brought up again.
A bit reductive and written more like a school report than a children's book, but with beautiful illustrations and surprisingly insightful, although very little, information - such as how a pair of the gods named the week days in the English language.
"Sometimes these stories help us to understand ourselves, what we're scared of, and why we do the things we do. But above all, the Norse myths are timeless tales just waiting to be told..."
Dr Birkett's Legend's of Norse Mythology is an enchanting overview into the thrilling world of Norse Mythology. The book includes a wide range of retellings including The Story of the Nine Worlds, The Story of Ragnarok, stories about Norse gods, monsters, giants, and more. Beautifully illustrated by Isabella Mazzanti, Birkett's book is absolutely perfect for those who enjoy Norse mythology and it would also be a wonderful introduction to Norse tales for children ages 9 and up.
Kind thanks to Quatro Publishing Group - Wide Eyed Editions and NetGalley for an advanced reading copy of this captivating book!
I loved this book, my only slight complaint is that on a (large) ipad it was quite tricky to read. This may be the format of the preview only though, I had to zoom in/out quite a lot.
I received an advance copy for free from NetGalley, on the expectation that I would provide an honest review.

This lovely non fiction book starts off by giving an introduction to the Nine Worlds as well as Norse Gods. Norse folklore is full of mischief and mayhem, the illustrations really bring the words to life.
The illustrations that go along with the tales are beautiful and very engaging for both children and adults. The book is a great introduction to Norse mythology. I do think I spent more time admiring the illustrations as the information was short and sharp.
This was such a cute and beginner friendly way of teaching about Norse myths. I loved the pictures and that you used they/them for Loki.
OMG the art in this is breath taking, I absolutely loved it. A great beginners guide to the Norse myths. I will absolutely be purchasing this for the bookstore.
The perfect book to be introduced into Norse mythology.
Interestingly illustrated with artwork that captures the sense of place, subject matter and the ancient tales related here.
What I was particularly pleased to see was that each person whether a God or a dwarf was afforded the same space within the book. In this way the finished publication appears even-handed and allows nothing to overwhelm or derail the narrative.
Informative, wide-ranging and inter-related facts and subjects are shared in memorable segments. Therefore no-one dominates the whole and each topic is balanced and easy to understand.
It would perhaps benefit from some overlapping diagrams or illustrations such as a “family tree’ or the many different worlds. However, this stops short of any criticism as this book delivers in its objective. I have had my eyes opened into these legends and oral histories from a unique culture that has ideas and deities but which perhaps overspill into other religious and cultural ideas
A complimentary glossary and these intricate and colourful illustrations make this a young person friendly book.
This is a great guide to Norse mythology. It details all of the gods and goddesses as well includes a telling of Ragnarok. It also tells of anything surrounding and influenced by these Norse tales.
