Kate Frost’s One Winter’s Night is a heartwarming and emotional tale that blends the magic of Christmas with the stark beauty of Iceland, creating a rich backdrop for a story about loss, healing, and self-discovery.
The novel follows Molly Bliss, who is grappling with deep grief after the devastating loss of her parents. As Christmas approaches, Molly seems to teeter on the edge of rock bottom. To escape her sorrow and rekindle her relationship with her boyfriend, Howard, she plans a trip to Iceland to join her sister, Claudia, for the holidays. However, when Howard cancels last minute, Molly starts questioning not just her relationship, but the choices she’s made in life.
One Winter’s Night is a story about second chances—at love, at happiness, and at life. It’s a story that speaks to the healing power of time, nature, and allowing oneself the freedom to embrace new possibilities. Molly’s journey is one that many readers will find relatable, and by the time the novel reaches its heartfelt conclusion, it’s clear that Molly has not only found her place in the world again, but she’s learned how to trust in herself and her own dreams.
For those looking for a feel-good, emotional read wrapped in the beauty of Iceland’s winter landscape and the warmth of Christmas, One Winter’s Night is a perfect choice. It’s a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there’s always a flicker of hope waiting to be rekindled.
The main character in One Winter's Night is Molly, who is suffering from grief after losing both her parents, first her father and then her mother who she cared for, for about two years. She’s just sold the family home, so it’s dealing with a lot of sadness and upset. Her older sister lives in Iceland with her husband and two children. They own a guest lodge where Molly and her boyfriend, Howard are going to spend some time over Christmas and new year. Although Howard hasn’t been particularly comforting with everything Molly has being going through, she believes the trip to Iceland will reignite their relationship. However, another disappointment lands on Molly when Howard says he needs a few extra days at work before flying out to Iceland, so Molly goes on her own to spend some much-needed time with her sister, brother-in-law and her niece and nephew. Once Molly is in Iceland there are a few other characters who have come to spend the festive period in Iceland including a previous fling of Molly’s, a couple celebrating their anniversary, a recently engaged couple and two best friends. We get to know the backgrounds of these characters, but they are so cleverly revealed throughout the book, it has a very natural flow to the whole story. However, you can expect a storm or two both outside of and inside the lodge.
The descriptions of Iceland are amazing and so good that when I looked up the places on the internet my imagination had conjured them almost perfectly.
It's an excellent piece of writing making me want to visit Iceland and had me caring about what happened to the characters.
I wouldn't call this a romance novel although there are romantic moments, but it’s more about Molly healing and learning to move forward. It’s a perfect book for the upcoming chilly nights. It’s a contrast between the icy cold and breathtaking beauty of the landscape and the warmth and joy of family and friendship.
Kate Frost’s One Winter’s Night is a spellbinding tale of healing, renewal and redemption that will touch your heart.
Christmas might be just around the corner, but Molly Bliss is feeling far from festive. With the heart-breaking loss of her parents, Molly is wracked by grief and hopes that spending time with her sister Claudia in Iceland will help her through this very difficult time. With her boyfriend Howard coming along, Molly is intent on giving him her full attention and is hoping that this holiday will help bring them closer together – until Howard ‘accidentally’ misses his flight! Molly immediately realises that this is the perfect opportunity to rethink her life surrounded by her nearest and dearest – however, on arrival in Iceland, a heart-broken Molly realises that she has never felt so alone.
Molly is not going to let this time in Iceland go to waste and hopes to take this time out of her ordinary life to rediscover who she really is and to figure out what her future holds for her. Striking a connection with old flame Leifur and his friend James, Molly begins to realise that she needs to stop letting her fears and doubts get in the way of her happiness and to look for joy and fulfilment closer to home.
In the land of fire and ice, Molly realises that life is for living and that with courage and determination everything she has always wished for can be within her grasp – but only if she believes in herself, stops doubting her capabilities and grasps this unexpected second chance at happiness with both hands.
Make yourself a great big mug of cocoa, huddle up under your comfiest blanket and get ready to travel to Iceland with Kate Frost and One Winter’s Night. Atmospheric, emotional, poignant and full of wonderful characters it is hard not to care about, One Winter’s Night is a gorgeously escapist tale about starting over, falling in love and finding the strength and courage to dust yourself off and begin anew that will make you laugh and cry.
Romantic, enchanting and enjoyable, as the weather begins to colder, switch off your phone and clear your diary and spend some time in Iceland with Kate Frost’s latest uplifting tale, One Winter’s Night.
I wouldn’t normally read a book set at Christmas in August, but the lure of an Icelandic setting proved too hard to resist!
The wonderful descriptions of the country of fire and ice are enough to make any reader hanker for a visit and it certainly evoked plenty of moments where you could imagine yourself there. it’s definitely made me want to make a return trip during the festive season!
The principal character Molly finds herself visiting family whilst grappling with almost crippling grief from the loss of her parents and having to deal with the breakdown of her relationship with boyfriend Howard.
It did feel at certain points that the references to the heartache she had suffered dominated the narrative more than necessary, but it was good to see her realise the need to embrace change and be more open about her emotions as the storyline progressed.
I loved the variety of characters staying at the lodge over Christmas and how, gradually, each one had their own story to reveal which in turn helped Molly process her own situation. The descriptions of the traditional Icelandic Christmas customs and delicacies were another highlight.
This is definitely one to curl up with in front of a roaring fire when the winter nights draw in!
With thanks to the author, Rachel at Random Resources and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to participate in the tour.
Such a beautiful location to set a book and I have to say I have never read a book set in Iceland. It was wonderful. A story of grief and trying to live again, moving on and finding true love. It warmed me right up!
I am a massive fan of Kate Frost and couldn't wait to read this one, it found its way to the top of the pile Christmas week and I enjoyed a cosy week of reading in my spare time taking in Molly's trip to snowy Iceland
A story full of love, fun and tinged with sadness, it was once again a book that pulls you in and makes you feel as if the characters are sitting in the room with you. An absolute corker and I can't wait to read the next release by this author
Read and reviewed in exchange for a free copy from NetGalley. I loved this book. The characters were well-written and engaging, the setting was beautiful (and added to my Iceland wanderlust even more!) and I was invested in the story. A lovely festive read.

Characters
Molly Bliss works in HR, has managed the process of her deceased parents’ estate mostly alone, and her boyfriend who she was hoping to reconnect with over Christmas misses his flight.
She’s already demonstrated her resilience, fortitude, and dedication before even getting to Iceland, but once there discovers that she needs to let in the emotional side as well. With the help of her sister, her sister’s family, and the other guests, she learns to open up, process her emotions and let others in.
Storyline
Molly heads to Iceland for Christmas full of hope of renewing her relationship with Howard while in the magical winter landscape of Iceland. But Howard misses his flight and delivers some news that Molly wasn’t expecting, making her trip to Iceland a whole new adventure.
Instead of renewing her relationship with Howard, she spends time renewing her relationship with herself, her sister and her sister’s family.
Overall Thoughts
I’ve enjoyed every book I’ve read set in Iceland. I don’t know what it is about that country and what the authors can evoke, but it’s always powerful and magical.
Kate has kept that feeling alive for me and really given us a taste of Iceland over the Christmas and New Year period.
While Molly was entirely relatable, we were also able to see how she reflected and really understood what she wanted from her life to figure out how she could get it. She had the perfect mix of personalities around her to enable her to grow emotionally, which really emphasizes the need for that to be there for ANYONE to grow.
While this is at it’s core a romance novel, it very much felt like a Chick Lit as the focus to me felt like it was on Molly and her learning to love herself and chase her dreams.
Lovely heart warming love story set in Iceland and Scotland telling a story of 2 sisters heart ache of losing parents sorrow and happiness throughout this book a must to read
This is another great Christmas read from Kate Frost!.
The story follows Molly who's been dealing with bereavement alone without much support. She's about to go and see her sister after many years apart but it seems that will be taken alone too even though she has a partner,(Howard). As the story progresses, it fills your mind with beautiful scenery in Iceland, The Northern Lights amongst many detailed descriptions of the country where her sister Claudia lives.
I was totally engrossed from the start, as usually happens with Kate's books and I didn't put it down until I reached the end with a sigh!!. It was all over!!. I will definitely give it 5* rating!!.
Many thanks to Boldwood Books for the chance to read this arc copy via Netgalley.

Really enjoyed this book. The writing was lovely and really let me imagine the setting. I liked the main character and could really feel the emotions coming off the page. Although it is set at Christmas, it's not 'Christmassey', it is more a story of a family and their relationships. A really enjoyable read for the wintertime, I recommend it!
Set mainly in Iceland, the land of fire and ice is almost another character in the story. Molly loves the country and there are some gorgeous descriptions of the environment and the biting cold. Taken out of her everyday routine, Molly has the perfect opportunity to take a hard look at her life and make some far reaching decisions. Still grieving for her mother, Molly appreciates having her sister and her family around her. Molly’s sister has a marriage which Molly envies and an equal relationship. By comparison, Molly’s relationship with Howard seems one- sided and dull.
Molly is not the only character who is at a crossroads in their life. The message of the story seems clear: live your best life and do not be afraid to take risks. This is a lovely festive read which you can get lost in. With its hopeful message and uplifting tone, it is an escapist read.
In short: be bold and true to yourself.
Losing your parents is tough anytime, but when it happens close to Christmas, it makes it worse. Molly Bliss is dealing with her grief, but also is looking forward to spending Christmas in Iceland with her sister's family and her boyfriend, Howard. When Howard misses his flight, then admits that he wants to end their relationship, Molly has a chance to determine what she really wants for her life. She reconnects with a young love, Leifur and meets his friend James. She and James connect over broken romances as well as the beauty of Iceland. She doesn't want to jump into a new relationship, but likes James' company. Will the quiet solace of Iceland allow Molly to heal and decide what she wants and needs at this time in her life?
I loved the setting of Reykjavik, Iceland at Christmas. Someday, I might make it to Iceland, but probably not at Christmas time. I really want to see the Northern lights, and loved the sound of hiking to the falls, snow, and reading by the fire with a hot chocolate on a cold night. Molly is dealing with a lot; the loss of her parents, selling the family home and a neglected relationship. When she finds out that Howard has been having an affair, I was surprised at how well she handled it. With the help of family, friends old and new as well as the amazing setting, her attitude helps her make decisions about what she wants to do with her life. With festive activities and great characters, this is a wonderful holiday story. There is a romance in the book, but it is not the whole story. I enjoyed this one and recommend it, especially for armchair travellers.
Love this story set in Iceland. really enjoyed reading about the country, loved the characters. highly recommend.
Molly Bliss plans to spend Christmas in Iceland with her sister Claudia after the loss of their parents. However, her boyfriend Howard misses his plane, leaving Molly feeling alone. While in Iceland, she reconnects with an old flame, Leifur, and his friend James. The stunning Icelandic landscape inspires Molly to reevaluate her life choices and embrace new possibilities. This heartwarming story explores love, loss, self-discovery, and the transformative power of the Icelandic scenery during the holiday season.
Molly's life has taken a turn for the worse. Still mourning the loss of her parents in a short time, she is looking forward to visiting her sister in Iceland. She looks forward to being with her boyfriend, but he is being very distant. When he misses his flight, it makes her rethink it all.
Away from normal life. lonely but still surrounded by family, she embarks on a tourney to rediscover who she is and find love amongst it.
I like the storyline, but had trouble staying focused on it.
I really liked Molly right from the start, but her boyfriend Howard gave me a bad feeling immediately. Once in Iceland visiting her sister it was touching to see how the sisters' relationship deepened and the sites in Iceland were so easy to picture. It was really as if I had been there myself, just without the cold.
I really liked all the different characters we meet in Iceland and the adventures they all go on and the whole vibe around Christmas time. Overall this was a lovely story with both drama and romance. It's heartwarming and uplifting and an adventure all from the comfort of your own home! I can't wait to see where Kate will take us next time!
This book is so sad in the beginning, as we meet Molly, who has just lost her mum to cancer, and boyfriend Howard is not supporting her at all.
But she has Christmas in Iceland with her sister to look forward to, and hopes to put her relationship right. However, things don't go to plan...
Kate Frost has a way of describing places that make you feel as though you're there with the characters. Not only the food and the scenery, but the sensations and emotions, all feel so real. Every book is a delight to read, and takes you on a journey to places you might not otherwise discover.
From heartbreak and sadness to happy ever after, this story is a roller coaster of emotions that will stay with you for a long time after reading it. Highly recommend.
The cover and title led me to this book and I am very pleased that it did.. A lovely heart rendering story and perfect for a winter read. 4 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley and publisher for this ARC
A big thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the eARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. I found this to be more of a self discovery then a romance. It starts off relatively slow. The setting is amazing-and for that alone the book was a worthwhile read. The book is definitely a roller coaster ride of emotions. Molly is lucky to have family support. 3.5 stars
