Loved this book. To begin with I thought it was going to be predictable like other psychological thrillers. Wow I was wrong. I did not see that twist coming at all. Not going to say anymore as I don’t want to spoil it for others but please please read this.
What a clever story, hooked from the start. It is a subject which is sometimes difficult to read – exploitation of young girls by older men but I do feel that this was done in a sensitive way. Tate and Helen were taken in by an older boy when they were 14 and what happened made their growing up difficult mainly due to guilt although the guilt really lay elsewhere. Tate and Helen lost touch for years and eventually met again and they relived the drama of that time. As the story continued a plot is hatched to make this man pay for his wrongdoings and things fall into place to make this happen. They are convinced he is still a threat to young girls and needs to be stopped. The plot continues. Tate is arrested on suspicion of murdering a woman who falls to her death but did she do it. In comes Maddy, Helen and Hayley and between them they contrive a story to lead the man to be convicted of murder and eventually that is what happens. The story is great and it all comes together because Maddy’s daughter, Emily, is being groomed by this man and Maddy is told of this. It is also the case that Jerry, the man in question, is Maddy’s husband’s boss and a friend of the family which makes Maddy even more determined to stop the grooming before it goes too far. I could go on and on about how much I enjoyed this book but will probably give the plot away. A great book and a must read
If you like your thrillers full of twists and turns, this could be the book for you. A tangle of lies, an actress, an aspiring author and girls damaged by a dangerous predator. But who is guilty? When her boss’s wife falls from their office building on the night of the Christmas party, Tate seems to incriminate herself at every turn. But the evidence is simply not there, and things are not quite what they seem.
The novel twists and winds through the complex plot - retelling the story from different perspectives and angles, shifting the the story slowly from one thing to another. Satisfying and gripping.
A woman falls to her death from a London bank's twenty-fifth-floor roof terrace and Tate Kinsella is arrested for her murder. Tate tells the police that she only met the victim the night before at the office party. The victim was threatening to jump from the roof, but Tate explains how she talked her down, went for a drink with them and then dropped them home.
Others at the party are giving the Police a different story to Tate and it suddenly appears that Tate is being framed. The police then start finding holes in Tates story and her lawyer doesn’t seem to believe Tate either.
But Tate is protecting someone. Who is it and why is she risking it all?
You know when you start reading a book and you think oh I know exactly where this is going but then it flips the whole thing on its head? Yup well that’s what this book did to me. I was convinced that I knew exactly what was happening and then boom major plot twist. Well written and really enjoyed the rollercoaster ride that it took me on. Absolutely brilliant thriller.
This was a book which, although really worth it in the end, made you keep your wits about you and concentrate on the complex and clever plot,
I thought one of the key twists (no spoilers) was obvious from early on, but I was very happy to keep reading to work out how the story would turn out.
Looking forward to the author's next one!
Thank you to netgalley and Random House for an advance copy of this book
I am conflicted about this book. It is well-written, with a good story, but I couldn't really get into it, and I felt it was all rather contrived, and trying too hard. Perhaps I will enjoy it more on a second reading at some point.
A really intriguing thriller. I was captivated from the start and had to keep concentrating on all the characters and who was in charge of the narative because it kept flicking bacwards and forwards as the plot unravels. To say any more would give the game away. But suffice to say, there are plenty of twists. It is very well thought out and incredibly complicated.
This is a story full of suspense and intrigue. It is impossible to say too much as it would give away some of the twists. What begins with an apparently straight forward murder when a woman (Tate Kinsella) is struck on the head and pushed of a tall building, soon becomes complicated as a key witness , working in the building, is accused of murder. Nothing in the story is as it originally seems and the twists continue to appear until midway through the story. The reason I have given 4 and not 5 stars is that the pace drops after all the secrets are revealed and the ending lacks the pace of the first half. I was expecting a final twist after it was hinted that there might be something that had been forgotten when the death was planned, but this never transpired and the story merely fizzled to a conclusion. Despite this, I enjoyed reading this novel mainly for the cleverness of the plot and the way the story twists and turns.
Wow what a great story with so many twists that I never saw the ending coming!!
This book will keep you gripped from start to finish.
Wow it gripped you from the start a woman falls from the 25th floor of a building in London Tate is arrested for her murder but did she actually do it there are so many twists and turns. She tells her solicitor exactly what happened but will they believe her it sounds very far fetched the story was really good. I haven’t heard of this writer before so can’t wait to read her other ones.
Thank you to Netgalley and Random House, UK, Cornerstone for an ARC
Tate was arrested on suspicion of murder, but is she guilty? As I turned the pages of this riveting, clever, book, I thought I knew the answer, only to find another twist in the story ensuring I was wrong. The plot is not only concerned with punishment of the guilty, but also protection of the innocent, and I devoured the pages, impatient to find out what happened next. I did not see the ending coming, it was a thrilling read. 5 stars.
Great read. Lots of twists and turns. Really interesting how all the different elements of the story come together.
Recommended.
A woman falls from a multi storey office block and dies instantly. Another woman who was with her earlier is arrested under suspicion of killing her.
This is a cleverly plotted thriller which defies expectations and takes you on a convoluted journey you're not expecting. It's hard to say much more without giving away the plot. Absurd at times it is nonetheless quite a satisfying read and I'd recommend it. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC.
4.5 rounded up
Anomalies?
Tate Kinsella is arrested on suspicion of the murder of a woman who falls from a roof terrace on the 25th floor of an office building in the heart of the city of London. Tate denies the charge, although she does feel it may be her fault. She tells her solicitor Sarah her version of events. Has she been framed or is there way more going on than meets the eye?
This is so good that it hooks me in right from the get go. There’s an unsettling vibe that is present throughout and it’s very, very tense. That too is maintained in the fast paced plot. Tate’s story becomes very convoluted and the anomalies are wide enough to drive a coach and horses through. It’s absolutely gripping and sends my brain off in a multitude of directions in an attempt to figure out the truth. I don’t, well, not entirely! My suspicion antenna is twitching in overdrive too, as the plot gets twistier and twistier. The mystery deepens to Mariana Trench levels and is just as murky as those waters. When the truth does wriggle its way to the surface, it’s very unexpected, just the way I like it!
There are open festering wounds here and much baggage weighing down, the sort that lingers and lingers as such damage has been done to several characters souls. The characterisation is excellent throughout as your root for Tate in her quest - whatever that maybe??!!!
I love the way the author chooses to tell this excellent tale, it’s divided into several parts, each takes the storytelling in different directions, adding layer upon complex layer. I like the way it ends, I wholeheartedly approve although parts of it makes you feel sad.
I’ve never read this author before, but I shall do my best to delve into her back catalogue! If you like psychological thrillers, they don’t get much better than this one in my opinion.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Random House, UK, Cornerstone for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
So intriguing I struggled to put this book down. A real page turner with a twist I did not see coming.
When a woman falls to her death from a London office building, a few uncomfortable questions are being asked. Soon you realize the plot is far from being a straight-forward who done it? Make yourself comfortable when you start reading this book - because you're going to be there a while. Loved it.
The book hooked me quite quickly. I found myself reading chapters and chapters before realising I need to take a break.
I was mostly never right about where the story was taking me. I kept making theories and noticing things trying to figure out what was going on. I didn’t even read the blurb so I truly went in blind.
The book was pretty messed up I’m not going to lie. It was kinda emotional and thrilling and with a mostly satisfying ending.
Oh and the main character Tate crazyyyyyy girl. Truly never knew what to think of her.
The twists were really cool. How things kept being revealed to us. I really did enjoy the writing of this book.
Overall a good book.
Thoroughly enjoyable read. The plot draws you in and keeps you guessing as to what will happen next. Well worked out by the author. Just as you think you know what happened, another part of the plot is exposed. Nice twist and a well deserved ending!
I really enjoyed this book where nothing is as it seems!! A woman falls to her death from a tall building. Another woman is arrested for murder. But the woman who fell is not who you first thought!! This is a really twisty turny story which will keep you on the edge of your seat to the end. Probably the best revenge plot ever! Thanks to NetGalley for a preview copy.
Copied to Goodreads.
An interesting unreliable narrator story with lots of twists and turns. What I love about this is I was nowhere near figuring out the ending. I loved how it all came together, a very clever plot.
This is the first book I've read by this author but I would definitely read more.
This is a thriller which combines elements of social commentary, murder mystery and domestic drama in way that I have rarely seen before.
Years ago, a friend of mine took a writing course, and said that fiction was forever ruined for her because she constantly looked for tropes and techniques in whatever she was reading. That has not been my experience as a writer, but it is true that I often find myself trying to guess at where the story might go, based on where I would take it myself .
This is frustrating when it comes to mystery stories in particular, because I often guess correctly long before I reach the ending. This is one of those rare books when I saw almost none of it coming! And it was cleverly done.
So, the good news is, The Woman on the Ledge was a really interesting read. The problem is, it's a hard book to review given the multiplicity of excellent twists, and the unrelenting complexity of the narrative. The key characters are well-drawn and very relatable, and the reader will find her emotions ambushed more than once in the course reading.
The book is skillfully plotted, and unexpected developments emerge at every turn. There are trigger warnings for health scares and sexual abuse. But overall, it's a memorable story, and one that I would recommend to thriller readers without hesitation. If you like solving mysteries as you're reading one, try this one! If you don't need to second guess what's happening, just relax and enjoy a wild storytelling ride...
