M A Hunter stirs a pot spiced with secrets, danger and terror in his latest page-turning thriller, The Trail.
Thirty years ago, Jess’s mother Nora had gone on a charity hike in the US – and never returned. Her loss had naturally had a devastating effect on Jess who had then been inspired to become an investigative journalist. Jess knows just how vital sources can be in her line of work, so when she receives a tip off that remains have been found in the very spot her mother had gone missing, she jumps on the first plane to the US determined to uncover the truth.
On arrival at the Appalachian mountains, Jess realises that this might just turn out to be her toughest assignment yet. Her questions are met with blank stares, non-committal answers and a desperate need for the locals to keep the past dead and buried. Jess refuses to give up and she will not rest until she discovers what really happened to her mother – even if it means putting herself in the eye of the storm and in the path of danger.
The Appalachian mountains had already claimed one member of her family. Will Jess end up following suit and fall foul of the same fate that had claimed her mother? Or could there be a twist in the tale nobody saw coming…
If you love T M Logan’s books, you are going to want to add M A Hunter’s thrillers to your must-buy list. The Trail is a nail-biting chiller that is action-packed, tension-filled and full of twists and turns that will leave you on the edge of your seat with your jaw on the floor.
A first-class thriller you will struggle to put down, M A Hunter’s The Trail is not to be missed.
This book was a interesting read. I really enjoyed the 2 different timelines stories, and found Nora's was the one who sucked me in. I didn't really care for the main character, the author said she was a 35 year old woman but she read as as young teen. Always complaining, nothing was every her fault. And then the ending was terrible, I felt so bad for Nora. I typically love this author but this one I had a hard time connecting with the main character.
I'll still read the next novel, but this one just wasn't' for me.
Wow this book was great!!!I thought I'd figured it out, but I was wrong! This was a great summer read, highly recommend!
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
This book sounded super interesting as I love adventure/camping books. I did enjoy it and even was able to easily follow along with the dual timelines. However the ending made things a bit disappointing. I think I would have given this a higher rating if the ending was better. Otherwise it was an enjoyable book.
I looove creepy hiking and camping thrillers. They have such a fun vibe to read about especially when out camping. This had a good beginning and I was excited to figure out the twist. It had two different time period povs. I found the ending to be a bit lackluster. I definitely expected a bit more and found it just sort of ended quickly.
Thank you netgalley for the earc in exchange for an honest review.
I don’t always get on with books that weave dual timelines as they don’t always work, but this one is great! A really tightly woven story that is captivating and thrilling. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
MA Hunter does it again 😂 A captivating psychological thriller that delves deep into the minds of its characters. Prepare to be haunted long after you finish the last page
This book was goooooooood. But the ending was surely dissapointing! The blurb, cover - everything about this book screamed a great read - and it was until the last 3 chapters! Compelling & incredibly suspenseful this book unpeeled layer after layer from a complex mystery. Including that touch of fantasy sure helped lend tgat atmospheric vibe the book had going all along. But the ending was a tad bit dissapointing given that Jess did so much to find what happened to her missing mum & get answers. I loved every character in this book & I can't stop thinking of what a fantastic vibe this book had going up until the very end - well, almost! Both parts of the book - Nora & Jess were equally thrilling & had me turning page after page! While I hoped for a different outcome, I appreciate the ending this had and still like the book a lot.
Thank you NetGalley, Boldwood Books & MA Hunter for the arc!
I live in Appalachia so I was very interested in this storyline. I enjoyed the book, it was the first I've read by this author. I'll definitely read another by them in the future.
The Trail by M A Hunter is a suspenseful story with duel timelines/POV. Nora and Jess’s stories are woven together perfectly and The Trail is a story that keeps you guessing.
Really enjoyed the suspense and pacing of this story told from two different timelines.
Thank you Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC!
I love a story that involves the disappearance of someone so I thought this might be the book for me. Unfortunately, the ending was very rushed. I enjoyed the setting though.
This one kept me on my toes. Going in I wasn’t sure if it was going to grab my attention but once it did I couldn’t put it down. Take a chance on this one and get it!
Jess, an adult residing in Brighton, grapples with a life that's far from ideal. The persistent shadow of her mother's disappearance when she was five years old looms large. Her mother, hiking the Appalachian Trail in the US for charity, went missing and is presumed dead. However, when human remains are discovered in the forest, Jess receives a message that prompts her to embark on a journey to Maine to investigate.
As Jess delves into the town and the area where her mother vanished, the plot takes on a mystical dimension. The narrative unfolds in two timelines, spanning 30 years: the present day and 1993 when Jess's mother, Nora, was on the trail. Both timelines brim with action, weaving together a captivating story of mystery and exploration.
This is a first for me by the author and one I enjoyed and I would read more of their work. The book cover is eye-catching and appealing and would spark my interest if in a bookshop. Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for this ARC.
3.5/5.
M.A Hunter really excels at turning up the tension and in this case it is ramped up to 11. When Jess was 5 years old her mother went missing during a charity hike on the US Appalachian trail. She just ran off into the forest and was never seen again. That was 30 years ago and Jess has never stopped hoping and praying for an answer to why she was acting out of character and why she would disappear when she had a husband and child waiting at home. Now she has received an anonymous letter telling her that human remains have been found just off the trail implying that they belong to Norah. In spite of having next to no money Jess impulsively boards a plane to the US to find out more.. But is she ready for what she discovers?
I loved that the author alternated the chapters between the past and present as well as between Jess and Nora. It means we get to know Nora in real time and can see what is going on in her head. I found that this adds to the tension and the anticipation of the story. As each chapter ends on a mini cliffhanger you have to read through two chapters to get an answer. I positively surged through this book and can safely say it is in the top 10 of books I have read this year.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book
This book was very good! I loved the suspense and the characters! I would definitely recommend and I’m excited to read other titles by this author!
The Trail was a great mystery to read, with Jess trying to find out what happened to her mother many years ago, then an anonymous tip-off that remains had been found, which led to Jess travelling to the Appalachian Mountains and seeking the truth.
The plot was fascinating, I don’t think I have read one like it before. I liked Jess and I felt for her and I think I was as eager as her to find out what had happened to her mother.
It was a great read!
This one took me some time to read. The setting & story wasn't really my thing. But I did finish it.
Sometimes it's best to let the past stay buried...
Thirty years ago, Jess's mother, Nora, disappeared while on a charity hike in the US. The devastating loss has afflicted Jess well into her adult life and even inspired her decision to become an investigative journalist.
So when Jess receives an anonymous tip telling her that remains have been recovered in the spot her mother disappeared, she wastes no time in jumping on a plane.
They say the Appalachian Mountains have secrets, but as she begins to ask around, she learns that the locals do too. But no matter how much they lie, she is determined to find the truth - even if it will irrevocably change her future.
Someone wants to keep the past buried. And they will stop at nothing to keep Jess as quiet as the tranquil mountain trail itself...
Jess is an adult whose life in Brighton is not in a good place. Most of her life has been shadowed by the disappearance of her mother when she was 5 . Her mother was hiking the Appalachean trail in the US for charity when she wandered off and is presumed to have been killed. When human remains are found in the forest, Jess receives a message and sets off to Maine to investigate. The plot starts to take a mystical turn once Jess is the town/area from where her mother disappoeared. The book is told in 2 timelines, 30 years apart; present day and in 1993 when Jess's mother Nora was hiking the trail. There is plenty of action in both timeperiods. I was not keen on the strange creatures in the woods aspect of this book and without giving too much away, I found the ending also required a degree of suspending belief. The book did keep me interested throughout though.

I really liked the setting for this story and found the hiking the trail parts quite interesting the storyline started out really good but as the book went on it just fell short a bit for me, I don’t think there was anything too surprising about the ending. It was a decent read just didn’t stand out.
Thanks to NetGalley for this arc.
