Firstly, I have to say how much I adore all of Jessica Redlands books, no matter which series, setting or characters; her writing always captures me. I was so excited to be back in Castle Street and loved the idea of a cat café! After this book I definitely want to visit one.
At many points it appears that Tabby may not get to open her much longed for cat café, she faces adversity from all angles – crazed ex-girlfriends, animal activists, an ex who let her down as well as a body that leaves her in so much pain she cannot function no matter how much she wishes she could. Hard to read but incredible to learn more about a condition I’d only ever heard of and didn’t realise the extent to which it can debilitate a person. Luckily for Tabby she has a wonderful community around her, family, friends and fellow business owners.
I adored hearing about the different cats, just picturing their antics adding some light relief and cute moments. Part of why I love Jessica’s books is for the sense of community that is developed; how people come together to help and support each other – always makes me wish I could join them!
There are moments of pain and sadness but it’s overwhelming a story about acceptance, perseverance, recognising that you can ask for help and that nothing needs to hold you back when following your dreams. Of course, we have romance and at first it threw me, I didn’t expect it but I soon realised the pairing was completely right.
Festive spirit, cute cats and romance; a fabulous read.
I absolutely adore books by this author. Although we are introduced to new characters, and many of the books are standalone and can easily be read individually, they really tie in together and give that cozy community feel.
I loved the idea of a cat cafe, I enjoyed reading about all the preparation and individuals that visited the cafe. But what I found really intriguing about this book, was the focus on fibromialgia, and how it explores and educates the reader.
Even though this was a real learning curve, it didn't feel like it was too much. You were able to get totally lost in the magic of christmas and the amazing characters.
I will look out for the next book, absolutely guaranteed to be brilliant!
BLOG TOUR REVIEW
Review for 'Christmas At The Cat Café' by Jessica Redland.
Read and reviewed for Jessica Redland, Redland's Readers, Boldwood Books, Book & Tonic, NetGalley and Rachel's Random Resources Tours.
Publication date 15th September 2023.
This is the first book I have read by this author although I could have sworn I'd read her books before. However I most definitely will be reading more!!
This novel consists of 54 chapters. The chapters are short in length so easy to read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!
'Christmas At The Cat Cafe' discusses some topics that may upset some readers or may not be suitable for others. I like to point this out ahead of time in my reviews so you can judge if this book is for you or not. In this book Jessica chronic pain and cruelty and the death of an animal.
This book has fantastic descriptions that set you straight in the scenes. The cover, title and synopsis suit the storyline perfectly.
Where the heck have you been hiding all my life Jessica!!! Love, LOVE, LOVED this absolutely gorgeous page turner!! An absolute must read!!!
OMG!!! I absolutely LOVED this gorgeous pageturner and I would absolutely love to see this book turned into a series to see what happens in both Tabby and Shelley's lives!! Any books that revolve around animals is a HUGE bonus for me!!! I am a MASSIVE animal lover and all my pets have been rescues to then volunteering in rescues, working in rescues and now running my own little cat rescue (Golden Oldies Cat Rescue And Hospice which you can look up on Facebook if you are interested) so this book was a huge must read for me immediately!!! I really did absolutely love this unique, stunning page turner from the first page to the very last and cannot wait to get my hands on more books by this amazing author! Jessica's excellent writing skills and evocative descriptions drops the reader straight into the middle of Tammy's life and her cat café leaving them smelling the gorgeous cakes, feeding the cat gang and so much more!! However it isn't all love and happiness and there are a few heartbreaking moments, one especially that left me in tears and I'm a hard nosed woman so definitely have the tissues at the ready!!! The fact that Jessica has done an immense amount of research into both fibromyalgia along with running a cat cafe absolutely shines through the book. A MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS Jessica!!! It is a huge bear bug for me when authors don't do any research into their topics just for their books to the be littered with mistakes that could have been easily avoided with just a little research. I absolutely loved the community feeling at Castle Street as well as the beautiful Christmas vibes. It really is the perfect book to start getting you in the festive mood as well as warming your heart and soul!!!! I was absolutely hooked throughout and could not put this down. I told myself time and time again I would just finish the chapter and then go to bed but something happened each and every time meaning I just had to read just one more, and then another until before I knew it I had completely devoured the book in one sitting. I genuinely felt like I had gone on holiday with Tabby and was devastated to come to the end of my holiday, returning back to reality and having to 'unpack my suitcase'!! I have never read a book filled with so many beautiful cats and kittens before which made it unique and just LUSH!!!!! It really is just amazing and I absolutely love it and I really cannot compliment this book enough!!! This book is just what the doctor ordered for my own stress and each page I read I could feel myself relaxing more and more!!!
This is one of those books that are very easy to read and perfect for any reading situations whether you are laying on a beach or curled up in front of a fire. It is an absolutely ideal read for anyone who is looking for a gorgeous and relaxing read that will have you hooked from beginning to end. I absolutely LOVED the realism of this storyline which made it so easy to picture everything that was going on which had been helped by Jessica's fantastic evocative writing skills. I cannot wait to get hooked into more of Jessica's books so I hope she is busy writing her next one while I get stuck into the previous books in this stunning series!! This is definitely one of those books that will turn a frown upside down and make life seem a lot brighter. It is packed with fun, laughter, animals, romance, friendships, a huge breathe of fresh air and everything you could ask for in a fantastic feel good book. Before I forget I also wanted to add that I absolutely adored the list of cat characters at the front and found it unique and helpful! If you ever need any more cat names Jessica, with over 20 rescues and having rehomed over 200 when I fostered I'm more than happy to help there!!! Grab your copy today and fall in love with Castle Street yourself!!
Well done Jessica on an absolutely stunning book that I fell in love with!!!
This may be the first book I have read by Jessica but I cannot wait to get hold of more books by this extremely talented author!!!
The characters were all an eclectic mix and each one of them were realistic and strong. I was completely invested in them all. It also makes them more realistic, believable and made me feel even more for them than I normally would. I absolutely LOVED Tabby who really resonated with me, especially with her love of animals and wanting to help them all as well as the fact that she suffers with chronic pain!!! She was like a fictional version of myself apart from she ran a cat café and I run Golden Oldies Cat Rescue And Hospice!!! It was amazing watching her look after the animals at her café as well as getting to see her personal life including her struggles with her fibromyalgia, her bond with her family, her friendships with Tom, Alison, the Castle Street community along with the amazing way she worked with her staff and some of her lovely (and not so lovely) customers as well as the many other characters and so much more!!! I loved seeing how she interacted with the cats who all had their own cheeky little personalities. Some of the other characters I loved getting to know and would love to meet again include Macey, Sarah, Harley, Cathy, Eileen, Tara and Shelley just to name a few!! I also loved meeting Babushka, Boo, Marmalade, Winnie, Sybil, Viking , Smudge, Marmite, Pebbles, Ruby, Rubix, Binky, Heathcliff, Jupiter, Freyja, Effie and Cloud among some of the other cats and kittens and would absolutely love to see most of the humans and all of the animals again and hopefully very soon!!!! There were a couple of characters that I absolutely loathed but it wouldn't be the same if you loved all the characters in a book and regardless of you loved or hated them they all worked perfectly together to make this a stunning storyline. Each of the characters and animals are memorable and unique in their own ways and they are a group that I wont be forgetting any time soon! I'm hoping to see what happens next with Tabby and Tom. Hint hint Jessica 😉.
Pick up this book and get lost in this absolutely gorgeous page turner!
Congratulations Jessica on an absolutely stunning read that I just could not put down!!! I am absolutely mind blown that I have never read any of your absolutely gorgeous books yet!! I am looking forward to reading more of your previous and future books. I would absolutely love to see this book turned into a movie!!! Welcome to my favourite author list and here's to your next success 🥂
Make sure you read to the very end of the book to read the first chapter of Jessica's 'The Start of Something Wonderful' which promises to be just as gorgeous as this book. It is one I'm definitely looking forward to reading myself!!
Overall an unputdownable, gorgeous, STUNNING page turning book filled with cats, kittens, heartbreak, cake, loss, romance, fun, laughter, friendship and so much more!! A perfectly relaxing and stunning unique read!!!!

A charming, cozy book that will keep you entertained from beginning to end. The perfect book for a rainy day in front of the fireplace, perhaps snuggled up with your cat.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for this Arc in exchange for an honest review.
This book is so good! It has wonderful characters, a great plot and a lot of cats. I loved it and highly recommend it! I received a complimentary copy from Boldwood Books via NetGalley and was not required to write a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
I know, I know, it’s only September, but it’s never too early to get in the Christmas spirit with a light romantic contemporary fiction book. I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and Boldwood books. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Tabby has her life finally figured out. Together with her boyfriend for five years and diagnosed with fibromyalgia, she’s received an inheritance which helps her with her dream of opening a cat cafe’. I’m from the United States and hadn’t heard of a cat cafe’ before, but apparently, they are a thing in Great Britain, where this book is set. The idea intrigued me and I wondered how Tabby would pull it off, especially when her boyfriend dumped her long distance about a week before the cafe’ is to open.
The other problem Tabby has is that she hasn’t been completely honest with her friends and family about her health and how debilitating her disease really is. I thought the author did a really good job at showing some of the many symptoms and underlying issues with an invisible disease; it’s easy to hide if a person chooses. But when Tabby has a flare-up of symptoms and is pretty much left incapacitated, she realizes she has to open up to others in order to get help with her cafe’ and her life.
I haven’t even mentioned the cats yet, but at the start of the story, there are 16 cats living with Tabby. Wow! We actually have local ordinances prohibiting any more than 3 cats in a residence, so this just floored me, and I’m a cat lover! There were a few cringey moments for me in the book when Tabby is feeling sorry for herself and is home alone, and gives the cats voices, talking back and forth to herself as various cats. That was a bit much for me but understand that some people do that.
There is an obvious romance for Tabby with an old family friend, but first she needs time to move on from her 5-year relationship, so I’m glad the author didn’t throw the two together right away. And despite this book having Christmas in the title, the holiday season doesn’t come up until much later in the book.
I’m glad to have read this book as I learned a lot about fibromyalgia, and now I have another reason to visit England: cat cafe’s!
This one was a bit difficult to engage with. There was just something about the narrative voice that didn’t click for me. Part of it is that, as “Tabitha” (aka, the writer) explains fibromyalgia, it reads very much like a women’s health website.
As a character, Tabitha is…fine. She spends a lot of time trying to spare everyone else from worrying about her, and watching her learn to accept help is definitely a strong point. Her development of the cat café is pretty cute; the way she talks for her cats, each with its distinctive voice and accent, is somewhat less so—but at least she only does that in private.
Tom is maybe a bit too good to be true, but he’s solid as the love interest. The villain, however…oof. Quite cartoony. Finding out who is behind attacks on the café is a little bit of a surprise; there wasn’t really anything to telegraph it.
Side characters are good, particularly some of the café staff and regulars. Tabby does manage to overcome several adversities quite well. The best thing, though, is that she shows enough growth to be aware of when something isn’t right for her.
As with any romance—Hallmark or otherwise—something must drive our love interests apart about ¾ of the way through. In this case, it makes sense, as does their resolution.
Possible Objectionable Material:
Tabitha has been living, unmarried, with her boyfriend for several years. Some drinking. Mild swearing. Death of a pet.
Who Might Like This Book:
While it does have Christmas in it, it isn’t all about the holiday. If you like cats or have ever wanted to visit a cat café, you’ll probably quite enjoy this book. And of course, if you like “clean” romance, this is for you.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

The latest in the Castle Street series. Tabby has dreamed of owning her own cat cafe for years. With a legacy from her grandmother, she is finally in a position to make that dream come true. Tabby has been renovating the cafe over the past few months, waiting for her boyfriend to come home after a catering gig on a luxury cruise ship. But the night before he is due back, he rings to say he isn’t coming back and their relationship is over. Follow Tabby as she faces obstacles on the way to realising the dream. With the help of family and friends, will the Whitsborough Bay Cat Cafe be a success and will Tabby find lasting happiness for herself and her 16 cats? An enjoyable if predictable novel. Although it is the latest in the Castle Street series, it can be read as a stand alone story without any problems.
Nice
Tabby has loved cats most of her life, and now has 18. She is in the process of fulfilling her dream of a career working with cats, by opening a cat cafe in her small town. But the partner she planned to open it with dumped her long distance, and her fibromyalgia will make it difficult to do alone.
I felt compassion and empathy for Tabby’s suffering, and once she opened up to her family and friends, their unwavering support. I did find her character a bit immature, though and just couldn’t completely embrace her. The story felt a bit predictable but was still entertaining. Not too heavy on the holiday theme, either.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
Cats and Christmas are two of my favourite things so I was excited to read this book. I have also been to Cat Café before and really enjoyed it.
I really liked Tabby and I felt for her being left to deal with everything by her ex and struggling to come to terms with the diagnosis of her health issues.
Tom was adorable I loved how he stepped up to help Tabby out when things were clearly getting too much for her. Let’s not forget about all the cats, they all seemed like such characters. I loved the descriptions at the beginning with their names and a bit about each cat/kitten!
This was my first read by this author and I’d definitely read another. I hope there will be a sequel to this one too. I’d love to know more about Tabby and what happened next.
Thank you to Rachel’s Random Resources and the publisher for having me on the tour and for my gifted ebook.
It's no secret that Jessica Redland is one of my favorite authors. I was super excited about her new book despite the fact that I don't trust cats and I am definitely a dog person, not a cat person. Although there really are a lot of cats in this book I absolutely loved the story. The way Jessica writes gets me completely invested in the lives of the characters, smiling along with them and crying when things go wrong or are unfair.
Tabby was easy to love and so was her family. They were all so supportive, especially when she came clean about how serious her chronic illness really was. The less that is said about Leon, the better... but Tom.... wow! We should all be so lucky to have a Tom in our lives! He was one in a million and the bond he and Tabby shared was envy worthy!
This really was a wonderful and uplifting story set at Christmas time in Castle Street. Some of the other business owners on Castle Street make appearances, but you do not need to have read their stories to get the most out of this one. If you want a Christmas story with lots of feels and baking, read this one!
3 Stars
One Liner: Nice, but that’s it
Tabby is an ailurophile (cat lover). She has always wanted to own a cat café to combine her love for cats and baking. The inheritance from her Nanna makes her dream come true. However, days before the opening, Tabby’s boyfriend Leon decides he’s not up for it and breaks off. Tabby is heartbroken but knows she can’t let him shatter her dreams.
However, with her medical condition (still a secret from her family) and business hurdles, it will take a Christmas miracle to save her business from loss even before it has opened. Also, someone out there could be sabotaging her café.
The story comes in Tabby’s first-person POV.
What I Like:
The setting is beautiful, be it the small town with friendly business owners or the interiors of the cat café with murals. It’s easy to visualize most of it.
The book has fifteen cats! Each has a name and is described (color, breed, etc.). I didn’t note it all, but I’m sure it would have been a fun exercise. They have distinct personalities, too. I have a friend with around 18+ cats (adopted strays), so I thought of her immediately.
Tabby’s family is wonderful (even if her brother annoyed me at one point). They are supportive, caring, and ready to step in and help whenever necessary. Tom is a sweetheart, of course. I wouldn’t have minded if he had more depth. It would have helped his arc more.
Tabby has fibromyalgia, a chronic medical condition that causes varying degrees of body pains, fatigue, and brain fog. I love how this aspect is seamlessly incorporated into the plot. While it may seem a little excessive, it is not. This condition is life-altering and can affect a person (and their family) any day. So, every day they wake up pain-free is a win. It makes sense to include this (especially since the book is in the first person). I learned a lot about fibromyalgia and how to handle it positively, which is a definite plus.
The traffic lights and spoon theory used to measure her pain/ fatigue levels is a great addition. I really liked this concept.
There’s HEA and an epilogue, so another yay!
What Could Have Been Better for Me:
With Christmas in the title, I expected it to have a bigger role in the book. However, the story starts in November. We get to the first week of December in the last quarter. Not much of Christmas in this one, except for the Spirit part, which, TBH, can be used any time of the year. People helping others isn’t seasonal.
The cover makes the book appear to be a warm and cozy romance. However, romance is secondary and not so well done. While it does have warm moments, the love/ romance angle doesn’t hit the mark.
Despite the first-person narration, I couldn’t see Tabby in love with the guy. But I could see his love for her almost from the beginning. It works to an extent as the FMC is in another relationship at the beginning, gets dumped, and has to recover. Even then, when the shift happens, it doesn’t seem convincing from her side but is spot on from his side. Go figure!
The narration is long-winded and slow. It drones on in some places, and there’s quite a bit of repetition. Moreover, I’m not that into dubbing for cats (or animals) and having a two-way conversation with myself. I do talk to animals and non-living objects, but I don’t put words into their mouth and make them talk back to me in different voices. This is a little weird.
I could spot the culprit for sabotage right away. Not an issue since this is not a mystery. It was supposed to be obvious. However, that track didn’t have to be so long. No need to give so much importance to a fourth-party character, even if there’s a sort of lesson in there.
Reading the author’s note was enlightening and informative. I didn’t like a certain plot development and wondered about the reason behind it.
The notes say the author wanted to write about a character with fibromyalgia (a great choice) and a cat café (another good choice), so she decided to combine both. At the same time, she wanted to set it in Castle Street (an existing series) but also write about cat rescue and adoption shelters. She combined it all to create this plot, which falls flat towards the end.
To summarize, Christmas at the Cat Café is nice enough but didn’t charm me as I hoped it would. It’s a one-time read and might be better suited for the series/ author’s fans.
Thank you, NetGalley and Boldwood Books, for the eARC. This review is voluntary and contains my honest opinion about the book.
At one level this book is the engaging story of Tabby’s efforts to open a cat café on lovely Castle Street – using an inheritance from her grandmother, despite being let down by boyfriend Leon, finding unexpected opposition but also warm support from the community and the closest of friends, moving on to the need to make some difficult choices about her future. There are, of course, lots of cats – every one of them an individual, beautifully drawn – and I loved both Tabby herself and her passion for her project and her desire to share it with others.
But she also has a particular challenge with the unpredictability of fibromyalgia – a life-limiting condition that I previously knew shamefully little about, and I learned so much about its impact and the strategies to cope with its management. And perhaps the most important of those strategies becomes allowing others to be aware of how difficult living with pain can be, letting friends and family see her at her worst, and allowing them to step in and provide the most wonderful support.
The warmth of friends, family and community is something the author always does so very well – and never better than in this lovely book. The support she becomes able to draw on frequently brought a tear to my eye – I’m not the only person who loved Tabby, and the special people around her filled my heart with joy. There’s a particular focus too on following your dreams – and whether it’s sometimes ok to accept that the future might not be quite what you imagine or want it to be, and that’s a side to the story that’s handled with all the emotional sensitivity the author always brings to her stories.
The balance in this book is quite perfect – the delightful environment (so beautifully described) that Tabby creates, the day-to-day triumphs, but also the many setbacks along the way and their emotional impact. I can’t speak highly enough about the way Tabby’s health challenges are handled – never too heavy, but detailed enough to build a real understanding of her condition. And I so loved being back in Castle Street in time for the really special switch-on of those Christmas lights – with cameo appearances throughout from familiar and previously loved characters, but it really wouldn’t matter at all if this was your first and only visit.
For so many reasons, I think this was my favourite book yet from this really special writer – she just gets everything absolutely right, drawing it all together with the most perfect ending, and I couldn’t recommend it more strongly. Just perfect – and one of my books of the year.
Really lovely read, especially if you’re a cat lover. Liked all the characters and how the story was told. Would recommend this book
The biggest compliment I can give this author is how incredibly spot on she got living with an illness that isn’t going to go away. As someone who is also fiercely independent like Tabby, the struggle in asking for help, hiding the whole truth and the guilt was and is something I do regularly. Or should I call a spade a spade and use the term stubborn too? While mine is unfortunately progressive and rare, compared to Tabby’s fibromyalgia (even most doctors haven’t heard of mine) the feelings of loss to a life dreamed are the same. So even though I did wonder if I really wanted to read something I live everyday, I’m glad I did.
The second biggest is I love cats so of course I was going to love a book about a cafe full of them. My little terror Percy Mayhem would be the one found swinging from the bunting or attacking feet under the tables due to his bizarre foot fetish.
As much as those things were big parts of the story, this was also so much more. It is a story of family in all its nuances, of community showing up for each other and two people who just want to be loved for all that they are.
Tabby was such a lovely character and Leon was a cowardly fool for leaving her just when she needed him the most. But as the frog hops off to the water along comes a prince. The path to true love never runs smoothly though and this little cobbled street will have its fair share of bumps….
A thoughtful, well considered and carefully researched book full of heart and little fluffy wonders.
This book was my first by Jessica Redland and by 25% in I knew she is going to be an autobuy author for me! I LOVED LOVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS BOOK
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC
I enjoyed my visit back to Castle Street and was excited to visit the Cat Café! The concept completely intrigued me as I loved walking by the one in Scarborough, peeking in at the cats relaxing in the window display there, and I was interested to discover exactly what was involved with running such an establishment.
It was so interesting to watch Tabby overcome all the obstacles and to manage (against all odds) to fulfill her dream. Once again Jessica gave us a wonderful caring community to support her, a new trader, and a sprinkling of mystery too.
You could tell that a huge amount of research went into this story, for Tabby’s illness and for the creating and running of a cat café.
Some sad and difficult moments were counterbalanced by some uplifting moments, and overall you just felt the love blossoming throughout the story both human and cat.
As always, lots of things going on that kept you on your toes, and the desire to find out what was going to happen next kept me turning the pages avidly.
A fabulous feline festive story that was filled with emotional moments and determination to carry on and achieve a dream, despite some very significant setbacks and occasional self doubt. An honest story featuring characters who you believe in. And a ton of adorable cat characters to fall in love with too! A gorgeous book!
This is the ideal book for cat lovers to read this Christmas season! Not everyone in Whitsborough Bay is thrilled with the idea of a cat café, but Tabby is determined to open hers by Christmas, even if she has to do it on her own after her boyfriend leaves her in the lurch. Tabby faces more than resistance to her cat café as she is also dealing with health issues.
I absolutely adore Jessica's books so was really looking forward to this one. I certainly wasn't disappointed.
I loved Tabby from the moment we met her. She came across as so kind, caring and independent despite her health issues. When we find out she is coping with fibromyalgia, I felt the depth of research certainly came through. The descriptions of her pain traffic light system and the spoon theory will resonate with many. I certainly understand the fatigue!
I thought the whole cast of characters were great with the exception of one. Tom was so lovely and I hoped things would work out for him. It was great how they all pulled together to help Tabby with the setbacks she encountered.
I liked the list of cats at the beginning of the book and enjoyed reading about their antics. I was also interested in seeing how a Cat Cafe was set up as I've never visited one.
I finished this in 2 sittings and is one I would highly recommend.
Thank you Rachels Random Resources, Boldwood Books and Netgalley for my gifted copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Another winner from this author, I have loved all of her books and it is great to be back in Castle Street. As always a beautiful heartwarming story that you can't put down but also dealing with a serious matter highlighting the problems faced by people with fibromyalgia. A perfect Christmas read especially if you love cats
