This was a short fairly easy read. The premise was typical political fantasy but this one had a unique style. There wasn't a lot of set up and things seemed a bit disjointed. There also seemed to be pieces left out. It was fast paced to the point of almost being rushed. I feel like some parts could have been fleshed out a little more. I enjoyed the characters and many of the story elements. It felt kind of King Arthur meets Back to the Future part 3. Medieval meets the wild west with some steampunk and fantastical creatures thrown in. Over all it was a good story with potential.

The Baker's Son by Bert Cala.
The Dough Also Rises.
A young man wants more than what the family bakery has to offer. He wants high adventure. He wants to be a knight, but with a leviathan rampaging nearby he and his friends get into more combat than he had ever planned on.
A slow but good read. Likeable story and characters. 3*.

This whimsical tale draws inspiration from the biblical David vs. Goliath encounter, but with a twist that adds layers of comedy and steampunk aesthetics. As a young man yearns for more than his family's bakery can offer, he sets his sights on knighthood, only to find himself entangled in a series of uproarious misadventures. With a leviathan wreaking havoc nearby and unexpected chupacabra encounters, the story delivers unexpected and hilarious twists. This tale will tickle readers' funny bones while keeping them on the edge of their seats with combat, chaos, and a dash of whimsy.

Hey, fellow adventure seekers! Ready for a wild ride that's part fairytale, part steampunk, and all kinds of hilarious? Meet the hero The Baker's Son - a guy who's tired of kneading dough and dreams of being a knight. But life's no cakewalk when you're faced with leviathans and chupacabras, especially when you're more used to flour fights than real combat. This book's like David vs. Goliath, but with sea monsters and bake-offs thrown into the mix!

I couldn't stop grinning while reading this one. It's like the perfect blend of fantasy and comedy, and the characters? Oh boy, they're as quirky as they come. From battling leviathans to baking disasters, this story's got surprises around every corner.
