Entertaining but not super gripping. Average story. I did finish and it was good. The narration was good. Story a little unbelievable given one of the characters is a police chief.
Another twisty little ride from Emily and boy was the ending of this just messed up!
From the off, you know there is something not right. You know this story is not going to be as clear-cut as you believe.
A very small cast of characters, Lola we only meet through diary entries. Evan, head honcho with an air of mystery and threat. Ariel poking her nose where she shouldn’t be and Jessica.....
I did figure out the twist, but the twist after the twist I didn’t expect! It was dark and chilling!!!
I listened to some of this book and it has dual narrators. I loved the female narrator but the male narrator was difficult for me to pay attention to, so I read the last 60% and I couldn’t put the book down!!!
I adore Emily’s writing and she had me on the edge of my seat-belted seat! I couldn’t take my eyes off the pages and blazed through. I need to see the final showdown and see what Emily had in store for me!!
Shocking!
WOWZA! This book was twisted, jaw dropping, shocking, and thrilling! The Wife in the Photo was gripping from the very beginning and never lost its steam. Emily Shiner has outdone herself with this twist filled, page turner!
In the beginning of this book, Lola has died, and her husband Evan and her daughter Jessica are fending for themselves. They could use a little help around the house as Evan is in over his head between work and raising his teenage daughter. Luckily his assistant recommends Ariel, a woman she met at church. Ariel happily accepts the job and gets to work! She has a lot of cleaning to do but that is not all! She has her own reasons for accepting the job, she knows the house hides secrets and once revealed she will be able to prove who killed Lola!
What a thrilling ride. This book had me on the edge of my seat. The diary entries are a very nice touch and I was intrigued while learning what they contained. There is a nice amount of tension in this book which I absolutely love. While reading mysteries, I always try to do my own super sleuthing trying to figure out whodunit. Hats off to Emily Shiner as I did not see that reveal coming! After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I gave a silent applause to Shiner for pulling off the shocking reveal.
I did not want to put this book down. I had both the book and audiobook which made for a fully enjoyable reading experience. The narration of the audiobook was fantastic!
Gripping, shocking, well written, well thought out and perfectly paced! I can’t wait to read what Emily Shiner writes next!
Overall, a little predictable. With that being said I enjoyed the multiple perspectives and watching the development of the story. Jessica was portrayed in such a chilling way. Watching her calculating moves with her father and Ariel felt like really great story telling. There were still a few surprises.
Even though the overall plot was fairly easy to figure out from the beginning, it was a pretty good thriller and I really enjoyed seeing the story unfold.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I would like to thank Netgalley, Bookouture Audio and Emily Shiner for allowing me to listen to this book in exchange for an honest review prior to it's release. This book follows a father and daughter after the death of wife/mother. To help them during this difficult time, the father hires a housekeeper but who is this housekeeper? This book had a lot of twists and turns, and I literally trusted no one! Definitely ended differently than I expected but I don't hate it. I also loved the three POV's and different voices for the audiobook. It was enjoyable to listen to because of it. This is my first book by this author and I really enjoy her writing style. It kept my attention the entire time. I will definitely read more by this author. (Review added to Goodreads)
The wife in the photo, I really enjoyed the multiple points of view and the premise of the book but unfortunately there were several plot holes, some of the characters frustrated me and I guessed the major twist. It was a clever idea to use different narrators for the audio book but the male one sounded a bit like an AI version of Matthew McConaughey!
Wow what a ride! This novel had me hooked from the first chapter. Evan and Jessica have to deal with Lola’s death after she accidentally falls down the stairs. They need help, that’s when Ariel comes into the picture. Ariel helps cook and clean but she also has an alternative motive. She wants to be close to Jessica and protect her from Evan. Ariel thinks that Evan killed his wife and she’s determined to find the proof.
This book has different POV’s from 4 characters. The narrators did a wonderful job!
All I can say is this book caught me by surprise. I might have guessed some things that happened but the rest was completely unexpected. I love when an ending takes you by surprise and it’s not the typical ending you are used to reading.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for an ARC audiobook of “The Wife in the Photo.” This is one I will be recommending to my friends.
Wow! This books was great! There was literally a couple times where I rewound the audiobook so I could listen again. I thought perhaps I had missed something, but nope, just plot twists! This was written in a way that was different from most psychological thrillers, which I found intriguing and enjoyable! As with any good psychological-thriller, you think you think you know, but you’re not SURE you know….I definitely recommend this book especially if you are a fan of Freida McFadden, Ruth Ware, and Lisa Jewell.
Also, I thoroughly enjoyed both narrators, but especially the female. I believe this is the first audiobook I finished with her narrating. Finding someone you enjoy listening to really makes all the difference!
I would like to thank NetGalley, Emily Shiner, and Bookoutoure for an advanced copy of this audiobook. I was not paid or required to post this review, I did it of my own free will.
While I was hoping to be wrong, I was able to easily guess the major twist in this book based on the behavior of the characters. While there were smaller turns I didn't see coming, since what I was expecting to happen came true it was a bit more difficult to be invested.
Everyone in this book is a liar and you cannot trust any of the characters, which also makes it difficult for the reader to care what happens to them. The characters also repeat themselves a lot unnecessarily, which was irksome. Perhaps this is just the jaded opinion of a long-term thriller reader, but the book was predictable to me.
Thank you to NetGalley and the author of my advance copy of this audiobook
I am always up for a thriller, especially if there are suspenseful parts. This one had several that had me not wanting to pause the book when I needed to. I listened to this quickly within a few days.
When I finished the book I was still wondering about the title, I never really understood the correlation to the story. I did guess a few of the twists, but there were others that took me by surprise. ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 stars for The Wife in the Photo.
Mmmmm what can I say but an etremely weak plot. I knew who it was by page 25!
Didn't like the chracter and the twists were not good enough, I do not usually guess everything but I did here
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC copy of this
A perfect psychological thriller. The premise begins with a hardworking father Evan who is a high ranking Police officer who tried to do his best caring for his teenage daughter Jessica after they had both suffered a terrible tragedy involving his wife/her mother, passing away after a fall downstairs. From here on in, the plot thickens. The twists and turns in this book were constant I just couldn't stop listening. I was shocked at the truth of the first murder, I didn't see that one coming at all! It was pure brilliance!
The narrators were fantastic too. Good narrators, amazing storyline, unputdownable!
This audiobook was wow wow wow! From start to finish.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookcouture for an advanced Audio copy in return for an honest review.
Fantastic read. Some minor things stood out that didn't seem logical. Like the chief of police running fingerprints through the database for personal use and that is a secret? Also, I was certain Ariel told Mariam who she was in the beginning but later it is also a secret. This does not take away from the book though. You know what's happening all along but it's still interesting to read different angles as the situation plays out.
Lola Warner dies tragically in her own home, but someone knows she was murdered and they know who did it. Ariel joins the family home as a housekeeper, taking care of Lola's widow, Evan, and their young daughter, Jessica. But they ALL have secrets that they are keeping from each other, and some of them are deadly.
I enjoyed this audiobook, the narrator was good and kept me interested.
The book was interspersed with diary entries as well as flitting between different characters narrations. I liked this as it gave me a chance to get to know each character better, understanding how they felt and learning about their flaws.
I'm not too sure on the name of the book though as I hadn't even realised that there was a 'wife in a photo' mentioned until I read the blurb!
Overall, it was a good book with a solid story and plenty of twists and turns.
My thanks to NetGalley and the Publishers for sending me this ARC in return for an honest review.
"The Wife in the Photo" by Emily Shiner is an absolute gem that deserves all five stars! From the moment I delved into the audiobook, I was captivated by the skilled narrators who brought distinct emotions and authenticity to each character's point of view. The weaving of perspectives truly enriched the experience.
As for the story itself, I was utterly engrossed from start to finish. The mystery had me constantly guessing, and I was delightfully blindsided by the unexpected revelation. The characters were brilliantly crafted, making it easy to form both strong affinities and disdain for them. This gripping narrative is one I can't help but wholeheartedly recommend to everyone. If you're a fan of psychological thrillers that keep you up at night, this is an absolute must-read!
Thank you to NetGalley for the audiobook ARC of The Wife in the Photo.
The Wife in the Photo is a gripping psychological thriller that has small twists and turns the whole way through which keep you hooked until the very end.
I personally figured out the biggest twist but that did not take away from the story as the ins and outs of the twist still shocked me so much that I had to keep on listening to know more. The characters in this book are so well developed and more and more were uncovered about each character the further you got into the book.
Emily Shiner's writing was so easy to follow. I can find myself getting quite confused with audiobooks often as I get distracted easily but something about the way Emily wrote the story meant that it didn't require too much of my attention and I was able to follow the book very easily from the start to the end.
** possible spoiler **
My biggest critique of The Wife in the Photo is that the title doesn't really match the contents of the book - I kept expecting there to be a huge twist in the story relating to something to do with a photo but this never happened so I do wish the title was something different.
The Wife in the Photo was a solid psychological thriller that will keep you guessing. The plot revolves around the “accidental” death of Lola, the mother of a teenage girl and the wife to a police officer. They hire on a housekeeper to help them through these tough times and we learn a lot more about the secrets this family is keeping. The story is told from multiple points of views and slowly unfolds the truth. The author keeps you guessing through the use of unreliable narrators & makes you question everyone’s real intentions. You may think you have it all figured out but there are some unexpected plot twists that make it all worth it.
I thought it was good but rushed towards the end. Everything was happening so fast and then it ended. I would have liked the ending for the main characters to have gone longer.
Evan, the least observant and/or competent police officer in town who somehow got promoted to chief, just lost his wife Lola. He and his daughter Jessica are grieving and the house is in disarray.
Friend of the family. Miriam, is quick to help. She recommends Ariel, a lady she knows from church who can keep the house up and take care of them. Evan doesn't want her to move in but he enjoys the work she does during the day and she hits it off with Jessica. That should be a good thing but Evan and Jessica share secrets and he's afraid of someone getting too close and weaseling them out of Jessica.
He's right to be concerned because Ariel is not a stranger. She is to them but they are not to her. What is her reasoning for coming here and how is she connected?
This starts off by throwing you right into the good stuff which I appreciated and it remained interesting, with dual narration between Ariel and Evan, with diary entries of others sprinkled in. We get reveals slowly throughout and that's good. I did guess early on what was going to happen and I hoped I was wrong but I came to terms with it until the climax of the story and it just went off the rails completely. I couldn't believe what I was hearing.
There were silly parts but it was good and is a popcorn thriller not great American literature so it is was enjoyable and I would recommend. Beware of the twist scene though and don't have any water in your mouth to choke on.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read and review. The audiobook narration was great.
This story is told from multiple perspectives:
Evan- Husband and Father
Lola's Diary- Mother and Deceased
Ariel- Evan's House Keeper
Jessica's Diary- Evan and Lola's Daughter.
Having the multiple view points gives you lots of clues to figure out the mystery. This was a slow burn book and didn't pick up pace until the last 20 percent of the book. The story is told after Lola passes away. Ariel is looking to prove that someone murdered Lola, even though her death was considered an accident. Evan turns to drinking and then goes back to work. Jessica is upset and with drawn, slowing building a relationship with the house keeper. What secrets will come out? What will Ariel discover? What happens next?
I listened to the audio version of the book. There were multiple narrators to help distinguish whose perspective it is. The one narrator was difficult to listen to as he sounded a bit robotic. This book had a few plot twists, that felt predictable. Many bits of details were repeated throughout the book, unnecessarily. As a seasoned thriller/mystery reader, this was not a favorite of mine. I did enjoy the multiple view points!
