This is a me issue and not a book issue but I couldn't handle the man's voice. He is supposed to be a jerk so they found the right narrator for this but I was like "ugh!"
I spend my life surrounded by women so men's voices already give me anxiety but this guy really took it up a notch.
The female narrators were perfect.
The story was twisty and interesting. I love stories where people infiltrate a household by taking on a domestic job.
This is a tale told through the eyes of multiple unreliable witnesses. Jessica is dead. She fell down the stairs. That is the only fact we can be certain of. Ariel turns amateur sleuth to try to prove that the husband, Evan, pushed her. Evan’s narrative tells a different story. And then there’s Jessica. Is she an abused child, a troubled, grieving teen, or a manipulative, thieving liar. The only other thing that’s for certain is that no one in this book is on friendly terms with the truth. The end is twist upon twist with the final chapter leaving you completely slack jawed. Read it.
This book was an easy audio listen and I couldn't stop once I started. The readers did an excellent job. This book is shared from several perspectives (Lola, Ariel, Jessica and Evan) and also diary entries.
For 90% I was thinking I knew what was going on and then woah! That got totally disturbing and I was stunned lol. Nothing is as you think it will be and everything is a lie. Who is really who and what are they doing. It definitely had my on the edge of my seat and the only complaint I have is that it didn't really have much of a resolve at the end. I was left kind of like "what just happened".....felt like it needed another chapter to conclude better. So many unanswered questions. Maybe that is for the better.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley and the author Emily Shiner for the advanced copy for an honest review.
3.5 🌟
Things I liked:
Easy to read
Short chapters
Narration
Continuous mystery
Multiple POVs
Things I didn’t liked:
Repetition
The “ending twist” - it was out of character (the story could have ended very well!)
Loose ends
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Amazing book. I read the written version as well. The surprises and twists and turns were insane. I was baffled by this audiobook. So many surprises revealed throughout. The ending was quite something.
Female narrator was great but the male narrator was horrible. Almost sounded like a robot. That would be my only dislike of this audiobook :the male narrator.
This book definitely has Gone Girl vibes! I enjoyed this audiobook- it was suspenseful and entertaining!
Oh dear god.. this was NOT good. I’m not even going to post it on goodreads because I’m more worries it’s more me than it is the author. I just couldnt stand the writing. The phrase “I remembered why I was here” or “i remembered just then what I was here for and…” one more time i would have lost my MIND. All the characters POV’s sounded exactly the same.. the MMC sounded like a total jerk, and the journal entries from the wife were just… not believable. They read like something a teenager would write. The twists were soooo out of bounds and random and I have no idea how it could have even plausibly happened. I only didnt DNF it because I wanted to give the author the benefit of the doubt but I honestly was cringing by the time I finished the book.
Also, as others have pointed out, the title of the book makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
The Wife in the Photo is one of those books that puts me in my place. I am a reader, not an author, but sometimes my head gets so big when I ABSOLUTELY know the ending early in the book. In this case, I literally took a screen shot of the audio app at around 36% when Little Miss Smarty Pants (me, lol) predicted the ending. At 100% done I whispered an apology to Emily Shiner for being so wrong. There is no timeline in which I could have guessed the ending to this one. I loved it. I loved the characters. The audio had multiple narrators which were perfect in presenting the characters with no effort for my brain to follow. The twists? Chef's kiss.
Multiple POVs, past, present, person of power in the form of a cop, heroine housekeeper, sullen teen - I was here for all of it. My only warning is if you require immediate action, be warned. This one was a slow burn where the first quarter of the book laid the foundation for a wild, unexpected ride. Just be patient.
Listening to this captivating mystery was a spellbinding experience. The masterful integration of multiple perspectives seamlessly drew me into the story's enigmatic world.
The intricate tapestry of secrets and unforeseen turns kept me engaged, igniting a burning curiosity to decipher the unfolding events. Each character's well-guarded truths and concealed intentions added layers of complexity, intensifying the suspense.
When the ultimate truth was unveiled, it defied all my initial conjectures, leaving me in awe of the storytelling prowess. This auditory journey through the labyrinth of mysteries was an enthralling adventure that I thoroughly relished.
Thank you Bookouture, NetGalley, Emily Shiner, and narrators Todd Kramer and Emily Handford for a great listening experience of the audio ARC of The Wife in the Photo. This is a tightly controlled domestic suspense thriller about a family that recently has lost the wife/mother in the home in a somewhat suspicious death. Her husband is the chief of police so of course most people don’t look too close but there are a few that want some answers. For example, the new housekeeper is very curious and by the way she has some deep secrets of her own that are linked to the family. Definitely worth staying up late to read. You will be surprised at the ending! I didn’t even guess the final twist and I was amazed at how it played out in the end.
Thank you NetGalley for this audiobook in exchange for my honest review. The story kept me wanting know more. The audio was nice to listen to with the different characters. I loved all of the twists. I recommend!
