Old bones are unearthed in the Cornish countryside close to Penzance. Detective Lauren Pengelly is frustrated as it scuppers her plans for some time off.

DS Matt Price arrives on the scene, not realising that the lycra clad woman at the crime scene is his new boss; however, once established who Lauren is, the two manage to work well together.

Alongside the discovery of the bones, a young girl has gone missing from a local nursery. There is a worrying lack of evidence and Lauren initially suspects the girl's estranged father may be responsible.

Then a second girl goes missing in almost identical circumstances.

There is a connection between the two cases, but will Lauren and Matt uncover the truth in time to find the missing girls?

I found this an enjoyable read and it helped to know the local area in which the story is based. Lauren and Matt were believable characters and I look forward to seeing how their relationship develops.

I received a free digital ARC of this book via Storm Publishing, and am leaving this review voluntarily.

Book 1 in the Cornwall Murder Mystery series. This was one of those books where I found myself rolling my eyes several times in this book ! The story starts with old bones being found that were 20 years old, as the investigation starts on this , a young girl is taken from a nursery. With a team of 5 detectives they begin to investigate the disappearance only for the DI and DS to go looking into what happened with the bones !! With more children going missing including the new DS daughter, he’s allowed to stay on the case and interview the suspect!

The Lost Girls of Penzance by Sally Rigby is the first in a new series set in Cornwall and covering old bones found in a deserted cottage and a new case of missing girls from their nursery schools. The team of detectives that DI Lauren Pengally has to work with is very believable as they all struggle to get along and get their job done. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Sally Rigby does it AGAIN!

A new series knows as “A Cornwall Murder Mystery” kicks off with this first book.

Detective Lauren Pengelly has been part of the Penzance police force for less than two years and murder is not a common occurrence. But when a set of bones are uncovered and tiny toddlers go missing, Pengelly seemingly has more on her hands than ever before.

On top of that, Detective Matt Price, her newly arrived second-in-command, must learn the way things are done in this sleepy town.

My heart was racing from the moment the first girl was kidnapped and didn’t settle until the very end. I LOVE Sally Rigby and she did not disappoint me with this first book of the series.

Thank you to NetGalley & Storm Publishing for my ARC!

Majestic cliffs, beautiful beaches and quaint houses - prepared to be entertained in a new thriller series, set in the small town of Penzance in Cornwall, by Author Sally Rigby. This sleepy little town which hardly ever sees any serious crime, wakes up to the discovery of human bones in the garden of an abandoned cottage and Detective Inspector Lauren Pengelly makes herself available to lead the investigation inspite of being on the verge of taking vacation time.

She had taken a position at this small town only because of her ambitions to become the Chief before her 40th birthday and hence has always been on the heels of her team with ruthless demands of excellence and dedication in their work. Having never seen a murder in their town, the team is understandably excited about the discovery of bones. The same is not true for Sergeant Detective Matt Price; he has transferred from a much bigger force to this small town due to certain personal problems. Starting off slightly at a wrong foot, Lauren and Matt settle into a working relationship, as they begin their investigation into the recent discovery.

Just as that investigation is started, the team is called into investigate the disappearance of a 4 year girl from a small nursery. With time against them, the team leave no stone unturned in finding the little girl; they even suspect the girl's father might be involved in the kidnapping. But when another girl goes missing in another nursery, the team is both confounded and confused.

Who is the one who is kidnapping the girls? What is the identity of the remain found? Was the person murdered?

Rigby takes the reader through an interesting and fast-paced story of a bizzare culprit with an unusual motive. The dynamics between the team and DI Pengelly and the changes that are brought on by the presence of the new member Price made for an interesting background. The author has established a solid base which can form a solid base for the series and the story does have a good potential for making a great series.

The story was very entertaining and novel till about the first half; but later on it was fairly predictable. I could guess just about every other twist Rigby was leading towards, except for the identity of the culprit. And so I didn't feel very invested in the investigation. However, the characters of Lauren and Price are quite distinctive and I am definitely interested in knowing where these characters are going to be further along.

I enjoyed this start of a new crime thriller series. A bit slow at the beginning even if it kept me hooked and guessing.
The characters are fleshed out and the setting is atmospheric
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine

Eh, not my favorite new series by far. Didn't really care for the characters and found them to be a bit...immature? Also found the ending wrapped things up a little too nicely.

P.S. Thanks to #netgalley for the ARC.

DI Lauren Pengelly didn't particularly want to go on leave. Working her way up the promotion ladder was her focus. Just as she was about to set off on a long distance cycle trip news came in that human bones had been found. Of course she went back to work! Her new second in command DS Matt Price has just arrived having transferred from the Midlands after his wife's death so he can get help with childcare for his two year old daughter. They were getting information about the bones when a more serious case came in. A little girl has gone missing from a local nursery. Security seems quite tight. Pengelly suspects Isla's father who has restrictive access to his daughter.

This is the start of a new series & having enjoyed Sally Rigby's previous books I had high hopes & was not disappointed. I can't say I warmed to Pengelly, called The Ice Queen by her team behind her back- although she seemed to thaw a bit as the story went on. I did guess 'whodunnit' although I wasn't sure how! I'm already looking forward to the next one. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

This is the first installment of a solid police procedural featuring a hardcore, play by my rules, Detective Inspector named Lauren Pengelly. She is about to take off on a bicycling holiday when she catches not one but two cases in the quiet, parochial town of Penzance, Cornwall. With a new DS starting with her force it quickly becomes apparent that her vacation is not happening. It was well contrived that this new DS is the officer who is initially going to prevent Pengelly from gaining access to the first crime scene. He thinks she is a pushy interloper and she is definitely going to have a word with his superior officer. And we are off - the cold case is quickly overshadowed by the abduction of a young girl from a daycare facility and another and another. With skin in the game the new Detective Sergeant, Matt Price, shares equal time in the story with Pengelly - his backstory is explained with sufficient detail that that you know he is going to be a major player. Their personalities and the point of Pengelly wanting to move to a territory that is less bucolic with more action and the counterpoint of Price coming from a larger territory with that action needing to find a quieter and less stressful environment works well. He is forever inadvertently saying the wrong thing and she is doing a slow simmer.

Good story, well written, with enough clues and twists that held my attention. I look forward to the next installment because surely Pengelly and Price have a longer road to walk. Many thanks to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for a copy.

Be Prepared to Be Hooked with This Murder Mystery.

The Lost Girls of Penzance by Sally Rigby is the story of Detective Lauren Pengelly and DS Matt Price who has just started in his new job after he moves to Penzance with his little girl two months after his wife is killed in a car accident.
Penzance police force discover the bones of a woman which have been found behind a derelict cottage on a farm in Penzance. Then there is a kidnapping of a three-year-old girl who disappears from a local day care centre. Lauren and Matt must now decide whether to prioritise the appearance of a body or a sudden disappearance of a child.  The missing little girl is the more compelling of the two and as the search for little Isla continues a second child Violet vanishes from a different childcare nursery and panic set in. But Then Matts daughter Dani goes missing from yet another different childcare nursery. Will the detectives find the children in time, and can they identify the bones that had been discovered?
I absolutely loved this story, and The Lost Girls of Penzance is a straightforward police procedural where the investigation leads to a conclusion. This is a fast paced read with many twists and turns. You will find yourself hooked and not be able to put this murder mystery down. I look forward to reading more books by Sally Rigby.
