Cleo and Samara are neurodiverse cousins who are working at the antique shop. They are supposed to be helping Samara’s mum with book deliveries, but one day an unusual customer arrives and Cleo sells to him a very special book that was meant for one of deliveries. Cleo runs after him but is soon starting to feel overwhelmed due to all the city noises - will she be able to get the book back?
It is an engaging story. The last page has some ideas with reading and spoken language objectives as well as prompts for quality discussion.
Working in a book shop isn't meant to be dangerous, but Cleo MacGuffin longs for adventure, although she wasn't expecting it to fall at her feet! When a young customer named Theo flees clasping a book he shouldn’t have bought, Cleo rushes after him and suddenly she has all the adventure she wanted and then some!
This story is only 29 pages long, but an awful lot happens. As the first of three books, which I imagine will all be roughly the same length, this bodes well for the following two adventures. It covers subjects such as friendship, hidden disabilities, and forgiveness alongside a healthy dose of magic. The guidance offered at the end of the book aims to increase comprehension skills and could be adapted for use with other books at this level.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Collins Big Cat, but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a surprisingly entertaining story given the book's length, which will suit even the most reluctant of readers aged 9 to 12.
A short interesting and exciting story book, with related pictures, for Primary Age children. A story with magic. A story with a mistake, to be corrected. A story of thinking of others needs. For schools and home-schooling there is a nice section at the end to review and extend the readers understanding. Thank you to Collins Education and NetGalley for the ARC.
