Alfie Smith is eleven and about to start senior school. Autistic, he has learnt how both its positive and negative aspects effect his everyday life. He knows how it helps him navigate his days and he understands who and what to avoid to prevent things getting on top of him. Unfortunately some people don't understand or think causing a meltdown is hilarious.
After an unfortunate incident at the leisure centre, Alfie spots a puzzle which intrigues him. He discovers his autism is a strength when trying to solve the puzzle and very quickly he's hooked.
Alfie is a great main protagonist and his understanding of how his autism both helps and hinders his everyday life is shown throughout in a positive but not simplistic way. His discovery of the Rubik's Cube, called a cube puzzle in the story, and how it changes things for him, is written in a fun, original, and well explained way. It gets a serious message across sympathetically is accompanied by learning activities to increase comprehension. I have autistic grandchildren and found this both informative and educational. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Collins Big Cat, but the opinions expressed are my own. This is a fun way for any child to learn about the characteristics of autism and is highly recommended.
