Me hearties!
I received this children’s book as an arc via @netgalley. The story is written by @chrisbradfordauthor. Thanks for providing the arc!
As a teacher I always like to get to know more children’s books and this booktitle just struck me. I had to read it, because I was really curious about this topic. I can say I have learned a lot of new things because of this book. I actually did know only ONE of the female pirates Chris talks about in this book. I think the book was wonderfully set out and was written in a very nice way, which I think makes it easy for kids to read. I would definitely let my students read this book, because I think they would enjoy this a lot.
So about which female pirates is this book, you say? Well, ofcourse, there’s the well-known Anne Bonny, but there’s also: Artemisia I of Caria, Sayyida Al Hurra, Grace O’Malley, Mary Read and last but definitely not least Zheng Yi Sao. All powerful women who dared to sail the seas and defy anyone who stood up against them. Besides that Chris also informs you about the timeline of these badass women, the pirate code, the ships and the fleet, and even more female pirates! Oh, and last but surely not least you can even learn some Pirate talk and jokes. A nice addition to the story.
Some of the jokes:
“What kind of grades did the pirate get in school?” High C’s!
“What did the ocean say to the pirate?” Nothing, it just waved.
