Thanks to Little Brown Books for providing me with an e-copy of The Trial of the Sun Queen for a fair and honest review.
The premise of this book has great promise, and although I found the world building and character development a little underwhelming, I did enjoy the story over all.
We get some background on the different regions of Ouranos and the politics between them, but I would have liked a bit more focus in world building, to give depth and background to why the plot was unfolding the way it did.
I really wanted more developed back stories for characters like Gabriel and Callias, but I can see where this may come in the next books in the series. I hated Atlas as the MMC, but I guess that’s kind of the point. That there’s something a bit off about him and his actions throughout so you’re always questioning what his motives are. That’s why there is little to no chemistry build up between the FMC and MMC but I’m hoping this changes now that Nadir is fully in the picture! I enjoyed Nadir and Lor’s dual POV and that as the reader, we are anticipating the moment where their storylines finally meet.
I think this book got better as it went a long and, with the few teasing revelations in the last quarter, I’m really intrigued to read book 2.

A classic fantasy tale told from the perfect Ive of the underdog. We were constantly taken through the trials and tribulations of Lor’s life. Starting from the inside of a prison and moving to the most peculiar of ends, the story never ends in how the reader can’t expect what happens. I loved how we explored the relationships between Lor and all of the characters. Enemies, siblings or mentors, I loved being involved in every aspect of her life. All I’ll say is don’t judge a book by its cover because this book certainly proves that.

Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this.
This book was fun, it got me hooked to the story and the characters and made me want to read what was gonna happen next. If you're looking for something quick and fun, this is it

First book a new series for me? Quite possibly.
This was an undeniably fun read. Nothing too complex but it keeps you interested throughout. It is predictable but that's not always a bad thing. It's a good comforting read that has a good pace to keep you reading.
The world building in this instalment hopefully sets up the next couple of books well. The trials are very hunger games esque which isn't a bad thing.
The romance is decent but hopefully picks up in the next book.
I hopefully get to read the next book soon.

This is one of those books that I would recommend someone to read if they want a fast paced romp, with a fair amount of action, that is an easy read, especially if they are looking for something that feels very Sarah J. Maas-esque.
That being said, the plot character and world building elements that have been pulled from popular fantasy, most notably the Throne of Glass and A Court of Thorns and Roses series have been replicated so closely that the plot feels very predictable.
I will be reading the second book, because the read was undeniably fun, and did get a bit of adrenaline pumping, which is why I gave this book three stars.

2.5 stars

This was a enjoyable read and I really liked the ending. I just feel that it had so much potential, and didn't quite fulfil it. I was left feeling like I had so many unanswered questions and there were a few parts which didn't make sense to me. I didn't feel any attachment to Lor as a character because I didn't feel like I got to know her enough.
My main problem was that the Sun King Atlas is never held accountable for his actions. Because he is king? Because he is fae? The tributes are basically told ' if anything happens, then it's your fault', which I think is way out of line.
It was interesting however, in the last quarter of the book, to watch the veneer start to crack and Lor to realise he is not what she thought. His glow seemed to dull. I think really, she was too distracted by his looks that she didn't bother to look into his character.
This itself felt out of character... she's a surviver. She's spent her life fending for herself, doing what she can to survive in prison and not trusting anyone but her siblings, because everyone has an ulterior motive. Yet she takes one look at the Sun King and doesn't question anything. It's just odd to me.
I did however enjoy the worldbuilding and I'm interested in how the second installment plays out. It was fascinating to me, how the history between the two nations was intertwined and I would like to know more about them.
Thank you so much NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review! ❤️

Trial of The Sun Queen is a fae fantasy novel that will satisfy the appetites of readers who’ve enjoyed the likes of Holly Black etc. I thought it was fine. It took a while to get moving which takes away from the enjoyment a little when you’re not racing to see what happens. It’s an ok addition to an already saturated genre.

Book Review 📚
Trial Of The Sun Queen by Nisha J. Tuli - 4.5/5 ⭐
The first book in the start of a series and I cannot wait to get my hands on the next one! What a absolutely beautiful read. I thoroughly enjoyed it. As always, I went in blind after choosing to read based on the cover alone! I think it's safe to say that this is going to be a hit with SJM fans.
Our FMC, Lor, was utterly amazing! Probably not in the good way as she's an absolute mess but I loved her. There's something about her that just instantly makes you love her. She's the FMC you always want to read about, and then take home and keep!
The world building throughout this book was MIND BLOWING. Oh my god I have never read anything like it. So much so, there aren't enough words to describe how unbelievably phenomenal it was. That was absolutely the highlight for me. Along with added bonuses of course. Character developments are right up there along with description throughout. All of it was fantastic.
The trials were such an awesome addition. It's very Hunger Games vibes, but that's not a bad thing. I think it was absolutely awesome. Have you ever wondered what you look like when reading? I guarantee with this book I was at the edge of my seat waiting for something to just send me over the edge. Mind-blowingly good.
I think the dual POV was an excellent touch from two completely different people and it really helped the story. Tuli has a truly magical mind and after that cliffhanger of an ending I can't wait to see in the next book! I'm going to be counting down the days.
Thank you to NetGalley and Little Brown Book Group for allowing me to read this ARC - this is an HONEST review from my own personal opinion.

Trial of the Sun Queen is the first in a a Romantasy serie, so if you like SJM or similar, you can give it a shot! The first book follows Lor, in a kind of jail since she was a kid, and who gets taken away by a fae to contend in the sun queen's trial. Thing is, she doesn't know more that us what the hell she's doing here, what the trial is, and why she's the only mortal contestant. We also get the POV of Nadir, trying to figure out why his king father is freaking out that this mysterious convict disappeared. So he tries to figure out who it was, and what happened to them.
Fast paced and intriguing, I ŕeally liked this first book!
*Thanks to Netgalley and Little, Brown Book Group UK for the e-arc against an honest review.*

Thank you to the author and publisher for opportunity to read this ARC,, it is greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, this wasn’t for me. I found the MC got into too many fights too quickly and I just struggled to connect with the characters.

This was such a good book to read at the end of long rubbish workdays - it was a great escape 🖤
This is a fast paced spicy New Adult Romantasy - my favourite genre. Our MFC, Lor has been locked up for 12 years in prison (since she was a young child) with her siblings 🔒
She’s kidnapped from the prison and taken to a neighbouring kingdom where she has to compete in the Sun Queen Trials with 9 other competitors. This consists of 4 dangerous challenges to get the opportunity to be selected as the Sun King’s bonded/wife ☀️
I really enjoyed some of the side characters, such as Gabriel (the Sun King’s guard), however the other contestants felt a tiny bit flat at times.
I’ll stop there to avoid any spoilers 🤐
It did have some ACOTAR vibes at times, but I really enjoyed ACOTAR so I’m fine with that 🙈
The world building during the first third or so of the book was great, I wish this had continued through the rest of the book. Had this had stronger world building, I think this would have been a 5 star read for me ⭐️
This is a really enjoyable read and I recommend it if you’re after a New Adult Romantasy escape ❤️

Let me just start by saying that I am a big fan of Nisha J. Tuli and her work, and this installment is no different. "Trial of the Sun Queen" is an absolute page-turner! From the moment I started reading, I was hooked into this world that Tuli has created.
It has been described as the “The Bachelor meets the Hunger Games", and I would sayt that is pretty accurate. There is ten women. a deadly contest and only one of them can win the Sun King's heart.
"Trial of the Sun Queen" is a thrilling blend of love, revenge, and survival that will keep you enthralled until the very end. If you're looking for a gripping read that's equal parts heart-pounding and emotional, this book should be at the top of your list. I devoured it and can't wait to see what Nisha has in store next!
(will be updated with links when the review is postet on my other platforms)

If you liked the last half of Acotar then I would love to tell you that this whole book is like that.
I read it just because of the fact that it's like acotar and it didn't disappoint.
Tropes:
-Reverse grumpy X sunshine
-Enemies to Lovers
-suspenseful romance
-The selection but with Hunger Games vibes
-Slow burn
-Fae fantasy
This has a strong FMC( A FIGHTER, AND A SURVIVOR). I honestly didn't like her much at first but then she grew on me. I mean who doesn't like a fmc who says stuff like:
"Every second. Every minute I’m focused on the day I finally get free. I live it in my dreams and see it when I’m awake. I feel it in the shivering marrow of my bones. One day, I’ll get out of here and pay back the Aurora King for everything he’s taken. For everything he’s done."
"With a temper like mine, a girl is bound to get in trouble now and then…
or often. "
"I may not understand how to use a sword, but I’ve been in hundreds of fights throughout my life, and I know how to make a man twice my size weep. This twig of a beach* is no match for me. Even if she is Fae. I hope."
Don't blame me, I am just a simple girl You say strong female main character and I say I love it.
"He lowers his head and peers at me, meeting my eyes. “No. I can see the life you’ve lived in the depths of your eyes. You are no fool, and you are not ignorant. Perhaps you didn’t learn how to waltz or play the piano, but those are things the rich do merely to fill their time. They aren’t important and they mean nothing. You’ve lived, Lor. You must have experienced so many terrible things in that prison.”
That's what I want to say to our fmc.
Oh let's talk about the shady sun king, That sun king was being extra nice without any reason and giving off total playboy vibes. I hate the guy. So yeah this is a slow burn enemies to lovers(just what I love)
Some characters were good but mostly none of them were reliable.
There was A LOT of cursing going on in there, I don't mind it but for some reason it was weird.
I've said it once, and I'll say it again: If you loved Acotar series, then READ THIS.
I love how there are so many secrets left and now I just want to get into the next book in the series.
Yours truly,
Desperately waiting for the third book

"Trials of the Sun Queen" embarks on a captivating journey with Lor, who is given the opportunity of a lifetime as she transitions from a long-term prisoner to a participant in the trials to become the Sun Queen. The story opens with a promising premise, drawing readers in with Lor's quest for freedom and vengeance. The world-building is skillfully executed, introducing a realm teeming with unanswered questions, which adds to the story's allure.
However, as the narrative unfolds, it became slightly predictable, as certain plot developments become foreseeable. Despite this, the book's compelling story kept me. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down, a testament to its engaging storytelling.
This is a good read as it offers a unique blend of intrigue, romance, and adventure, and though it may follow some familiar beats, it manages to keep its readers spellbound until the very end. I recommend this book to lovers of fantasy, romance with a tint of adventure and mystery.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Enthralling and addictive seem to be the words I associate with Nisha J Tuli's stories. Trial of the Sun Queen is an addictive fae romance with a brown heroine you're gonna love, a brown fae you want to trust, and a brown fae who is going to surprise you! When I say that I cannot wait to read more is an understatement!!
If you enjoy reading about fae, slow-burn enemies-to-lovers, court politics, and a brown girl going against all odds, come here. This is going to be a faentastic book journey with "I don't trust you but should I?"and "I really shouldn't but I want to kiss you" in the next book.
I loved the romance, I loved the worldbuilding, I loved the prose, but most of all, I think I loved how the author portrayed the characters.
Lor is truly a heroine you're going to root for, a young woman who has survived the most unthinkable situations with her mind intact and her priorities unwavering. She fights for herself and for her family and uses all means necessary to protect them and herself, and I do mean all means. She doesn't sugarcoat anything; she sees the big picture. She really is the epitome of long-term thinking. I also liked how she criticized the beautiful Aphelion aka Sun King's palace even though she admired its beauty and sparkle. It'd be so easy to close your eyes and be grateful you're surrounded by gold and not the dirt you previously had. But Lor never takes the easy road. She criticizes and speaks the truth even though it'd be more prudent to say nothing.
But the author's brilliance shines on her portrayal of Atlas and the scenes between him and Lor. You want to believe in him and trust him, but there's always something tiny-may be a tiny hint or just a tiny feeling-that makes you hold back, just like Lor holds back a little. He says the right things, he shows the right expressions, but his lack of actions strengthen that instinct that tells all of us that he may not be whom he portrays himself to be. AND I LOVED EVERY FREAKING SECOND OF IT! This tug-of-war of my feelings "Believe in him!" and "Um, let's get the heck out of here!" was so addictive!!!!!
Some people will certainly say that the slow-burn is too slow, but isn't that the best kind of slow-burn? For me, a quick slow-burn is an oxymoron and a way of avoiding saying that this just wasn't for me 🙈 This series IS FOR ME, AND I LOVE IT VERY MUCH!!!
It's written in dual POV-of Lor's and Nadir's- but it's mostly Lor's. Who is Nadir, you might wonder. Oh, he's the other mc & my obsession! Nadir, a brown fae who is angry at the world, mistrusting, fiercely protective, smart, ruthless when needed (and it's truly needed), and who happens to have two white hounds he likes sleeping next to. I didn't know what to think of him in his first POVs, but I liked him more and more as time went. I really loved him by the end, and I want to protect his angry self as much as his fierce hounds.
The next book will be PERFECTLY AND PAINFULLY DELIGHTFUL!!!!
I'm a big, big fan of Nisha J. Tuli's, and I just want MORE.
A great twisting and compelling first book that sets off one of the delightful fae romance series that will set its claws in you. You're not going to stop thinking about this series; I promise 😈

Lor and both her siblings are an inmate of Aurora Fairy Court's jail since young age. They must survive hardlife and daily challenges without actually know why they must stays there. The hidden mystery seem left behind expecially when Lor being kidnapped to Sun Fairy Court to join deadly trial to become companion and Sun Queen.
The writing is enjoyable and entertaining. Lor was impulsive, easy got into troubles and very easy to being triggered. She seems thinks and acts such as younger than her age. But I tried to understand because the conditions and place she grew. The pace is moderate and the romance is deliciously slow burn with extra fires. We seen alot trope and similar plots from another stories but this one still enjoyable and engaging to follow.
The trial was challenging and at some points capable bring death but the stakes still lower than another deadly competition. I really like the lore and worldbuilding, I expecting more of it in the next books. This book was my first read from the author and wasn't become my last. I am excite to continue with the second installment.
For readers who love Bachelor sitcom and Selection series but with extra blood sparkles, they will love to read Trial of the Sun Queen.
Thank you Netgalley and Orbit from Little Brown Books UK for provided my ecopy of this book. My thoughts and opinions always become my own.

I . WAS . HOOKED!!
I couldn't put this book down, it drew me in right from the beginning and I needed to know what was going to happen. I found myself sneaking away from my WFH desk to continue reading, and staying up way too late after my 8 month old had gone to bed to sneak more pages in! And to me, that is a sign of a good book! I luckily had Book 2 ready to go, so I dove straight in!

Trial of the Sun Queen follows Lor, a young woman in prison with her brother and sister, where they have been since childhood. When there is a break-in at the prison, Lor finds herself spirited away to the land of the Sun King, where she is told that she must compete in the Sun Queen Trials to become the next partner of the King. Along the way, Lor must prove herself against fae who are seemingly more powerful than her, but she begins to discover truths about herself along the way, as well as the real and sinister reason she has been brought to the Sun King. I really enjoyed this book and found it impossible to put down, and I loved finding out more about Lor, and her new friends in the trials. The plot twists were excellently written and I found the characters to be really interesting and perfectly developed. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a fantasy novel somewhat similar to The Selection but with lots more action and adventure, which stands out from the crowd as the next big fantasy series.

From the very first chapter I was invested in Lor's journey, and her liberation from 12 years of horrific imprisonment.
With two parallel POV, we follow Lor through her forced quest to survive the trials to become the bonded of the Sun King, Atlas, whilst the Aurora Prince, Nadir, works to find the missing inmate of so much importance to his father.
With a giggle to myself from the Author's Note:
"This series is a bit of a slow burn, so the really steamy stuff comes in later books (I promise)."
The hints as to Lor's hidden identity are skilfully woven into her fight for freedom, and Nadir's wish to free himself and his kingdom from his tyrant father.
Overall, a gripping, fantastical read, with promises of more to come.

Trial of the Sun Queen is a mix between The Selection and Throne of Glass. This new adult fantasy felt like a YA, the writing lacked complexity and excitement. The main character, Lor, has definite “not like other girls” energy that I could not connect to and there were things I couldn’t get past. While witnessing a magic illusion, she says it looks just like being on the ocean floor but then says she has never seen the ocean before which I know sounds petty and minor but it just pulled me out of the suspension of disbelief. There is information that could easily be fed in a first person narrative that the writer does not, leading to confusion and ultimately made me feel disconnected from the characters and narrative. In a book on the shorter side such as this one, I usually expect things to happen faster or for complexities to be built earlier but by a third of the way through I just felt bored.
