I did not finish this book. I tried to but it lost me. I tried multiple times to get back into it but had difficulty pushing through.
The book is about Jodi Arias' case from 2008, when she killed her boyfriend. Jodi was arrested and sent to prison for life. It's a detailed and well-written research by psychology experts on her psychopathic personality. Good read for those who like true crime genre.
Well, Researched and Exceptional Detail
In 2008 Jodi Arias murdered Travis Alexander. Descent into darkness is a book written by a team of clinicians, and experts on psychopathologist's, who delve into the details of Jodi Arias crime and her claims of how the murder took place.
Jodi stabbed Travis 27 times and shot him in the head and then she proceeded to slit his throat. The book goes into Jodi's Psychopathy, her very odd behaviour, her incessant lying, her manner of speech, and her demeanour.
This book is defiantly worth a read as it is professionally researched and analysis each of Arias claims and writings by Arias. The book explains and illustrates in exceptional detail what makes a true psychopath. It shares some messages between the pair. This book is a bit repetitive in places but saying that it was well worth reading, and I recommend this book for true crime readers. Thanks to NetGalley and to the publishers of this book for giving me a free advance copy of the book to preview and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC. all opinions are my own.

A unique study of the murderer of Travis Alexander by a group of psychologists. They examine the psychophy o Jodie. While reading, we step into the world of a psychopathic personality; and boy is it chilling.
This book doesn’t delve into the shocking headline details of the heinous murder but more into what motivates a psychopath and how they use deception and camouflage interchangeably to justify their actions towards their own fulfillment.
Travis recognizes traits in Jodie that are inherently dangerous but doesn’t necessarily understand how to process and protect himself from the manipulation and danger that comes with dealing with a psychopath.
Anyone reading will finish this with a sense of unease and ponder on how possible it might be to be ensnared in the same situation.
Descent Into Darkness is a fascinating, unique look into the Jodi Arias case. In 2008, Arias was arrested and tried for killing her boyfriend, eventually sentenced to life in prison. This case was a national story, chronicled on all the major true-crime shows. But if you’re looking for a re-telling of the crime and trial, then this book is not for you. Rather, it’s a compelling, in-depth deep dive into the mind of Arias, penned by clinicians and psychological experts. While the book can get a little repetitive in spots, it’s still a must read for true crime fans, especially those who’ve followed this story and are looking for a different angle. I received an ARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Living in UK I didn't know much of this murder but I did recognise the name Jodi Arias.
This book is really well researched and they cover all the important points explaining the whys and wherefores.
Some of the excuses Arias used, every one of them conflicting, were so confusing, especially as she had photographed it all in detail.
I was fascinated by this book and would definitely read this type of book again.
True Crime buffs and especially the psychopathology. of it all, will really enjoy this fantastic book, but some of it did go over my head
A different look at the Jodi Arias case, written by an anonymous group of psychologists to avoid threats. There are details of her crime, along with insights into her psychopathy and how it affected the story and her decision to murder Travis Alexander. It shares some of the messages between Jodi and Travis. Some parts are a bit repetitive, but overall, it’s enlightening.
A gripping exploration of the Jodi Arias case, delving beyond the typical true crime narrative to dissect the intriguing psychology behind one of the most notorious trials in recent history. Authored by a team of clinical experts, the book meticulously uncovers the layers of Jodi Arias's behavior, her intricate lies, and the chilling details of the murder of Travis Alexander. The narrative not only presents the facts of the case but also delves into the psychopathology that drove her actions, offering readers a comprehensive understanding of the complex factors at play.
This book serves as a testament to the meticulous research and analysis undertaken by the authors, who expertly interweave the murder investigation, the trial, and the psychological insights that shed light on Arias's behavior.
If you're into true crime stories that'll totally mess with your head, Descent into Darkness is like the ultimate rollercoaster ride. Imagine this – this chick Jodi Arias goes and kills her boyfriend in this crazy brutal way. But what really gets you is how she's all over the place – first she didn't do it, then she's like, "Yeah, I did it, but it was self-defense, yo!" It's nuts!
So, me and true crime are like peanut butter and jelly – we go way back. But this book, man, it's next-level stuff. It's not just about the murder and the trial, it's all about Jodi's twisted mind and how she went from one crazy lie to another. And guess what? This book's got all the psych stuff broken down too, written by the pros who really know their stuff.
Loads of interesting information here, much of which goes beyond the specifics of Jodi Arias and her crimes to give insights into psychopathy and the working of the mind. It is unapologetically against Jodi Arias and does not seek to understand or excuse her crimes. This is kind of refreshing, to be honest. The murderer and her crime are analysed without the layer of analysis as to what mitigating circumstances might exist. It also gives the authors some freedom to throw in dark humour and many sarcastic comments, which they do well.
Very frustrating book. So many lies, same thing over and over.
Thanks to author, publisher and Netgalley for the chance to read this book. While I got the book for free it had no bearing on the rating I gave it.
Descent into Darkness is an absorbing and gripping true crime book about Jodi Arias. It’s engrossing in two ways. First, the facts themselves about her crimes and the nature of her denials are intrinsically fascinating. Just reading it alone is worth the ride. However, what sets this book apart from typical true crime books is that it was written by a team of psychological professionals who deconstruct and analyze each of Aria’s claims and writings (including her Manifesto). Much of the book is dedicated to explaining and illustrating in excellent detail what makes a true psychopath. Indeed, the group of writers were so entrenched in the specifics of the story and had written such detailed accounts in the past, that they had received death threats from Arias’ fans, and decided to publish this book under an alliance, The Analytical Media, LLC. If I have one criticism of the book it’s that I did not appreciate the writing style when they occasionally wrote directly to Arias with undisguised anger. I fully recognize their anger but I feel it would have been more effective if written more dispassionately in those places. Notwithstanding this minor point, this book is a chilling, absorbing and intellectually interesting read. I couldn’t put it down. I highly recommend it.
