This was an audiobook. I loved this, read it so quickly. The different perspectives and the fact that it encompassed so many facets to life and family life for this group of people on the run.
It was a totally fascinating insight into the perspective of not only the person on the run but the child of somebody on the run.
An interesting audiobook about criminals who are on the run to escape being sent to prison. What I found interesting was their real life stories and no matter how long they are on the run they are constantly looking over their shoulder. Someone is always willing to claim a reward if they recognise you and tell the police where they are. It also explored the impact on their family and how hard it is. A really interesting listen.
An interesting luaten about tge reality of going on the run for all concerned. Using real life cases yhis brought to lifht a complicated non black and white issue.
I felt all areas were vovered but some were in more detail due to tge naturr of the book. The narrator being tge son of one of the great train robber grounded it fir me. The only thjng it fidnt cover wnoght for me was guilt. U could see a series from this or a prodcasrxaeries. I loved all rge teal oeople who werent fanous. Lots of research.
Thank you netgallery and publisher and author and narrator for a cracking 5 stat listen that was too short
Fugitive! is a fascinating insight into all aspects of a life on the run.
It avoids the romantic and sensationalist "catch me if you can" type image of a criminal evading the law and being one step ahead of those chasing them, and instead digs down into the realities of that sort of life. This includes the practicalities - why fugitives chose the countries and cover stories they do, how effective these are, extradition treaties, paperwork and money issues. However it also delves into the mental side of it a lot - the affect constantly looking over your shoulder, or moving countries has on you and your family. Each chapter is very good.
However what really sets Fugitive! apart from other similar books for me was the first party sources that Nick Reynolds managed to speak to - there's such a good mix, from a current Fugitive hiding out in Dubai, to a former detective, from a reformed criminal who went on the run to family members of those who did the same. These people are given the time and space to tell their stories in and open and honest manner that I felt gave me such a good insight on the subject.
Overall, I really enjoyed the audiobook, thank you to the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review - glad I can say I honestly enjoyed it!
This novel mix of audiobook and podcast is ostensibly about the practical and psychological dimensions of going on the run. How does it actually work? What is like? Through interviews with academics, police experts, and current and former fugitives, we're given an insight into how the exercise can be at once romantic and bathetic.
But the emergent and most interesting aspect of the book is its exploration of the moral dimension of evading the law. Reynolds and his interviewees pick over thorny questions about the nature of bravery, the extent to which we can trust our impression of others, and whether fleeing the law is an inherently selfish act.
It's a fascinating set of discussions that, while inevitably short on hard answers, is an interesting journey to go on.
A fascinating insight into being on the run including interviews with real fugitives and their reasoning for choosing life on the run, why and how. As well as discussions with experts in the criminal justice system.
The interviews were genuine and compelling and it was great to have the thoughts from Nick Reynolds as a perspective of having been taken on the run himself as a child.
Engaging and exciting from the beginning. A very realistic feel for the reader.
An irresistible slice of escapism and a great listen. Narrations were outstanding.
When I saw the title of the book, it was definitely enough to intrigue. It’s an interesting subject and not one I’ve honestly really thought about much so I was curious. It was just as interesting as I thought it would be!
I’ve previously enjoyed Channel 4’s Hunted and this features some who have worked on the show. What it takes to go on the run, examples of cases, the planning and how they may be taken down. From police officers views, to those who have been on the run, it’s a great book with a variety of really interesting perspectives and experiences. It was so compelling and entertaining but also enlightening and really well put together.
It has an awesome true crime podcast feel, with interviews with criminal profilers to those who have been on the run telling their stories. It was kind of amazing to hear stories from the view points of people who have actually been through this and it was like no audiobook I’ve ever listened to before! Really worth a listen.
