This was a fantastic sampler, enticed me just enough and was sad when there were no more stories to read. Greatly looking forward to reading the collection in its entirety. Would be wonderfully adapted into a miniseries as well.

I enjoyed the NetGalley sample of this enough to go and buy the hardback and read it in one sitting. The stories vary from a 2-5* for me but definitely swang towards a high rating. I don't read lots of horror and think that most of the stories are on the gentler side of things even though there are lots of dark elements and themes. If you are interested in the psychology of navigating whiteness as a Black person, this collection delivers on multiple levels. I was spoiled because N.K. Jemisin and Nalo Hopkinson are two of my favourite authors and they did not disappoint.

A genuinely great collection of horror from POC authors, collated by the modern king of horror. A fantastic anthology!

This was such an unusual, unsettling and quietly revolutionary collection of stories. I loved so many of the pieces of fiction and I can’t wait to read more by each of the writers.

★★★★✩ - A chilling collection that screams for change

Out There Screaming, edited by Jordan Peele and John Joseph Adams, is a haunting horror anthology that also serves as a powerful call for social justice. Through spine-tingling tales penned exclusively by Black authors, this book sheds light on the unique terrors and injustices faced by the Black community. The stories range from eerie to downright terrifying, with imaginative plots and immersive prose that will keep you up at night. More than just scares, Out There Screaming gives voice to marginalized groups and amplifies their demand for equality. A thrilling yet thoughtful read for horror fans seeking both entertainment and enlightenment.

The sample was more than enough to entice me to buy the book. I absolutely loved this collection, and I have a host of new authors to add to my TBR. My favourite story was the first one from NK Jemisin about the man and his eyeballs. I have MISSED this kind of horror on my new release shelves, and it was wonderful to get into the grit and grime of that story, with its madness, its gore, and its message. I loved it. The Rider by Tananarive Due was my other stand out. What an incredible piece of work. That'll stay with me. I loved it, I love Jordan Peele's advocacy for horror, and I hope there are many more volumes of this.

I wrote out a list of my favourite stories in this collection, followed by the stories that stuck with me well after I had finished reading them and quickly realised it was essentially the entire Contents page.

If I had to pick my top three, they would be:

Invasion of the Baby Snatchers, by Lesley Nneka Arimah, which was an alien invasion pregnancy body horror that gripped me from the first paragraph. I want more of this character’s alien-hunting career.

A Bird Sings by the Etching Tree, by Nicole D Sconiers, which was a haunting tale of anger and revenge.

And Hide & Seek, by P Djèlí Clark, which was slow on the horror at first but came together in such a satisfying way.

The horror intensity and genre varied from story to story so don’t expect to be unable to sleep at night, but do expect a collection that covers everything from sea creatures to AI to the real-life horrors endured in Black history and to this day.

Ultimately Jordan Peele curated a collection of great stories from both authors I’ve read before and new to me, and many that I will definitely be reading more of.

Although I just got to read an excerpt, what I did read made me super excited to get into the rest of the book - really admire Jordan Peele and what he’s done for the horror genre and what I know of the collection so far gives me high hopes for the rest! I enjoyed the pacing of the excerpt and look forward to seeing horror in its other manifestations in the rest of the book :)

The stories in "Out There Screaming" cover a wide range of horror subgenres, from monster-hunting to AI rights, and from supernatural spirits to personal confrontations. This anthology is a showcase of Black American horror and is likely to leave readers both terrified and contemplative.

I read an excerpt of this book and I’m very intrigued!
The first story was good but the second story really peaked my interest, in fact I would love a full book for it.
I look forward to reading all the stories.

An amazing anthology of Black horror short stories! Like most anthologies, there were some stories that missed the mark for me, but overall this is a fantastic collection - highly recommended for any horror fan.

This was exceptional. An absolute powerhouse of a horror anthology, with incredible concepts and stunning writing. I would read every single story as a full length novel or go and watch it as a film. Perfect reading for Halloween and beyond.

However, I wish it would’ve been made clearer that this was a sampler rather than the whole book.

Wow what an original array of horror. Fantastic authors with a well thought collection. Some were creepy, others left me second guessing everything. Jordan Peele knows how to tell a story so it’s no surprise he knew how to collate an excellent selection of stories. I would recommend this book to everyone even of you don’t like horror/fantasy you would still appreciate this collection of stories for the storytelling alone.

I got to read the first two stories by N.K. Jemisin and Rebecca Roanhorse in the preview that I was lent and they were both very good stories. The authors in this collection are all to look out for and incredible writers.

I thought this sampler was so fun and horrifying at the same time. I found that the first story was more slow while the second was so fast and so good, I can’t wait to read the whole book

It’s so hard to rate this as I was unaware that I wasn’t actually receiving the full ARC but just a sampler containing two of the stories. I I did enjoy both of these stories and it has left me wanting more I just don’t feel like I can give a full review for an anthology based on a taster.

I recently read a Black horror anthology that I really loved, so when this one became available, I knew I had to try it! I really loved it. I didn't like all stories equally, but it definitely gave me a new love for horror stories. It's definitely more horror and modern maybe, than the anthologies that I've read. Maybe I should give Jordan Peele's movies a try now ;)

NetGalley and the publisher kindly provided a sampler of a horror anthology by all black authors called Out There Screaming. This anthology has been edited by Jordan Peele and when I saw this I knew I wanted to read it. The sampler contained two stories from Out There Screaming.

Reckless Eyeballing by N.K. Jemisin (3 stars)
This was a unique horror story that follows the main character Carl. This one was a bit of a miss for me as I felt like it didn’t quite deliver on the creepy vibes I was hoping for. However, I can say that it was definitely an interesting and odd story.

Eye & Tooth by Rebecca Roanhorse (5 stars)
This horror short horror story follows siblings Atticus and Zelda who have old family magic which they use to help people who have paranormal/supernatural problems. I have to say that this story was definitely high on the atmospheric and creepy radar for me. Roanhorse managed to build chilling suspense with a such a small word count and the ending I absolutely loved!!

I am a sucker for stories that pack a punch, and this sampler gave a great glimpse into the potential that this anthology has.
