A brilliant collection of modern horror tales from some fantastic authors. I’d not heard of most of these authors before reading this book, but I’m a huge fan of Jordan Peele so put my trust into his taste, and it worked. These stories were dark and twisted, with unexpected turns coming left right and centre.

This was a great start, cannot wait to pick up the whole collection. Going to be amazing, well worth it!

Thank you NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the ARC of this title in exchange for an honest review. I did however end up purchasing a physical copy of the collectors edition myself and reading that instead of the ARC edition so my review is based upon the final product!

I originally started keeping track of the ratings for each story as I was reading but eventually gave up (I'm lazy, okay!) but I found most of the to be a 3-5 star. There were only a couple I would potentially rate less than that, which given how many different authors contributed and the variety of stories in here is very, very good. Overall, I absolutely enjoyed my time reading this anthology and would recommed it to any fans of Jordan Peele. I could easily see this book becoming a horror anthology movie or multiple stories being turned into shorts. (PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, JORDAN!!!).

Definitely looking forward to reading more from authors I discovered through this book!

I don’t usually request samplers – especially not for anthologies, and if this had made it clear this was a sampler, I would have just waited until the book came out to get it. It’s incredibly hard to make a judgement on an anthology with only two stories from it. Anthologies hinge so much on how they all come together, and I’ve read anthologies in the past where the quality of stories varies massively. That said, this has such a solid list of names attached I’d be confident the rest of the stories are as good as the two I’ve now read.

The two stories included the sampler were Reckless Eyeballing by N.K. Jemisin and Eye & Tooth by Rebecca Roanhorse. With those names, you know you’re in for something good, and I was far from disappointed by these two. Reckless Eyeballing gives us a cop who starts pulling people over because he sees blinking eyes on their headlights. It’s creepy in a kind of understated way, and an excellent offering from one of my favourite writers.

Eye & Tooth absolutely hit a soft spot for me. Two siblings who travel around taking care of supernatural problems, each bringing their own special talents to the table. This one was intriguing as hell, had me totally hooked and if Roanhorse does more stories with these characters, I definitely want to read them. The ending packed a great punch, too.

So yes, not overly pleased this was a sampler and not identified as such, but still grateful to read these stories from two excellent writers, and eager to actually get my hands on a finished copy of this book, which is sure to be one of the top anthologies of this year.

I enjoyed the story but was disappointed that this was just a sample, as the netgalley description did not suggest this. I can't adequately review the entire book as I don't know the quality of the rest.

I can't help but feel like these stories have been a long time coming, we're finally entering an era where they're celebrated and led by the excellent Jordan Peele.

I don't know how to review this fully without spoilers (which I am staunchly against as a horror lover) but Violet Allen in particular is a star. Her writing gets under my skin in the most deliciously gruesome way and I'm still thinking about her story.

I hope this is just the beginning of a wonderfully frightening era of Black horror.

From this sampler, I can surmise that this anthology will definitely appeal to those that love Jordan Peele's works of horror. The first story, by N.K. Jemisin, is about a cop that keeps seeing eyes where there should be headlights. The social horror and the general sense of unease were very strong in this one, which I loved. The second story, by Rebecca Roanhorse, contains the name of the anthology and is about a sibling monster hunting duo that get more than they bargained for whilst staying at someone's house. This one definitely delivered on the plot twist, the atmosphere and the vibes. Both 5 star stories for me and I can't wait to read the rest of the collection!

I didn't realise this was just a sampler! I am very sad it's not the whole thing however since this is one of the best anthologies I've read so far.

I read a lot of horror anthologies and they're usually fairly hit or miss, with maybe one or two good stories. Admittedly there are only two stories here but they were both of extremely high quality and genuinely quite scary. I was completely sucked in and I think the first story in particular has such an interesting concept. I know it will stick with me for a long time.

I'll definitely be checking out the whole collection but so far so good!

As this is only a sampler, I don’t feel like I can judge the whole anthology but I am excited to read more of it.

I felt incredibly lucky to get to read a handful of stories from this anthology. Having Peele as the editor built up a lot of expectations for me, and it didn't fall short at all.

The tales were punchy and vivid and incredibly clever. The length was long enough to take root in your mind over the following weeks but short enough to reduce any triggering effects.

If I see this pop up in a bookshop or my local library I'll definitely be taking up the chance to read the rest.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC to review

3.5 stars???

I jumped at the chance to request this!! Instead of a full ARC I got an exclusive sampler which featured only 2 of the short stories featured in the collection.

The stories were:
Reckless Eyeballing by N. K. Jemisin
Eye & Tooth by Rebecca Roanhorse

From what I've read I'm excited to see/know what the other stories were like. Sadly a rounded up 3.5 as rating a whole short story collection based on the sampler is difficult.

But, regardless of this I did enjoy reading them!

I read a sample of this book on NetGalley, it's got 2 stories in it, from NK Jemisin and Rebecca Roanhouse.

Both stories are a great mix of, horror and supernatural with a touch of gore.

Absolutely loved both stories and can't wait to pick up a final copy of the book and read the rest of the book if the first 2 are anything to go by

Thanks to NetGalley and Pan MacMillan/Picador for the chance to read a couple of the stories from this book early.

Some promising material, but with only two stories available as a sampler, there's not quite enough material to make a judgement as to whether this represents a new direction or simply a slight re-arrangement of old tropes.

This excerpt from ‘Out There Screaming’ has made me even more excited to read the full collection (which I didn’t think was possible). It is exactly what you would want from a short story collection edited by Jordan Peele and the two stories in the excerpt gave me the same haunted feeling that his films do – leaving me going over the stories again and again in my head, trying to approach them from different angles and pull on different threads to tease out the cornucopia of ideas and questions they provoked. The two stories are carefully crafted and unpredictable and speak to the range that I think the full collection is going to hold within it. The perfect blend of real world horror and creepy fantasy, this is a must-read for Halloween season.

I both love and hate getting 'tasters' of an upcoming book, because they ALWAYS leave me wanting more! It's as if the publisher knows the quality that they've got, and just want to whet our appetites...

We have two stories here from a much-hyped anthology - and all that attention is justified, if these samples are typical of the whole.

These tales seem to tap into deeper mythologies, like their own monkey paw (appropriate, given Jordan Peele's production company!) or enduring legend that will resonate once read and re-read.

Yes, this teaser would make me even more determined to preorder the full book, if I hadn't already. I already love these authors and am keen to see what the rest of the contributors can do.

Incidentally, I'm a white British reader in England, and I had no problem becoming engrossed in these stories immediately. Just in case. Nobody is exempt from the quality of writing here.

Very unsurprisingly, I'm recommending this to everyone!

They say a taste of honey is better than none at all. After this sample, I want more honey.

The two tales - the taster from an anthology of tales by Jordan Peele that I was privileged to read - were a short-lived joy. Written with his unique style, they are as easy to consume as his films are to watch. And just as skewed. I was sad to have polished it off so speedily.

The first tale introduces us to a cop on a self-proclaimed rampage of justice that spirals out of control. He is evil incarnate yet labours under the illusion of having god on his side.. The sadly and increasingly everyday tale that we see through his eyes escalates as he is haunted by the strangest car based entity. I’ll say no more than that so as not to spoil the fun.

Then we have the brother and sister monster hunters with a twisty turny tale that flows like dark honey in its delivery. Character building in such a short story that had me bought in is no small feat and I just wanted so much more. The stories this man can weave in so few words astounds me.

Horror fans, Jordan Peele fans, word fans – get your eyes feasting upon this. The taste I had has turned me into a monster for the rest. Cannot recommend enough.

5 stars. All the way. An absolute joy to read this sampler.

Good sample of what is to come with this collection, I’m really excited to read the full thing. The sampler is creepy and intruding and these stories are going to be perfect for Halloween. I’m excited to see some of the other authors that are going to be included.

A sample of the first two short stories in this collection was more than enough to make me preorder a copy!

I love Jordan Peele's work and I just knew that anything selected by him for this collection would be chock-full of great horror and social commentary. The two stories in the sampler dealt with very different aspects but were equally great!

Reckless Eyeballing by NK Jemisin follows Carl, a cop, who begins to see eyeballs in headlights leading him to suspect the drivers of a crime. This story had that great, creeping horror quality and the author was amazing at creating unlikable characters in such a short time. A solid example of the mix of social commentary (police brutality) and horror I'd expect to find throughout this anthology.

Eye & Tooth by Rebecca Roanhorse focuses on Zelda and Atticus, sibling monster hunters, who accept a job in rural Texas. I loved the balance of the siblings against each other, the Eye and the Tooth, the planner and the free-spirit. The setting was some classic horror, spooky farm house in a spooky cornfield, and the tension was built perfectly.

I can't wait to get my hands on the full collection, as I'm sure the rest of the stories are of equal quality.

Absolutely smashed the pre-order button halfway through the first story, this is going to be visceral and horrible and bone-chilling and I absolutely cannot WAIT

A fantastic sampler bursting with talent, edited by one of modern horror’s strongest voices. Will most certainly be picking up the full collection upon its release in October!
