An illuminating creeping taste of the talented horrors within the full works! Jordan Peele is once in a generation talent.
Little bit confused and frustrated on discovering this was just a sample. I thought at first there was a technical issue. Would have saved time had this been stated.
The sample stories were great and definitely make me want to read the rest of the anthology. Horror shorts are where it’s at. Promising start. Disappointing that I couldn’t read more!!! I don’t think I can give a proper review as it would be an injustice at this stage to the book as a whole.
I hate using the word 'unputdownable' but this collection of new black horror fiction felt like it wrapped itself around my brain and wouldn't let me go until I had turned the last page. Incisive social commentary meets genuine scares in a superlative collection.
Great opener for this collection. Very descriptive and emotive language used in telling these horror stories from the chosen perspective. They were addictive and intense to read.
Looking forward to reading the Full collection when it is released. Get Out is one of my favourite horror films and it really changed the horror game.
What appealed to me to read this is not only Jordan Peele's name but also the authors listed inside this anthology - N.K Jemisin?? Rebecca Roanhorse?? P. Djèlí Clark?? And by the two stories I read in this sampler, I think this would be a promising anthology and I cannot wait to read it when it comes out.
This is the best way to showcase books! If the samplers are anything to go by then we are all in for a treat! Jordan Peele knows his stuff! Can’t wait to read the rest!
If the two story sampler is anything to go by, this is going to be an amazing short story collection. Gripping, creepy, satisfying reads. Looking forward to reading the complete anthology.
This sampler really whet my appetite! I can already tell this will be my favourite read of the year. I really wish that the 'sampler' part was a bit more clear :/
Really enjoyed the two short stories in this sample and can't wait to get my hands on the full collection!
A couple of stories from two great writers! Lucky to get a sample for an early read, Looking forward to what's going to be an excellent anthology!
A great sample of what I can only imagine is going to be an amazing book.! I love anything Jordan Peele related, so when I saw that he had edited this one, I knew I had to give it a go. I'm eagerly awaiting getting my hands on the finished thing!
Thank you to NetGalley, PanMacmillan and Picador for the sample.
I really enjoyed the two short stories that were included in the sample and am excited to read the rest of the book.
I will say I would have preferred if it was noted from NetGalley that it was a sample.
Note to NetGalley to please make it clear that is only a SAMPLE of the novel and only features the first 2 stories.
This story consists of short stories from many different authors of Black horror. I had the opportunity to read the first 2 short stories in the novel by N.K Jemison and Rebecca Roanhorse.
N.K Jemison’s short story follows Carl, a police officer who begins to see blinking eyes in place of car headlights. Jemison wrote the main character well in the sense of hating him. She displayed him and police brutality against POC, religion, age, gender, etc. extremely well to the point of raising awareness and education of police brutality and examples of what can happen. I hope I explained that well to people as a non person of colour only being able to educate myself of this topic having never gone through anything like it myself.
The second story by Rebecca Roanhorse follows 2 siblings on a trip to hunt something (seemingly paranormal) down. This story was so much fun.
I can’t wait to read the full book when it is released
N K Jemisin short story in this anthology extract is sublime. I am very much looking forward to reading the rest of the book. An absolute must.
This two-story sampler features new horror stories by NK Jemisin ('Reckless Eyeballing') and Rebecca Roanhorse ('Eye & Tooth'), and has definitely encouraged me to read the whole collection. Both stories are brilliantly atmospheric: Jemisin's features a sadistic black cop, driving around in the dark and spotting the vehicles that have eyes, while Roanhorse's follows a pair of siblings, professional 'monster hunters', who are called out to an isolated house in Texas in the middle of a thunderstorm (the narrator compares it to both Stephen King's 'Children of the Corn' and Andrew Wyatt's 'Christina's World'). I do think both stories could easily have been expanded into novellas; it just feels like there's more to say, and the endings are too abrupt. But they're still both well worth reading, and I'm excited to read on!
Some really great short stories. I can’t wait to get myself a full copy of this anthology! The discussion of social issues like racism and injustice really elevate this collection.
From these two stories and the blurb, seems like this is going to be a great anthology with a big range of horror stories by Black writers. The two in this sampler explore police brutality (from the perspective of a haunted cop) and supernatural power (and who looks after the monsters), with quite different tones and characters, and it'll be good to see what other stories are in the anthology. The cover's fun, too.
