This was adorable and I loved it. I am a total manga nerd and yuri manga is my absolute favorite. I have read so many of them and I am constantly looking for more so when new ones come out I am always so excited.
I am so excited for the rest of this series cause these two are adorable and I need to know what becomes of these two!
A sweet wholesome GL that looks like it might end up being a slower burn between a young women who is hard of hearing and her classmate who is starting to grapple with her sexuality, relationships and is adorablly persistent. I agree with the recommendation for those who like A Sign of Affection and are okay with Highschool/GL. I adore the amount of education taking place for the reader and the hearing female lead.
This first volume really helps set the stage for this series, the romance and challenges that these two will face along the way and I can't wait to experience the rest of their story. Highly recommend!!!
If you ever want to read a wholesome sapphic coming-of-age story, this is it! With beautiful, stunning artwork, these characters draw you in to their world. It's told from the perspective of Saki's experiences as she tries to befriend her heard-of-hearing classmate and crush, Kanon. Saki researches the deaf community and gets closer to Kanon. These two characters feel like poetry on page with piano music playing in the background.
The perfect read for a rainy day! I finished it so fast!
I also have to say it's in my humble opinion that the entire main cast is likely neurodivergent. Kanon gets obsessed with a J-drama and starts to learn sign language because of it. She also reads a lot of light novels and another classmate does to. The classmate gushes over the books she's read and apologizes for using "otaku speak." Like, hun, y'all are literally the AuDHD friend group. lol.
Can't wait for the next volume. Thank you NetGalley for an eARC!
This was a very nice read and I really enjoyed both the story and the art. It's a high school romance, so I naturally expected it to be more slice-of-life and with a coming-of-age aspect, which means I was (more than pleasantly) surprised how the story focused on not only Saki's problems with her piano teacher, but also how it presented Kanon's relatioships with other people. The way the story made space for her and her disability while also exploring the friendship and differences between Saki and Kanon was natural, and while Kanon talked about how being hard of hearing changed her life, it wasn't presented as an ultimate burden stopping her from being able to enjoy things.
As this was the first volume, I didn't expect it to be straight up about more romantic relationships, but the way Saki's feelings were presented felt really nice, especially the more subtle hints about her sexuality.
The artstyle was a golden standard of manga, greatly detailed and expressive, with more chibi characters for funny scenes and reactions.
Overall, it was a great start to an interesting Yuri title and I am looking forward to reading more volumes in the future.
This book was incredibly sweet and beautifully illustrated. The Moon on a Rainy Night highlights two classmates that form a unique bond. Kanon is hard of hearing and doesn’t let her walls down often. She is apprehensive to make new friends due to past fall outs & miscommunications, some of which are occur because of her disability. Saki is wondering if she can be the kind of friend Kanon needs but doesn’t really understand Saki or her apparent distance. This story shows how Kanon and Saki navigate their relationship and try to understand one another. It was a quick read and quite enjoyable. I look forward to seeing how the characters evolve in the next volume!
This is a very cute manga about a budding friendship and potential romance? later on in the novels. I'd certainly read the rest in the series to see what happens. I like the art style, storyline and very light romantic tension. It stays focused on the friendship instead of bombarding into romantic endeavors which is appreciated. They are in high school after all! I like the other girls in class warming up to Kanon thanks to Saki.
This was a very charming and sweet first volume! I love that from the get-go, you can get a sense of how Kanon and Saki's dynamics might grow, even from their first run-in to when they are officially introduced to each other in class. It's quickly established how both Kanon and Saki have their individual hangups on why it's harder for them to connect with people, yet they still find some sort of comfort in each other's company -- especially with Saki's persistance. It's a very sweet dynamic that also feels extremely natural in the tone of the writing.
I really love how Kanon's deafness is handled here, that it shows that there can be the harshness from others with bullies and people who are fed up with having to deal with her, while also showing the curiosity from Saki's side and other classmates. It's just extremely charming when Saki connects with her over piano and books as well, and I love when she really makes an effort defend Kanon and tries to learn how she should accomodate and be helpful in how she communicates. The art style really adds to the fluffy vibes and I love how even here alone, we can see Kanon softening up around Saki, and Saki growing confident as well. I'd definitely be interested in seeing how things develop in the next volume!
Characters: Kanon Oikawa, Saki Kindaichi
Plot: After a chance encounter, Saki finds herself dreaming of the pretty quiet girl she ran into (literally) in the street at night. Lucky for her the mysterious girl is in her school and sits right next to her! Kanon is hard of hearing and has no intentions of making friends at school. As the story progresses their friendship blooms and Saki learns what life is like for Kanon and Kanon learns to trust Saki.
Thoughts: I devoured this book like it was the last manga on earth, and I can’t wait for the next volume! I love how Saki takes her time to learn more about the deaf and hard of hearing community and does her best to be a good friend for Kanon. Kanon experiences so much growth in this volume in learning how to trust the people around her. The book does a good job showing some of the differences between hard of hearing and deaf people. I love these two so much and can’t wait to see where their relationship leads.
This is a surprisingly cute manga that focuses on a budding friendship (and future romance?) between two high school girls. Saki is intrigued by new student Kanon, who is very hard of hearing and seems icy at school, pushing everyone away at first meeting. Saki pushes through eventually, and strikes up a friendship with Kanon.
The way this volume approaches Saki and Kanon's growing friendship is really sweet, though the road is bumpy as Saki learns more about Kanon's disability, and Kanon figures out how to thaw out and let Saki closer. There are lots of lovely moments where they grow close and learn more about each other.
The romantic tension is very light, though it's not invisible; at this point it seems their friendship is the main point of the story, and I appreciate that. Saki seems to be struggling with her identity (though it's not outright stated that she, the story and art implies as much), and Kanon is a big question mark so far (but again, a scene provides possible subtext that implies she is also into girls). I like that the focus is on them learning how to be friends instead of immediately jumping into a romance.
I'll definitely be checking out more, I really enjoyed this first volume.
Thanks to Kodansha Comics and NetGalley for a review copy!
This is such a cute manga! The art and story makes me so happy. I think I would like to read the next volume, too, so I might have to go looking for it. I can't wait to see what else might happen!
what a lovely manga that focuses on a hard-of-hearing girl, Kanon, and a piano student, Saki. they are both in the same class at school and although at first Kanon is not fond of any of her classmates she starts to be friends with Saki.
we get to see a very lovely and realistic friendship between two teenage girls and hopefully, in future volumes, we will get to see how they are figuring out their friendship/relationship together.
can't wait for another volume!
After being helped by a stranger while coming home from a private lesson, Saki realises that this stranger is her new classmate Kanon, who is hard of hearing. This story follows them as their relationship develops and romantic feelings bloom.
This is a refreshing take for the Yuri/GL genre, since it's rare to encounter much disability representation there. The author clearly makes an effort to faithfully capture what that experience is like. I also love being able to see how Kanon opens up to the people around her. Really looking forward to seeing where their relationship goes from here !
CW for ableism and bullying.
Beautifully drawn with great HoH and queer rep !!! Very excited for more volumes to come out and to see their friendship and dynamic develop!!

Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC copy for an honest review.
This is a wholesome yuri romance manga. It's really cute and I enjoyed reading it. It was a quick read as I got though it in one sitting. The artwork is cute.
Rating: 4 Stars
How nice this beginning of the story.
We meet a young woman who plays the piano and another who has hearing loss. Due to destiny, their paths cross and they end up spending time together.
What I found most interesting and that I highlight a lot is how they present the theme of hearing loss, how the protagonist tells what it is like for her and what it means to be or be part of society when one has a certain difficulty ( and that many times we ignore or are not interested in getting involved).
I know that it goes towards the romance side and I like that, I know that it is going to present difficulties due to the personalities of our two protagonists, but I really liked that this volume did not focus on that. But in knowing and entering into their world, getting to know them little by little.
Thank you Kodansha Comics for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Dive into the heartwarming world of 'The Moon on a Rainy Night,' where unlikely friendships bloom amidst the rain. 🌧️
Meet Saki, a kind-hearted piano enthusiast with a tight-knit circle of friends, and Kanon, a newcomer known for her aloofness and preference for solitude. As someone who's felt like the odd one out before, Kanon's struggles resonated deeply with me.
Their evolving friendship forms the core of this captivating manga, and I can't help but root for them. 🌟
Drawing inspiration from beloved anime like 'My Little Monster,' 'A Silent Voice,' and 'Your Lie in April,' 'The Moon on a Rainy Night' beautifully captures the emotions of not wanting to get hurt again, reaching out to a newcomer, and finding warmth in unexpected places. 🎶
Vibes: 😨🙅♀️🤝🌈
If you're a fan of heartwarming stories of friendship and personal growth, 'The Moon on a Rainy Night' is definitely worth picking up. Grab a copy and let the rain of emotions wash over you. 📚💖 #MangaReview #FriendshipGoals #RainyNightReads

stop it a sapphic romance manga with disability rep?!?
my heart is already beating like crazy and the love story hasn't really started yet. i can't wait to read more.
how. to. wait. for. the. sequel. that's the end of the most interesting part. the ad in the work is annoying not just for its presence, but for the fact that there was not a single yuri/yaoi manga there. seriously, if i read something with lgbtq+, then recommend me something else queer.
Saki is a highschooler and works hard at her piano lessons so she can impress her teacher. It appears that Saki has a crush on this teacher and is devastated when the teacher reveals she is going on leave to have a child. Heartbroken, this is when Saki bumps into Kanon, a beautiful new student at her highschool, who is hard of hearing and because of it, keeps her guard up and spends her time mostly on her own.
When Saki and Kanon are placed next to each other in class and Kanon’s mother turns out to be Saki’s new piano teacher, they spend more and more time together and their friendship grows from there. Saki also discovers how inaccessible parts of the world are to Kanon and puts in work to be a better friend to Kanon.
I’m not hard of hearing so I cannot speak to how effective or thoughtful the efforts Saki goes through for Kanon, but I did appreciate how Saki isn’t a perfect ally at first and doesn’t realize what situations are difficult for Kanon to maneuver through but, as she learns, she begins to take initiative and this was really heartening to read. I will leave own voice reviewers to discuss Kanon’s representation.
One of the softest moments in this volume, and the moment we realize that Saki’s feelings for Kanon have blossomed into something alongside their friendship, occurs when they are learning some simple Japanese Sign Language together. Kanon shows that the symbol for marriage is represented by using the thumb for the man and the pinky finger for the woman. Later on, we see Saki wondering why the symbol for marriage could not be signed with both pinky fingers instead.
This story is very soft and very thought provoking.I think this manga will have readers feeling empathy for these two characters and falling in love with them too. I would very much like to continue reading this series and I look forward to more from this mangaka and their gorgeous art.
