We don't have a dog but consider getting one so that's why I was excited to give this book a read. I grew up with hunting dogs, and there are MANY poorly behaved dogs in our neighborhood, so I understand the importance of effective training, This guide delivers easy-to-follow tips to try for quickly teaching good manners and basic commands. Short training sessions are good for busy pet parents.
1 minute dog training is simply that, although Tom Mitchell does recommend longer to get the best results, the book is easy to follow and sets out the foundation training for any dog and also has a QR code you can scan that links you to his training videos, perfect for a beginner dog owner.
Who is this guy?
I really didn’t want to be THAT person, but as someone who has pretty much grown up, volunteered, and worked in almost all sectors of the dog world, I can’t help but think this book is a joke.
I love how respectful he is of the animals but if someone is buying this book to solve problems they’re going to he very disappointed with unrealistic expectations. He also demonizes any way of training that isn’t like his way. If we want to help dogs and people we need to be truthful and. It fear monger.
You only need to understand the very basics of dog training, like the three D’s: duration, distance, and distraction for this book to make you scratch your head in confusion. Along with that the book lacks organization and fails to help someone easily navigate training their dog.
Shepherd is also spelled incorrectly.

1 Minute Dog Training
Tom Mitchell
Short Synopsis
Tom gives advice on how to train a dog with kindness instead of with punitive measures.
My Thoughts
I liked some of his advice, other things seemed rather odd to me. Using TTouch Circles sounds like a good way to calm a dog. Asking a dog how it feels about getting a new name seems like a bit much! He also suggested that two cats weren't getting along partially because of their names being Eastwood and Bronson, since they faced off in westerns. Then the cats' owners had a chat with the cats asking them to stop fighting. Another odd one is asking a dog to stop barking using the word please in a complete sentence.
The book seemed to veer off in different directions and wasn't what I expected. The 1 minute training was not the focus. The attached video might be better for this, but I haven't watched it. I have no doubt that Tom Mitchell uses these methods with positive results. I just don't feel he wrote about them in a focused way.
This book was not what I expected from the title. I had thought it would be more practical and less theoretical. In the end, I don’t believe I will put most of this into practice. It does not actually seem quick to learn or to put into practice as the title implies.
Thank you to Netgalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I have two dogs and I found this book most interesting. Now to put all I have read into practice.
As a pet care provider, I find that this book is an excellent choice for busy people who are looking to train their dog in the limited time they have in a day. I do agree with the author that these short sessions are more likely to be done regularly because of their short duration and I do think this will encourage more people to try their hand at training their pup themselves.
I love the pictures and the end of chapter summaries to tie everything together. I think that the format is great for those with limited time to digest and they will find it easy to understand. The website companion is also a very nice touch for visual learners and those who just want to make sure that they are doing everything correctly. The breakdown on the site between puppies and older dog videos is excellent.
I like that the author's deep love for animals is clear throughout the book. Those are the kind of authors I trust when it comes to dogs. I also like that he addresses how to communicate with your dog outside of just training such as making sure to use complete sentences. He clearly respects how intelligent dogs are and the potential they all have to learn. I also like the touch communication section. It sets this training book apart.
I would love to see this expanded to include more commands outside of the sit, stay and come basics. May just need a follow up book!
With fun quick precise instructions the author explains how to train your dog in one minute and although this seems out of the box. The author and professional trainer explained out with the repetition and caring you can do exactly that. He gives you the tools needed the things to buy to prepare your home for training and the thing I like most is he always emphasizes loving your dog, speaking in clear full sentences and never yelling and calling your dog names. This is a great book with good and fun ideas and one I highly recommend for dog lovers and those wanting to train your dog. I want to think the author and net galley for my free arc copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

A good refresher for those who have already gone through training with their dogs. I don’t think this would be good for dogs who haven’t had any training yet as these are quick lessons that seem more suited for those who already have the basics. There are videos (I didn’t have access to these) that may make it more of a complete guide. There was more filler than training but what is there is helpful.
A great book full of little steps to train your fur babies as well as making a stronger relationship with your dog. The only thing missing is training your dog to put your socks on that’s what I need but a great book regardless.
In One-minute Dog Training by Tom Mitchell the author guides the reader through his method of using short and regular sessions to train you dog. The method makes great good sense and is appealing because it should be easy to adopt. It isn’t too much to ask of either “dog guardian” or the dog itself. The author is insistent on loving, pain-free methods. His passion for his subject comes through and gives readers confidence in him and his methods. Mitchell also mentions mistakes that he has made, which makes him more relatable. He’s obviously not an Alpha trainer! He introduces the idea of TTouch, borrowed from another animal trainer, which reinforces the bond between the dog and its owner. It is a new idea to me and one that is very appealing. I am also fully on board with the idea that good dog training starts with training the owner!
The novelty of one-minute training sessions would persuade me to buy the book, but it’s a bit of a mirage. Mitchell mentions carrying out training sessions “for a couple of minutes” - but the title says ONE minute. And he says you might need to do them several times per day. I had expected an array of interesting suggestions for these sessions, but I was disappointed. Instead he concentrates on the three key commands; sit, stay and come. In addition he looks at behavioural issues and play, which are fascinating topics.
I found the book not very well organised and somewhat repetitive. The companion website is much easier to navigate, with clearly labelled sections for puppies and older dogs, and for particular issues or solutions. The website videos, linked from the book, could also do with being more professionally produced That said, they are a good idea to illustrate how the process works, as are the case studies in the book.
I did like the knowledge panels summarising each chapter. There is an interesting insight into problem areas like biting and blending training with enjoyable activities, such as play.
In summary, One Minute Dog Training is a thought-provoking book that would be useful as a training guide for anyone taking on a puppy or older dog, and as a refresher for experienced dog owners.
Nice to read a dog training book that focuses on the dog/owner bond and training with kindness.
The book is not so much an instruction manual but rather many anecdotal stories about how kindness through training can create a magnificent bond between you and your dog and a well trained dog as a result.
Training basics are covered such as sit stay and come. The author also introduces the reader to other training concepts such as Tellington Touch.
We need more books like these leading the way. The dog training world can be murky. This book with start you on the right path to a well-trained dog. And as the title says, you don't need much time to do it.
This book is a helpful how to book on training dogs. You can see the passion the author has for dog training. The key idea is the microsessions and how you can achieve results in a small amount of time. I think the premise is a great one but the format of the book looks a bit outdated and not engaging to the reader.
1 Minute Dog Training: The Fun, Fast, & Easy Way to Train Your Perfect Dog
Tom Mitchell
Author Tom Mitchell has been professionally training dogs for over 30 years. In his book you will learn:
How to develop a positive relationship with your dog.
Effectively work with your dog in 1 minute sessions.
The three simple steps to easily train any dog.
Two or three 1-minute sessions each day shows consistency. Your dog will enjoy the attention and so will you,
Dogs are smart and can understand us when we talk to them. By speaking to your dog in full sentences you are showing him respect. He will learn from your tone of voice. Your dog wants to please you; by speaking to the dog in full sentences with a pleasant tone to your voice he will respond with respect, will learn what you mean and will go out of his way to respond to you in an obedient manner.
Three of the most important lessons you need to teach your dog are to sit, stay and come. When you first start training your dog you should hold your 1-minute sessions indoors to prevent your dog from being distracted. You will need a flat collar and harness. The collar or harness should have your family’s name and phone number embroidered on it. You may want to consider microchipping your dog. The collar and leash should only be used for short trips such as a potty break. Lengthier trips call for a harness and leash. Treats are a great motivator when you first begin your training sessions but eventually praise becomes the best motivator.
This book is written in an easy-to-understand manner. The instructions are easy to follow. Author Tom Mitchell leads readers through introducing a new dog to your household, house training, and other habits and behaviors you would like to change in your four legged child.
This is broken down into short sections that focus on different objectives / problems you might be worried about potentially if you’re thinking of bringing a new dog into your life, or if you have one that, let’s say, you’d like to change some habits of a dog you already have. I’ve had dogs almost every year of my life, and some dogs come into your life without any problems, and others… just like people, they need to realize that the world doesn’t revolve around what they want, and there are things that are absolutely necessary for them to learn if you plan on getting along.
Each of these short sections share some wisdom that may help with a particular problem you’re having, or help you avoid having that problem. Mitchell includes some examples of what to do or what to avoid, but he also makes it all seem easy because it is both faster and easier than what you would get from your typical dog school ‘class’ which is more focused on controlling your dog through specific demands, whereas Mitchell’s is focused on leading through love.
Included in the ’Endnotes’ are several links to several sites, as well, which may be helpful, in addition.

Many thanks for the ARC provided by BooksGoSocial
I liked that there are very clear step-by-step instructions with pictures for basic commands. I liked the "Action items" and "Let's Review" at the end of a chapter.
There is a bit of the psychological aspect of why dogs do what they do (or don't do) as well as human's relationship with dogs. And I liked the chapters "Is Your Dog Smart?" and "The Dog's Brain" as they went more into these details of the dog's mind/ brain.
This book seems well-researched and includes resources as well.
As a dog trainer and owner of two Goldendoodles, I was excited to read the 1 Minute Dog Training. Tom Mitchell's training program, based on repeated, short training sessions several times daily makes sense to me. Use of 1 minute sessions strengthens the human/dog relationships and takes advantage of learning theory. Dog training, according to the current research is most effective when incorporated with play and, most importantly, based on positive reinforcement. Mitchell has developed techniques and strategies that are easy to understand and follow, starting with the three training basics: sit, stay, and come. Examples from the author's training experiences make the book interesting. Other training techniques such as TTouch to increase calmness and focus,
compassionate leadership, and intentions are reviewed in an easy to follow approach.
Mitchell included discussions about the signs of aggression and important issues when selecting your dog's diet. Most essential to me is the beautiful job Tom Mitchell does reminding the reader that dogs are our friends and should be treated with respect and caring. Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read this advanced copy of 1 Minute Fog Training in exchange for my honest review.
