"Roar" by Shelley Thompson is a poignant and compelling narrative that delves into the complexities of family dynamics, identity, and acceptance. The novel, inspired by Thompson's original screenplay for the award-winning film "Dawn, Her Dad & the Tractor," explores the journey of a young trans woman named Dawn who returns to her rural Nova Scotia family farm following her mother's death.

Thompson's debut novel is a tapestry woven with threads of grief, love, and the quest for understanding. The MacInnes family is portrayed with raw authenticity, each member grappling with their own emotions and preconceptions. John Andrew, the father, and Tammy, the elder sister, are initially depicted as characters in mourning, not only for Miranda, the matriarch, but also for Donnie, the son and brother they thought they knew. Dawn's transition is a catalyst for change, challenging the family to see beyond their loss to the person Dawn has always been.

The narrative is told from multiple perspectives, allowing the reader to empathize with each character's internal struggle. Thompson's writing is both fierce and tender, reflecting her own experiences as the mother of a trans child and an activist for the trans community. The novel does not shy away from the harsh realities of bigotry and hate, yet it is imbued with a sense of hope and the possibility of reconciliation.

One of the most touching aspects of the story is the refurbishment of Miranda's old tractor by Dawn, a symbolic act that not only honors her mother's memory but also serves as a bridge between Dawn and her father. This project, along with the support of unexpected allies like Tammy's fiancé Byron, illustrates the healing power of shared endeavors and the importance of allyship.

"Roar" is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of love. It is a story that resonates deeply in today's world, reminding us of the importance of being true to oneself and the transformative power of acceptance. Shelley Thompson has crafted a novel that roars with authenticity and leaves a lasting impact on its readers.
