A lovely book looking at what happens while people sleep, going from tiny babies in cots, through childhood and into adulthood when people progress to their own bed and own bedroom.

Follows a range of families and looks at their everyday lives.

Just twenty-four hours ago I was finding a book that was a message to a child too mature for it to receive until it was too late (https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5866358388) – this, we find at the end, is a message to someone who very much was a child, a long time ago. It's a pleasantly repeating rhyme to an offspring, showing the hard if beneficial work of the parent, concerning cuisine, clothes-washing, and of course having wonderful times together, whether the baby concerned was awake or not. In worse hands this would have the feel of a brag or a complaint – "look what I did for you!" – but this is fine here, and the closing sentiments as we actually see just who is being spoken to by this verse are wonderful.

This is very different from the creator's earlier books, concerning selkies, the fairyfolk and so on, but not exactly any different in quality. There's a perfect time in the recipient's life when this would make for an ideal gift, but it would be warmly received anywhen, is my guess. A strong four stars.
