Yawn

Finished the first chapter and couldn’t go any further. Needs to be heavily edited and characters developed. Very immature writing style

While I enjoyed the story overall the characters were slightly odd and didn't quite connect with the way the author wanted readers to see them.
This wasn't the smartest romance suspense story but I found that I really did enjoy the story more than I expected.

Thank you Netgalley

Romantic suspensive, not really my thing, so I was a little sceptical going into this book, but I generally enjoyed out so I would rate it 3 out of 5 stars as I would read more from this author in future, but unfortunately the suspense part of this book just didn’t hook me so unfortunately the romance did fall a little bit flat because that category was on amazing, but I do think this was generally good read, and it is one of the better ones that I have read, so I would recommend

A bit convoluted and with so many players, it was a little difficult to follow for a newbie to her series, Risk was, nevertheless, a fun story. Campbell was a great character - a bit scarred, a hero complex who has loved Quinn, a brilliant scientist, since they were children. Quinn and her brother have developed a program that will end wars if used correctly and annihilate everyone who is in the path if used for nefarious reasons. The story starts with a bang as Quinn is kidnapped and she manages to get through to Campbell and saved. And then, they need to find the culprit who is hunting her and her brother. Campbell is part of a group of security specialists (and I have to admit, this story has made me curious about the series as a whole so good job there!) and through twists and turns, we get a happily for now. Fun, exciting with really nice romance.

Kenzie Macallan, a new writer and a new read on my list. Heading into her Deep 8 series way down the list to her fourth book “Risk”, with Campbell Creighton laying down his life for his Quinn Donovan.

With AI being the hot topic of the current world, Kenzie weaves an intriguing story around this very concept, and if we are talking about AI, then politics, conspiracies, power, money and betrayal are not far behind. With technology outspacing humans, it’s a power struggle for survival of the fastest and the richest!

Genius brother and sister duo, Liam and Quin are working on an AI nuclear weapon in a top secret location that is compromised. With her brother MIA, Quinn reaches out to her trusted friend and security specialist, Campbell Creighton for help before being kidnapped. The burden of rescue now falls on Cam and his team of special operatives, to thwart whatever the political and power plan was set in operation. And Cam will need his head in the game, if he wants to protect his heart and life, Quinn to bring her back safely.

A fairly new Indie writer in my opinion, “Risk” starts off a bit slow but gets going as we get into the fifth chapter and onwards. She has the imagination and the forte to narrate a story with a genuine plot, keeping the flow of the story interesting and making sure the chemistry among the characters is strong enough to carry the storyline.

Kenzie Macallan is an author to look out for and she’s caught enough of my attention to add her to my list.

Risk is my first Kenzie Macallan book, so I was going in kind of blind. But, it sounded like it was right up my alley-romantic suspense, espionage, and special ops.

Quinn is a brilliant scientist who, with her brother, has been working on a super secret AI weapons project. The danger of someone finding out and attempting to steal it is legitimate and there are all kinds of protocols in place to prepare of this. The book opens with the need to employ them and jumps right in to the suspense. Cam works for a special group and has had a secret crush on Quinn since they were kids. Now, he is determined to help her!  So, the plot is pretty far fetched, so if you want a realistic suspense, this isn't it. I enjoyed the story despite this. I was a bit lost at some reference to previous events, and apparently the bad guys are in each previous books (different actual bad guys but same bad guy group). Overall, Risk was a suspenseful escape read that was interesting and enjoyable.

I love Kenzie's writing and this series always pulls me in. She writes these books right up my alley that I have such a hard time finding with other authors, so I love when she puts a new book out.

Evidently this is next to the last in this series. But I wasn't lost. This is my first book for this author. I really enjoyed getting to know the main character, Campbell., and his quirky love interest, Quinn. This is a non stop adventure in the intrigue world of computer science. Lots of action. Not a lot of technical jargon. There are some steamy scenes of the unmarried couple, I did enjoy the story and skipped the steamy part
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with guidelines.

I received an arc from NetGalley and this is my honest opinion.
This book was a Must read for me and had me at every twist and turn. Lots of action and romance all entwined in a governmental or weapons of war scenario.
Definitely would recommend this book to those that love action and romance all in one. Five stars for sure!

Thank you to Kenzie Macallan, BooksGoSocial, and NetGalley for providing me with an ebook copy of Risk: A Romantic Military Suspense Novel for me to read and review. What a great story! This story kept me on my toes! It is filled with action, suspense, mystery, romance, and some spice. This was a new to me author with a writing and plot style that really reminded me of Kat Martin and I loved every page! The character personalities were written excellently with the character development and growth being so closely tied to the plot. This was one of those books I was just itching to pick back up in the moments I wasn't able to be reading. I can't wait to go back and read the other books in the series as well as Macallan's other previous books! Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a fast paced romantic, suspenseful adventure.

Risk is the latest release by Kenzie Macallan. The world as we know it maybe coming to an end, if the enemy get their hands on a groundbreaking weapon that a brother and sister duo of scientists created. Can they figure out who the deadly enemy is before it is too late? Read Risk by Kenzie Macallan to find out.
I really enjoyed reading this story. It pulled me into a world full of danger, filled with unforgettable characters, and a love story woven in. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a romance with tons of action

I hadn't read the previous books in the series but I felt like I caught up quickly. The characters are great. Campbell was a fierce alpha protector, but Quinn stole the show for me. She is complex and quirky and I was rooting for her. There is a lot of action. There's a good dose of suspense. I guessed fairly early who was the villain but it didn't take away from the story at all. The romance was both sexy and sweet. Then there was the humor I didn't expect. I loved the ending and it got me excited for the next book.

Fabulous Romantic Suspense!!

Brother and sister duo, Quinn and Liam, are brilliant technologically and on a project which may change the world. This means they are garnering much attention from the “bad guys”. When Quinn is taken from her lab, which would be impenetrable, it becomes apparent there is a mole.

Campbell was their best friend since childhood. He has been attracted to Quinn but never acted on it. Now that she leaves him a message prior to being taken, all bets are off. MBK Global Security is on the hunt, and Campbell is determined to see to her safety, personally.

Politics, betrayal, high-tech, AI and a romance which is a long time coming. A delightful array of “dad” jokes / puns break the tension as they work to finish their project and keep it out of the wrong hands.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one!

Risk is a novel that brings suspense in the classic form of scientists creating a top-secret AI program intending to save lives, only to have other parties try to steal and use that device for their gain. With enemies just one step behind them, and one step closer to getting their hands on the program, our heroes must race to uncover who is behind the attack on the lab and who is betraying them from within.

What initially caught my interest at the beginning of the book was the idea that Quinn and Liam were creating an AI that could do more than what we (the general public in the real world) initially thought AI could do/could be used for. It's both an interesting and spine-chilling thought, to be honest.

I also enjoyed the dynamic between the characters, specifically between the three musketeers, even though the camaraderie between the MI6 team gave me a few chuckle-out-loud moments. With that being said though, there were two minor speedbumps that I encountered in the first half of the book that kind of slowed down the reading process.

- Quinn and Cam's relationship felt like it was happening very fast (almost instant attraction despite the history) given the circumstances
- The info dumping/reiterating how smart the Donovan siblings are. (more so in the first half of the book, not a problem afterwards)

Aside from those minor speedbumps, I still enjoyed the book and would recommend giving it a try.

⚠️ Stay Safe, Friends: violence, death
⛰ Cliffhanger: yes?
🌶 Spice Check: Tobasco on my spice scale

Thank you, NetGalley, for providing an ARC in exchange for an honest review!

TROPES SPOTTED IN THE WILD
•friends to lovers
•protect her (literally)
•childhood friends
•best friend's sister
•private security/former military
•disabled character

SUMMARY + BASIC CHARACTER INFO AND RELATIONSHIPS
Quinn and Liam, her brother, are working on a very highly classified government project called MAGS. After their project is compromised and the situation turns deadly, former best friend to the siblings, Cam, comes in.

I felt like the characters weren't fully evolved, which took me out of the narrative too much for me to enjoy the ride. They aren't terribly written, it just felt like something was missing in the formation of them individually and in their relationships.

WHY YOU SHOULD PUSH THIS ONE UP/DOWN YOUR TBR

UP
•It's a political romantic suspense, which is not a CRAZY common sub-genre within romantic suspense!
•When things pick up, they really pick up! If you like a quicker-paced book, this is one to consider.
•Despite it also being a "Down" point, it could also be one that's a pro for you if it's your thing: the plot is a bit inception-y. With how many moving parts and details there are for the characters and the author to keep straight, it creates intrigue and interest in determining what is ironed out and what isn't. For those that really enjoy a complex story, this could be one for you!
•Because it is a politically focused romanic suspense novel, the lengths characters were willing to go to in order to further their own agendas makes for good entertainment.

DOWN
•The genius scientists just read as a little too childish and naive. Maybe that was intended, to show that scientists don't need to be rigid or cold or geeky, but in this instance, the characterization just made me not believe they're capable of great brain things.
•The plot was a little jumbled. And a little inception-y. And the character motives for doing the things they're doing was a little bit of a reach for me.
•Cam's characterization made him seem... really bad at his job? All of the little oopsies he makes and the things that go wrong with his ops just make him seem like a man I wouldn't want to hire if I was about to be killed. LOL
•The finalization of Quinn and Cam getting together was a bit anticlimactic? I think I wanted more heart and more feeling between these two who supposedly have had a long history and many bumps of misunderstanding.

OVERALL
While I didn't absolutely love and adore this or the characters, it wasn't a terrible read! It felt a little sticky and disconnected sometimes, but it was still a quick little read that passed my time well. I would also suggest to start at the beginning of this series, instead of jumping in the middle, as it has an overarching plot despite each book focusing on different couples. It's not 100% required, of course, but I recommend it because that might have fixed my issues that I had concerning the plot and characterizations.

I'd definitely still give this author another chance!

Until next time!

WOW what a story if you didn't believe that things in the world where corrupt and that AI could be scary if used the wrong way then read this book and you will be terrified After saying that it is at heart a romantic suspense with lots in the romance department. While it can be read as a stand alone it is a far better rad if read in the context of the series.

This is the story of Quinn Donovan her and her brother Liam are the geniuses behind the AI technology that everyone wants to keep them safe they always work in different labs when Quinn's lab is attacked she calls on her brothers friend Campbell Creighton. Can Campbell get to her in time can they find out who is behind the raid all while falling in love You will have to read to see but be warned this is one book that once you start it you won't want to put it own so you could have a sleepless night ahead of you

I enjoyed Quinn and Campbells story.
It was a good read with lots of action and suspense. This was my first read by this author but I will definitely be going back and checking out the rest of this series. It was well written and very enjoyable.
Many thanks to Netgalley for the chance to read and review this one.

Risk is the 4th book in the Deep 8 series and while the romance between Quinn and Cam stands alone, the underlying fight against the villains at Deep 8 is a continuation of the previous books - albeit with new villaneous representatives. The storyline is a bit too far-fetched for me and while I enjoyed the fast-paced action, I didn't really get the love and attraction vibes from the leading characters. The ending is both a HEA for the couple and a cliff-hanger for the team.
