Who knew that introducing yourself to your new neighbors and taking them a "welcome to the neighborhood" gift would result in terror and life threatening incidents? JA Baker has taken an everyday action, moving into a new neighborhood and being welcomed, into the thriller of the summer. Phoebe and Martyn have a history that Baker builds quickly into a threat every time they meet someone new, like Anna. BUT, as always, the tension can quickly shift into a different direction, maybe it's not the new neighbors causing the incidents that have moved into the community at the same time as they did. JA Baker has definitely earned a top spot on my "must read" list. If you love thrillers with lots and lots of thrills, you'll love her too.
Phoebe and her disabled husband, Martyn move to a quiet village. Their house is next to a river, the river where Phoebe's beloved sister drowned thirty eight years ago.
Anna lives across the road, and tries to make friends with Phoebe, but Phoebe is very hard to get to know.
A woman disappears in the area, and is believed to have drowned in the swollen, fast running river. Shortly afterwards, Anna goes missing during a walk on the river path. Could the disappearances be connected?
J A Baker knows how to hook the reader and keep them hooked right to the last page of the book!
Tense and chilling, I really felt for Phoebe bearing the brunt of Martyn's unpredictable temper.
However, I did understand what was going on with Martyn when Phoebe's son called her from America.
I could not put the book down until my hunch was addressed.
This is a chilling tale of mental health that was overlooked for many years.
I recommend.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is the kind of book I’d love to read using a physical copy. It’s has a storyline that will make you want to sink into it while in the comfort of your couch or bed and burrowed underneath a duvet.
Phoebe and Anna are two characters in the book anybody can relate to, until a surprising twist of events will make you think otherwise. So dive into the seemingly mundane lives of these two women who will make you grip the ends of your blanket in suspense.
Although a bit dragging in some parts, it makes up for it by showing instead of telling. A psychological thriller worth its weight in gold, it will keep you feeling lots of emotions until the very end. You will not regret ever getting your hands on this book.
This book catches your attention immediately with a suspenseful beginning. I personally had a hard time with this book because after that, the story seemed to flatline a little. It was revived at the end when we finally found out the reasoning for the "girl in the water".
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
Yet another fabulous read from this author. What a storyline and although i cottoned on what was going on fairly early it still made for a real page turner. There was no let up in the story and i struggled to take a break.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
I look forward to more books from this outstanding author.
I did think the story and plot was super interesting but I did not connect with the author’s writing style. It also felt like the story took so long to get started which wouldn’t have been an issue but then it is wrapped up so quickly and neatly it just felt like the pace was very disjointed.
I absolutely adored this book! The character development was outstanding, and the atmosphere it created was truly immersive. From the moment I started reading, I was drawn into the lives of Phoebe, Martyn, and Anna, and the tension just kept building.
The way the author slowly unraveled the mysteries surrounding these characters was brilliantly done. It had me on the edge of my seat, eagerly turning each page to uncover the truth.
I couldn't help but give this book a solid ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ rating! 📚🌟
