This book was a great read with so much mystery and second guessing throughout. There are so many untrustworthy and shitty people through this book, I felt tense every time Becky was alone with someone.
I loved the back stories of everyone and the real feel you read for the location and scenery.
I did guess the ending and was a bit disappointed by that.
Still a fun and twisty read!
I have loved Lisa halls previous books and this is no different, a bit slower to get into but stick with it!!!! Gripping and twists and turns! Excellent read!

16 years ago, Becky left her hometown on Kirton Island to escape her past, then following a call from her childhood friend, she is forced to return. The locals, however, have not forgotten her or her mistakes, and she is looked down upon by many. Despite this, Becky keeps herself occupied with investigating the disappearance of another local girl, Violet, who most assume simply ran away, but Becky believes there is something more sinister going on at Kirton Island.
There were lots of twists in this book that kept me gripped, however it felt a bit long and repetitive due to the constant mention of how disliked Becky is by everyone.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers at Joffe Books for the ARC!
Rebecca (Becky) Gannon is a known author who found herself ostracized after a mistake she made in high school with the intent to never return to the island she once called home. However, Becky's mother passes away, and she finds herself returning in order to take care of her mother's estate - and follow an inspiring story of a missing local girl named Violet.
Becky feels in her heart that something happened to this girl everyone is claiming to be a runaway. Her suspicions are confirmed when Violet's sister Ivy contacts Becky to help her find her sister. It is now Becky's mission to help find out what exactly happened to Violet and hopes to help bring her back home.
Following the story deems to be difficult has Becky's past has not been forgotten by the locals of the island, and many want her to leave and never return. Becky never gives up on finding Violet, and would do anything to help find her- and hopes to atone for her past and give Ivy some closure. Has she been within Becky's reach this whole time?
Lisa Hall, writes an excellent thriller that will take you through all sorts of twists and turns, leaving you shocked at the end of the book.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this ARC.
I really wanted to like this one but it just didn’t suck me in. Just an ok read!
A totally gripping story which really set the scene of being on the island. The characters were so real and the storyline was really taut and suspenseful.

Rebecca returns to Kirton island following her mother’s death and she has been gone for 16 years. This bothered me somewhat, she states several times her mother never forgave her for the big secret that caused her to leave the island, which takes ages to be revealed, but Rebecca never reached out to try to make amends with her own mother and later is revealed her mom couldn’t have contacted her on her own due to another mistake made by Rebecca. While she is there she decides to write about Violet a local missing teenager who most people act like she ran away, which also seemed strange to me. Her “friend” Megan isn’t really much of a friend and I found to be quite unlikeable, didn’t add much to the story for me but annoyance. Rebecca starts a romance with the neighbor Stephen while she is there and does a lot of sleuth work on her own that seemed like she needed the police but didn’t call them. I saw the bad guy from a mile away but won’t spoil anything.
Thanks to Netgalley for my advanced electronic reader copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
Thank you so much for this ARC!! Wowzxaaaaa The plot twists?! Insane. I figured one out quite quickly, I won't spoil which one, but the others, there were SOOOO many. There was so much more going on than I expected and I loved every second of it, it was a great thriller to get me out of a reading slump!
Thank you Net Galley and Joffe books for this opportunity to read The Day She Disappeared by Lisa Hall.
The Day She Disappeared is a solid 4+ Star Mystery Thriller!! From the start I was intrigued with the main character Becky coming back to the Kirton island after the death of her mother.
Becky’s history from when she last lived on the island and why she left were all mysteries well plotted in the first half of the book. I really wanted to know what did Becky do to cause her to have to leave the island and why she thought her mother didn’t forgive her for what she did.
Along with learning about Becky’s history on the island I was also intrigued with what happened to Violet the girl who disappeared a year before Becky’s arrival. At the start Becky wanted to learn about Violet because she was writing a book about missing girls. But the more she learned and the more people resisted her interference, the more Becky was determined to find Violet.
Overall The Day She Disappeared was an entertaining read. There were many surprises and twists along the way, some of which I suspected but also some I did not see coming. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I look forward to seeing what Lisa Hall brings us in future books.
The Day She Disappeared by Lisa Hall is a Mystery/Thriller that was released on 10th October 2023. I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of this book from NetGalley.
The Day She Disappeared follows Becky and her difficult journey of navigating the grief of losing her mother in an environment where she is haunted by her mistakes. Letting her journalistic instincts take over, she get drawn into the mystery of a missing girl from the island, who no one seems to be worried about it, but she can’t shake the feeling that something about her disappearance just doesn’t add up. Despite the protests of the locals, Becky refuses to leave until she gets to the bottom of it.
When I say this book rekindled my love of mystery novels, I am being 100% serious. I honestly loved this book. With mystery books I always try and figure it out before the book lays it out, and I was truly stumped with this one. I trusted no one, but couldn’t properly suspect anyone too. There were lots of twists in the story both past and present, and they truly took me by surprise. Overall, it’s a really good read and very enjoyable.
Thank you Lisa Hall, Joffe Books and NetGalley for allowing me to read this ARC e-book. This fast paced mystery drops us off at a remote island with a tight knit community full of secrets. Secrets they want to stay buried. For Becky this island she once called home but managed to escape yet she finds herself right back there working out another mystery that will make her question her past and everything she once believed up until this point... all while the missing body toll rises.
This book was difficult for me to get into at the start, but it had me completely hooked after a couple of chapters.
Rebecca is not an easy character, she's a complicated person, and I think that makes her so much more interesting to read about.
I love how we don't get bombarded with information right at the start, so we can come up with our own theories and try to figure out what's happening along with the main character.
Now these characters... You just couldn't know who to trust... Everyone seemed to have their own mystery and agenda, and no one in this book is truly innocent.
The plot twists?! Insane. I figured one out quite quickly, I won't spoil which one, but the others? There was so much more going on than I expected and I loved every second of it.
This book was great. Definitely recommend!
A little predictable this one which left me feeling frustrated at the main character who couldn't see what was blindingly obvious to me. Could have been better. My thanks to netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.

Becky returns to Kirton, the island she left 16 years ago, when her friend Megan calls to tell her that her mother is dying. While everyone clearly doesn’t want her to stay, with her mother dead, Becky decides not only to take her time going through her mother’s things, but also dig into the mysterious disappearance of a young traveler woman from the island s year ago. Everyone on the island is convinced she walked away from her life voluntarily, but Becky, who is writing her second true crime novel, isn’t so convinced. And yet more she digs, the more she’s convinced that someone is covering something up. But what? Is it related to Violet’s disappearance, or Becky’s own dark past?
The problem with proclaiming in your subtitle that there’s going to be a big, huge twist, is that going into the book, readers are primed for a big twist. And, so I figured that the “bad guy” we were being led to wasn’t the bad guy at all and, yeah, that’s all I’ll say. It was a fairly obvious twist. And there was another smaller plot point that the author put in there to shock, but it was hinted at so much, I also guessed that one.
So, I don’t know really how to rate this one. It was interesting and kept me reading, but with the twists fairly obvious and the general themes the same throughout, “No one wants you here!,” “Well, I’m staying because something’s wrong here!” etc., etc., it was probably 50 pages too long.
Don’t get me wrong. The concept was good, but the execution was maybe a little off. It was like watching a Hallmark movie. You knew what was coming from the beginning. So, if you’re ok with that, pick this one up! It’s got good bones!
But if like surprises, maybe skip it.
There were a couple twists that I didn’t expect, but also a couple I did. Internally I kept yelling at Becca wondering how she could be so blind when it felt so obvious. I won’t say what I felt was obvious because I don’t wish to ruin the plot for anyone, but if you have read the book, let me know; I’d love to discuss it!
That ending…explosive! Not what I was expecting at all and I’m still reeling from it.
A brilliant story with a very different theme to other thrillers I have read.
A gripping and addictive read…
Hall has created a well written story which has developed and likeable characters that fill the pages. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know them in this one.
There are plenty of twists on this book. They keep you guessing and on the edge throughout which I have loved. I found this unpredictable and although I tried several times to predict this - I failed each time.
I adore how the island adds an eerie and creepy vibe in this one. The setting alone is enough to send chills down your spine.
This is well paced and completely gripping. I found myself pulled in and unwilling to put this down. Which resulted in me devouring this book in just one sitting. This is a must read author, this book just ooze’s fabulousness from beginning to end.
I have no hesitation in recommending this book.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I couldn’t get on with this book. Which is a shame as I’ve loved so many books by this author. This book however lacked depth and pace. The whole premise felt a bit weak and I found myself feeling a bit bored that it was more of a ‘walk down memory lane with possible romance’ than actual crime fiction, in other words doing what was said on the back of the book. In the end I gave up and didn’t finish it.
Thanks to NetGalley for my advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
The Day She Disappeared was an excellent who-done-it. The dynamic between the main character and the other inhabitants of the island was masterfully written. Get ready for a whirlwind of emotions when reading this book. From sorrow to reconciliation to passion, this book has it all.
The Day She Disappeared by Lisa Hall.
Sixteen years ago Becky told a lie. And someone died. Now she’s back on the tiny island off the windswept Dorset coast where she grew up. The place she swore she’d never return to. She is home for her mum’s funeral.
I did enjoy this book. Little slow to begin with but I soon got into it. I did like Becky. I didn't see that coming. Gripping and twisty and tense. 5*.
Becky has returned, after a 16 year absence, to the small island of Kirton. Despite most of the island not wanting her there due to her scandalous past, she has to settle her mom’s estate. She’s also trying to write a book about Violet, a teen who went missing from the island.
In the midst of this, she’s being threatened with notes, and other strange things at her mom’s house. Since everyone but her best friend’s family seems to hate her, she has no idea who is doing this to her. She befriends her new neighbor and soon they ease into something more. When another teen goes missing she knows she has to figure out who is responsible and fast.
I was on the edge of my seat guessing what was going on. I loved this book and can’t wait to read more by Lisa Hall.
Thanks to NetGalley and Joffe Books for providing me with an advanced copy of this book.
