I usually love friends-to-lovers books, but this one fell flat for me. Sarah and Rory were a good match, and generally likable; however, the execution of the book prevented me from fully enjoying it. Initially, I was going to say that, "Since this is an ARC, perhaps it will go through some heavy editing prior to publication." It looks like it was previously published under a different name, though, so maybe this is it. I don't know. In its current state, it's not a book I'd read again.
Most of the characters were rather flat and (if I'm being honest) somewhat shallow. Rory and Sarah were justifiably the most developed, but almost everyone else essentially served as their foils. Sasha, Greg, Nigel, etc. existed only to keep the main characters away from each other. I suppose Greg also provided drama. The author attempted to give Sasha a couple of redeeming moments of depth and understanding, but both instances felt very contrary to her character. A few minor side characters (Lee, Tom, Bunny, Frankie, and Winston) were relatively believable. Doug underwent some very significant character growth throughout the book, and he turned out to be a character I appreciated.
The book included far too many points of view. From the description, the book is about Sarah and Rory; however, it's also about Rory's friend Gill and the girl he's pined after, Dinah. This isn't an issue--their story was cute, even though it was predictable. But then there are other chapters or sections from the perspectives of characters: Greg, Sasha, Annabel, Bunny, Doug, and perhaps some others. Not only did perspective sometimes shift mid-paragraph, but so much of these other sections was unnecessary and felt like filler. I didn't need to see into those other characters' heads. It didn't give me any additional insight into their characters or move the story along.
The writing style was frustrating and, quite frankly, irritating. I recognize that I speak American English and the author wrote in British English, so there will be differences between our dialects. I get that. However, there were certain aspects of the writing that felt so incredibly informal and unpolished. It relied heavily on British slang and cliched phrases, some of which was rather antiquated ("every Tom, Dick, and Harry," for example--I'm 40, and I'm not even sure I've ever heard my parents use that phrase in genuine conversation). I struggled with the incorrect grammar and usage, as well. The were frequent uses of phrases like "he was stood" when it should be "he stood" or "he was standing." (After some searching, I discovered that this is definitely a British thing, though even official British publication style guides deem it incorrect.) That's just one example. It hurt my little grammarian brain.
And finally, the ending was extremely abrupt and left me rolling my eyes. After how long it took Rory and Sarah to get to their destination, the brief resolution just didn't cut it. Even an epilogue would have been appreciated. Plus, their next steps were rushed and felt out of place, both in the plot and with their characters.
Note: Some swearing, including a handful of f words. Innuendo and sexual references. One instance of quickly-fade-t0-black sex.
I loved this book so much, I loved the fact that the story was based around a male MC, Sarah and Rory are best friends and as soon as I started this I was desperate for them to see their wonderful chemistry.. This book is a brilliant mix of romance and humour and I was sad when it ended.
*does a heart with her hands* this book was so sweet, he is a man who dates a lot and when he tries to change his bff is like no man, you don't need to change, i will show you... and they fall in love. it's so CUTEEEEEEEEE.
2.5 / 3 stars. i made it about 57% through the book before realizing it just wasn't for me. i found the beginning to be a little much for a romance novel, and thought the entire conversation to be insanely unrealistic for a small child. not to mention, the main male character rory then spends 85% of the novel acting like his father and going against the advise his mother asked him to follow. i found the plot incredibly hard to follow, which i believe might be due to the fact the plot was... well, seemingly non-existent. i'm all for friends to lovers but i thought it was executed poorly. the female main character, sarah, definitely had the most believable background and story but it didn't really go anywhere, at least in my mind. i found the other point of views that weren't the main characters to be insanely confusing and irrelevant. the story had so much but so little happening at the same time because of all the shifts.
I broadly liked the sotry and the couple and the young kid especially but I didn't know or really love the set up that good guys are the problem, obvs that is not the book's intent but it spent a lot of time on it.
Mr. Right Next Door is a cute romcom about two neighbors dealing with self acceptance and friends who support them. It is an easy light hearted read, with fun characters.
I was obsessed with this book! I couldn't stop reading it. It was so good and I had to know what happened next. Absolutely fantastic read!!

A really enjoyable book which I read in 2 days. Likeable characters and a good love story. One of those books that you lose yourself in for a few hours.
Easy, fast read. Very cute but a bit cheesy. Thank you for this arc in exchange of an honest review.
"Mr. Right Next Door" by Rachel Dove is a delightful romantic escapade that had me hooked from the first page. Dove skillfully weaves a charming narrative that combines the sweetness of budding romance with a touch of mystery. The story follows the protagonist as she navigates the uncertainties of life, love, and unexpected connections with the enigmatic Mr. Right living next door. Dove's writing is engaging, with well-crafted characters that feel like friends you've known for ages. The chemistry between the protagonists is palpable, and the gradual unfolding of their relationship keeps the reader invested and rooting for a happily ever after.
What sets "Mr. Right Next Door" apart is Dove's ability to balance romance with a hint of intrigue, creating a storyline that is both heartwarming and compelling. The small-town setting adds a cozy charm to the narrative, allowing readers to immerse themselves in the world Dove has crafted. This book is a testament to Dove's storytelling prowess, offering a satisfying blend of love, laughter, and just the right amount of mystery. For those in search of a feel-good romance with a touch of the unexpected, "Mr. Right Next Door" is a definite must-read.
I have previously read one of Ms. Dove's books and enjoyed her writing style so I did not hesitate to pick this one up and I was not disappointed. Rory has always been one of the good guys. He promised his dying mother that he would behave respectably, and not like his father who was a complete cad. Well, he's honored that promise all his life, but it hasn't really helped him in finding love. He decides that he needs to change tactics and maybe bring out his inner bad boy in order to have more success in the dating department. Sarah, his neighbor doesn't agree. She thinks he doesn't need to change to find love, but she takes him shopping and helps him get a makeover and lo and behold the girl he was interested in, Sasha, notices him. But it won't take long for Rory to realize that the true love he has been looking for has been under his nose the whole time.
Such a sweet and fun romantic comedy that was an absolute delight to read! The storyline flowed smoothly and kept my interest from start to finish. The characters were well-developed and I found myself invested in their story and rooting for them the whole way through. A very charming an enjoyable read!
I received a complimentary copy from Netgalley and Boldwood Books and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Mr. Right Next Door is an easy, fast read. I love Rory and Sarah's relationship. I love Rory's character so much and love to see the male as the main character. It was a different in a great way. I love the secondary characters as well, they were fun and relatable. So rom com's fall flat but Mr. Right Next Door was cute and funny!
Here we have a cute and easy book with the classic theme "the boy next door."
If you are looking for a cute and easy read that is a rom-com then this is the book for you especially if you like the cheesy stories and movies.
This was a cute story! I would give it roughly 3.5 stars. This was a sweet story that I enjoyed, but if you are someone that doesn't care for cheesy books, then this one isn't for you. I wouldn't say that it was a book that I couldn't put down, but it was still nice.
Was a really good story. Made me laugh. The characters and story were perfect together. Would recommend to anyone looking for an easy read.
It’s a good story and I enjoyed reading it. Chapter 6 change of focus on other characters threw me for a minute, but I persevered to see where the story was going to go
This was a fun read that sucked me in from the first chapter. I would highly recommend this when looking for a lighthearted rom-com.
This book just fell flat for me. There were a lot of characters to keep track on and the constant shifting of povs without a heading or explanation made me just very confused. The storyline wasn't that interesting to keep my interest on... It was just okey.
Mr. Right Next Door is a nice easy to read rom-com. I cried during the first few pages which I didn't expected. The author did a great job here with storytelling to evoke emotion. The rest of the story is good. Your typical friends to romance. The part that I didn't really love is that the partners throughout the book for the main characters were all so awful. It feels like is tries to change the story dynamic.
Annabel is a delight and there should have been more of her. Rory is sweet and and his friendship with Sarah is sweet to watch develop. As a side story the evolvement of Doug and his relationship with Bunny was fun and a secret that anyone could see pretty early on.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Mr. Right next door was a cute read! I enjoyed the relationship between Sarah and Rory as well as the other characters! I did feel like the ending left me wanting a lot more though.
