A new private eye team sets up in NYC and are called in to help solve an art theft. Two pieces have been stolen from a secure vault, and Holmes Marple and Po are asked to take on the case. Despite agreeing to make this their priority, they get involved a kidnapping case and a murder case. With three investigations going on at once, the action never stops.
This book was a bit different from the James Patterson books I've read before but one I enjoyed. I would happily recommend this to others.
James Patterson’s collaborations show no sign of stopping anytime soon, and Holmes, Margaret & Poe, coauthored by Brian Sitts, marks the beginning of yet another series.
Brendan Holmes, Auguste Poe, and Margaret Marple appear in New York out of nowhere and launch their detective agency with a bang by voluntarily solving a high-profile case and stealing the police department’s thunder during a press conference. They take up several cases – some unsolicited – and solve them by using unconventional methods that are not always legal. Despite the police force’s hostility towards the PIs, Detective Helene Grey realises the trio’s skill and begins to get involved with them while secretly probing into their elusive backgrounds. While the enigmatic threesome solves seemingly unsolvable crimes and grows in popularity, the law enforcement’s efforts to pull them down also intensify, building towards a showdown that could go either way.
As I have confessed many times, I am not a big fan of Patterson’s collaborations and like his solo works better. But the title of this book was interesting enough for me to try it. The protagonists are as intriguing in their characters as in their names, and their interactions among themselves and with others are amusing. Some of the supporting cast, like Helene Grey and the nearly psychic Virginia, are equally appealing. While Holmes, Marple, and Poe possess unique traits and talents that make them, together, an invincible force, they are also haunted by their own demons. But the cloak of mystery surrounding their backgrounds and their apparent access to unlimited resources is a bit off-putting. The number of cases the PIs investigate within this one book is too many, in my opinion, and the presence of unanswered questions in a few cases is not to my liking.
The narrative of Holmes, Margaret & Poe moves fast, with the short chapters and simple language one expects from Patterson, and the author duo has left a few things hanging to get the readers to pick up the next book. I would also like to read it, if only to know where the three mysterious investigators came from, and I'm undecided about sticking with the series beyond that.
I am grateful to Random House UK, Cornerstone, for the offer to read the Digital Review Copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for my unbiased review.
Another great book by James Patterson is Holmes, Marple & Poe. The first book in a series of, hopefully, lots of books!
Brendan Holmes, Margaret Marple and August Poe, brilliant names, have the best private investigation firm in New York City. A great team solving almost impossible cases but this doesn't go unnoticed. Will they maintain their high standing, and will they be able to remain solving cases?
This was another fun read by Patterson. Just like the previous book, it just doesn't disappoint at all. Great characters in a terrific story - what more could one want! Can't wait for the second book with these characters!
5/5 ⭐️
I wasn't sure what to expect but it wasn't this. Don't get me wrong....this is a fast-paced, well written thriller and I do hope there are more in this series but beware that this is not about your favorite old characters and any resemblance was probably accidental.
I was a big fan of Patterson’s Alex Cross and Women’s Murder Club book series for while and the premise for this new series and characters seemed really promising, so I was excited to see where he would go with the idea.
Unfortunately, the plot and character development felt a bit lost behind the flashy ‘James Bond’ style veneer, in which everyone is gorgeous and clever and witty and rich, and the cars and clothes and food are all fantastically showy… I just found it got boring and felt too unrealistic for me to suspend my disbelief.
Also, there were quite a lot of cases all ongoing at the same time: art theft; a missing bakery assistant; a kidnapped family; a threatened model; corrupt officials; fraud and mass murder. Without links between the cases to form an overall or cohesive narrative arc, all the individual plotlines felt a little cluttered and jumbled together.
My high hopes for the characters also fell a bit flat, as they felt somewhat caricature-ish compared to the sources they reference: Holmes is constantly ODing; Poe is romantic but maudlin; Marple is a cross between a Mary-Sue and Jamesina Bond. At least the title appears to have been tweaked now though, to Holmes, Marple and Poe, because that ‘Margaret’ in the middle was triggering me!
This isn’t a bad thriller/mystery story, but I think my hopes for it were so high that I expected more subtlety than was there? While this series isn’t for me, I will say that James Patterson still writes a good thriller story and is worth a read for those who like their P.I.s dramatic, stakes high and martinis shaken.
A new crime fighting trio blasts into New York City: Holmes, Margaret Marple, and Poe. Like their names sakes, they are sharp, witty and forces to be reckoned with. Individually brilliant, they each have a skillset that makes them a superstar trio. They can get to the bottom of crimes that entire police squads and task teams cannot. With photographic memory, vast rich knowledge, a nose for crime and strength as a team, they are superb. There is just an edge of humour, too, which makes this a fun, entertaining read, as well as a thrilling adventure. #holmesmargaretandpoe #netgalley
Holmes, Margaret, and Poe by James Patterson presents readers with a tantalizing blend of mystery, suspense, and intrigue set against the backdrop of New York City's bustling streets. At the heart of the narrative is the dynamic trio of Brendan Holmes, Margaret Marple, and Auguste Poe, who together form the most sought-after private investigation agency in the city.
As the story unfolds, Patterson masterfully weaves together a series of complex and seemingly unsolvable crimes that shed light on the darker facets of the city. From a daring art heist to a high-stakes kidnapping and a chilling unsolved murder, each case challenges Holmes, Marple, and Poe to utilize their unique skills and unconventional methods to uncover the truth.
Patterson's skilful storytelling keeps readers on the edge of their seats as they follow the detectives through the labyrinthine streets of New York City, where danger lurks around every corner and no one is who they seem to be. With its fast-paced plot, intricate twists, and richly drawn characters, Holmes, Margaret, and Poe is a gripping tale that will leave readers eagerly awaiting the next instalment in this thrilling series.
Wow a fast paced detective story, featuring three private investigators who in this book solve the crimes in New York, and set the ground work for what is hopefully a new series. Exactly what we expect from this author.
Fast paced crime solving by a formidable team of three. The mystery is intense and the crimes shocking. The characters are a diverse bunch.
I hope this is the first in a series as I thoroughly enjoyed the mysteries in this book and the three mysterious and formidable detectives.
Well done and entertaining.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
This was a fun read. The cases they are working on were interesting and full of twists and turns. I enjoyed the mystery of whether Holmes, Marple and Poe were their real names, which was teased several times throughout.
I loved this book! The relationship between Holmes, Margaret and Poe is really engaging and their approach is cases is a successful combination of recognisable and unique. The individual idiosyncrasies of each character adds so much to their relationship and makes them engaging to the reader. Highly recommended.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a DRC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Introducing a new set of characters from the James Patterson stable.
I LOVED IT !!!
Refreshing, fast paced and a tad quirky. I am hoping this will be the beginning of a new series, can't wait for the next installment !
James patterson at his best!!! I love reading books by this author. His chapters are short, sharp, concise and straight to the point. The characters are great as is the story and with the chapters being so short it made me want to read more.
Brilliant, a lot of fun and an excellent detective mystery story. I've never read James Patterson before but have had a wonderful introduction to his work. Holmes, Margaret & Poe are the names chosen by our trio of Private Investigators who have set up a new agency in New York. They all know each other but we have to get to know them and undertand their unique skill sets and what they each bring to the party. This opening adventure sees them tackle cold cases and a variety of tough criminals. I felt the characters didn't take themselves too seriously but were masters at crimesolving, were clearly only human and were completely engaging. I really hope this is the first in a series, highly recommend!
An intriguing and gripping story, I loved the characters and can't wait to read more by this author.
A fabulously written gripping story that was a pleasure to read. I would absolutely recommend this book, it was brilliant
Three private investigators form an agency, they have some unique talents and put them to use solving high profile crimes. Another entertaining story from James Patterson. They become a thorn in the side of the chief of police and the mayor as they beat NYPD to solving high profile crimes for the rich socialites of New York. A very entertaining book that finished far too quickly, Recommended.
As a self-confessed Patterson fan, I was grateful to receive an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Netgalley and have the opportunity to read it before the masses. Patterson, whether writing alone, or with a well-chosen accomplice never fails to keep the reader guessing about the journey they are about to embark on, and this novel is no different. Writing with Brian Sitts, James Patterson presents Holmes, Margaret and Poe; a book about three weird and wonderful detectives at the start of their business.
The book has an interesting opening to go with the interesting title. In fact, let us hover on the title for a moment as this was the second thing that drew me in once I discovered who the author was. Anyone with a love of crime and detective fiction has heard of the great Sherlock Holmes and his partner Watson; characters created by the British author, Arthur Conan Doyle. Then we have Agatha Christie's Miss Marple who features in an array of short stories and novels. Finally, we have the American mystery writer, Edgar Allan Poe. Seeing some well-known names from the detective genre together in the title had me wondering if there was going to be some sort of crossover novel involving these magnificent characters. Spoiler alert, these are names adopted by the three main characters, although they are hardworking, logical, wacky, and weird detectives in their own right.
The story opens with three seemingly random people turning up to an open house just as it is coming to an end. The realtor is ready to go, accepting that the event has been unsuccessful. Before long, the reader learns that these house viewers are known to each other. Soon enough, they are moving into their new premises and already hard at work solving their first case, a murder that isn’t too taxing, but has you wondering, what on earth are you going to do now that the murder has been solved in the first few chapters. You need not wonder for long though as each character has their own skills set and takes the lead on certain cases, with the others chipping in when required. The solving of the first case has them inundated with requests prompting a sense of value for money because now the reader enjoys several cases including art theft, kidnapping, and a cold case involving the murder of a young girl who once inhabited their new abode.
Full of action, mystery, intrigue, and some serious double crossing, readers are able to pit their wits and logic alongside the detectives to see if they are also able to solve a slew of crimes. I would not say the characters are like their namesakes, but they are beautifully written and distinct from one another. The story is a page turner with suspense churning, and curiosities aroused, from the beginning. The mystery around the lead characters lends itself to a follow-up. I would love to learn more about the characters and see their super sleuth skills pitted against the police in future novels. I would also like to see their relationships with each other explored in more detail because they are clearly more than just colleagues.
This novel is suited to thrill seekers and mystery lovers that are partial to a little comedy too. It will keep you guessing throughout and before you know it, you will have reached the conclusion. With its short chapters, it is so easy to tell yourself, ‘Just one more chapter,’ before you find you have lost a few hours caught up in New York crimes. This is a book that will not sit on your ‘TBR’ pile for long.
