Have not read a horror come mystery book for such a long time and hope there will be another one to follow on this one.

When Detective Maria Miller has a new case and straight away, she senses this isn’t going to be a run of the mill case. The brutality of the murder is enough to shock even an experienced detective like Maria. The killing is identical to the murder that happened 60 years before. In both cases, a satanic ritual was performed. Body parts were taken from the victims and never found.
Has the killer returned, or is this a copycat killer ?

I love a dual timeline. This was done really well. I listened to this on audio and found it an easy listen, and I flew through it in a day. I loved the supernatural element to this story, and I am looking forward to continuing this series.

The Haunting on West 10th Street is a supernatural crime thriller by Helen Phifer. We follow detective Maria Miller and her partner Franky investigating a cold case of two murders 70 years apart. As the story progresses, we are introduced to leads, well-written characters, and a storyline written in two timelines.

It has been a while since I came across a piece of work that captivated me like this. The characters, especially Maria Miller and Frankie were well-written and I found myself caring about them during the story. I normally tend to read books that are written in the first person, but the third-person point of view worked well, including the thoughts, actions, and feelings of all the active characters.

the supernatural aspect of the story worked well. I was interested in the creature that was growing throughout the story and how the result of the growth would affect the characters. However, I struggled to understand the connection between the man continuing the summoning 70 years later and who he was in relation to the brother in the original murder.

Overall, I am pleased with the experience this story gave me and I am excited to read "Her Lost Soul", the second book in the Detective Maria Miller series.

This book was definitely not what I expected it to be, but I didn't mind it all. Maria is an amazing detective and main character, and I loved being able to follow her way of thinking.

I enjoyed being able to learn about what had happened all those years ago through the POV of the characters who were there, but I definitely preferred Maria's POV over everyone else's.

This case was gruesome and though I have watched my fair share of NCIS, Bones, Criminal Minds, etc... Everything about this case gave me the ick and made me root for Maria to figure it out and find the killer.

-1 Star because I will never be able to forgive the romance in this book. He was right there, Maria! Love him!

This was a very atmospheric story, the tension and anticipation were very well described. Nice to see some older characters got to play prominent parts in the story. Some entertaining characters and the story raced to as great conclusion

Very creepy and a really good story. I enjoyed this one. A new author for me and one I will be revisiting at some point.

This is the crime thriller of the year. A detective? Paranormal activity? Horror?. I'm sold.
I love the way the author sends shivers into your spine and that plot twist??? I'm not going to forget it sooner or later.

This book is a mystery/thriller with different point of views from the characters and beautifully written. The timelines were also very well written.

I read this book in a day and I never looked back! The twist and the plot were pretty easy to identify but the different POV's kept me intrigued to see how everything was going to unfold. A couple of the characters were so unlikable that it made it hard to feel bad or connect with them in any way. I do wish that the ending would've given a little more, I wanted to know how the characters dealt with the aftermath.

Overall I give this 5 out 5 because it really was a great book and I will definitely read more from this Author. I enjoyed the thrill of the plot and its twists.

Detective Maria Miller investigates a case that is eerily similar to a brutal murder from decades ago. I liked the plot here but the writing style wasn’t my favorite!

As the title suggests, The Haunting on West 10th Street is a crime horror/thriller story intermingling supernatural experiences with thrilling crime adventures.
The book starts off by gripping you right where it hurts and chilling you to your core.

The entire time I was reading this book, I felt on-edge, always looking behind me while I read in the dark (bad idea btw).
Helen Phifer has an expertise in making you feel all the creeps while taking you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions.
The separation of timelines was masterful and added to the fun of trying to guess what will happen as a reader. The connections between the two timelines are very fluid and filled with shocking revelations. Helen did a great job at painting the picture for readers in a way that felt effortless and easy to follow along with.

I recommend this for anyone who enjoys thriller, horror, mystery, and/or crime novels. You won't regret this read.

The story is told in a dual time line from past to present and you can feel the chills on every page and soon you will be looking over your shoulder.

Helen Phifer has cleverly plotted a story that combines the paranormal, police procedure that leaves the reader caught in the horror of the story.

Keep the lights on as you read this one as once you start The Haunting on West 10th Street you wont be able to put it down.

I am excited to see where Maria and Frankie will take us next.

'The Haunting on West 10th Street' is the 1st book in the Detective Maria Miller mystery series.

Here, Detective Miller and her partner, Frankie, are called to investigate a brutal crime in the attic apartment of a Greenwich brownstone on 10th West Street.

This is similar to a crime that occurred decades earlier in the same apartment, where a beautiful actress was murdered by cutting off all her limbs and leaving only the torso for the police to find.

The detectives are puzzled, because decades have passed in between the two crimes, so surely it cannot be the same person? And if it is a copycat killer, then what is his/her motive?

There is just something off about that place, which Maria senses as soon as she goes near the apartment. Evidence of satanic rituals were found at both crime scenes, which just makes the case all the more intriguing.

A few of the people who were alive at the time of the first murder decades ago and were very involved in the case, believe that the evil that was unleashed at that time is still around, and looking to claim new victims. They're convinced that only they know how to destroy it. So you also then have a bunch of old ladies who are way too old for this sh*t forming their little Ghostbusting team to zap the evil back to hell.

This story occurs in a dual timeline, of the first murder way back when, and the second one in the present. There's also a couple of chapters thrown in from the present murderer's perspective.

I liked Maria, and also Frank, and I though their friendship/partnership was well-portrayed. I liked the supernatural element as well, because I do believe that there's a lot of stuff that is out there which law enforcement comes across, but they cannot admit it for fear of being ridiculed. Just like you couldn't admit in the past that you believed in aliens, but apparently now you can, and not as many people as before will think you're crazy.

I did not care for the love interest. I thought it was totally unnecessary and did not add anything to the story. Why do I need a rich beau whisking me away on expensive dates in the middle of an important investigation?

The paranormal elements were not investigated in depth. What was the ritual about? Just saying that the ritual was a way to summon demons who will give you 'whatever you want' is a bit obscure. What did the killers want? The first one was bonkers so we can overlook that. Crazies don't need actual motives to do anything. It all makes sense to them in in their heads.

But what about the killer in the present day? What was his history, his background? His experience with the occult? What did he want? Who hurt him, man?

We just get little glimpses of him through the book, and then at the end, we still have no answers to the questions. He's just a faceless, nameless character. Also, the way the demon was banished at the end and how easy it was...I'm sorry, but that just made me laugh.

I enjoyed it nevertheless, and I hope the depth of plot improves further in forthcoming books. I think Detective Maria Miller and her partner are going to be assigned to more cases that are 'unexplained'(The WTAF? Division, lol) in further books in this series and I want to read them, but just wish they'll be more nuanced.

This was a fantastic book. Well-written with great character development, it kept me engaged throughout. My only complaint is that I wish there had been more descriptions of the paranormal activity and less romance, but that is a personal preference (and it was not particularly heavy on the romance.)

Creepy.....a fab Hallowe'en time book to read. Can't wit for her to write more along these lines.

This book was everything I needed this Halloween season. It had the perfect mix of crime and paranormal. I gave it 4 stars because the jumping of 3 stories had me re-reading some parts at the beginning but about halfway in they all intermingled and it had me hooked!!

I look forward to reading more of Helen’s books!

This book has everything from paranormal to a side romance.

I'm not much of a paranormal reader but I found the ritual side of the book a perfect thriller.

I found although there were a lot of elements it was well written and well rounded.

This book was soooo much better than what I thought it was going to be, made me sooo happy.
There was a great Detective story along with some family dynamics, fun neighbours, a bit of romantics, witchcraft-ish (as in demon possession and a Quija board), a different timeline and a serial killer.
I really enjoyed the two main characters, Frankie and Maria, and their relationship. The story has a dual timeline; the past when an identical slaughter took place in the house, and the present day. The characters are well-developed. This is a suspenseful read that has some humour to it and def keeps your attention.
This is Book #1 of the series so the ending is great as it sets up for the rest of the series or at the very least another book.
I really enjoyed this book and the way that the author wrote. So now to see what else she writes and read them also. :)
