Mothman and his red beady eyes replaces Rudolph and his red nose to guide Santa's sleigh??? Sign me up for this quirky tale perfect for both Spooky and Christmas seasons. If you are new to Mothman, check out the Mothman Festival webpage for more fun facts on this Point Pleasant, West Virginia folklore. The book and its adorable illustrations capture the magic of Mothman for fans of all ages.
Thank you to NetGalley and 8th Circle Press for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
Do you know the mothman? Well, I didn't (except the Jeepers Creepers Version) before Andrew sent me a copy of Mothman’s Merry Crypid Christmas. I have to say that for a horror fan of this rhyming tale/song is really cute cryptid update to the much loved and highly overplayed (unless you choose to listen to the DMX version, which in my books can never be heard enough) classic Christmas song ‘Rudolph the red nose Reindeer’. This book is not a read again for me (unless it's to friends kids) because it's ages 0-4 and I don't have crotch goblins of my own. If I did, my rating may be different and have been higher, who knows) and I wish it had more imagery within. I did like the cute message that looks and rumours can be the polar opposite it what is in fact true, don't doubt yourself and believe in yourself and others will believe in you! Andrew did an amazing job making it all fit to the original tune which demonstrates his creativity and talent. I like the questions and answers to give background education at manage appropriate level at end! Thank you Andrew this was so cute and I loved the signed and personalized physical copy. If I ever have crotch goblins I will review again later from that perspective! Thanks netgalley for the ebook copy (I'm sorry I never opened)
Mothman’s Merry Cryptid Christmas - ARC review
ARC provided by NetGalley
Is this a Spooky Season book or a Christmas book?
Well that depends, is The Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween or Christmas movie? You decide, I don’t want to sway your judgment on such an important character-deciding question.
Now this book absolutely drew me in with that cover. I am a fan of silly Cryptids as is evidenced by my enjoyment of Cryptid Club by Sarah Andersen, so I just knew I had to pick this one up off of NetGalley. And right from the get go I loved the sense of humor this book is putting forth. The book proposes the partial use of Rudolf the red nosed rain deer and I found that that combined with a little bit of YMCA got the job done.
I found the art in here to be super fun. I liked its minimal color scheme and vintage feel, though at this exact moment I can’t remember exactly what vintage art style it is evoking.
This book has a very nice message too about not judging people (or Cryptids) based on apperences. And I’m not just saying that because this book is a ripoff homage to Rudolf.
And for all you Bigfoot fans don’t worry he makes a cameo, and is showing off his pride at being Hide and Seek champion of the world. Though, not to brag, I did once find Bigfoot in the mountains of Tennessee and have the photo to prove it.
I also liked the reading guide provided at the end for teachers, parents, and librarians. It’s always cool when a book had stuff like that.
Not much more to say, 15 pages is still only 15 pages after all. Pick this one up for the Cryptid loveing child in your life this holiday season.
This is a really fun book. I like that it’s a good addition to a more secular holiday celebration. It’s also a great addition to my ever growing children’s crypid books. It’s a really great homage to the og Rudolf book. We will for sure be added to our Christmas reading rotation. I especially liked the pep talk and aspiration from Bigfoot. It’s a really good example for the kids about being a supportive friend and being able to take a compliment. All in all I will be recommending this book to friends
This might be my favorite kids christmas book that has ever been written. Seriously, it was so funny and informative! We already preordered a copy for our library. I wasn't even done reading it by the time we had it in our amazon cart to buy. Seriously, I love this book. I also didn't realize this is the same author that did the Obama cozy mysteries and that just made me love this book even more. HIGHLY recommend.
As a proud West Virginian, we love our Mothman, despite the supposed trouble he brings. I loved this little tale that brings some joy to the legendary cryptid, and to myself. Well illustrated and super cute story line.
Thanks NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
This book is so stinking cute. It pays homage, as Shaffer says, to Rudolph, but now it is up to Mothman to save Christmas and guide Santa’s sled! I grew up very close to Point Pleasant so Mr. Mothman holds a special place in my heart. I think this book is adorable and gives small children just a little glimpse into Mothman lore while being a familiar Christmas story.
I think this is perfect for families who find themselves as obsessed with cryptozoology as I am. I will definitely be putting in a purchase request at my job for this!
Thiiiiiiissss isssssss sooooooo cuuuuteeeee. I love it. Thank you so much for the ARC. This was a really good read.
“If you don’t believe in yourself, why should anybody else?”
Poor Mothman, he just needs to have a little faith in himself!
I couldn’t pass up this on NetGalley even though I’m a full grown adult. But a children’s book about a cryptid is too good to resist. And this didn’t disappoint at all.
Thank you to NetGalley to having this as an ARC for all of us cryptid lovers who need a little smile. This’ll be a good one for the niece and nephews.
Super cute! My baby loved the illustrations. a fun alternative to many of the other generic Christmas stories that are out there. I loved how mothman was illustrated; I wish I could get him on a tshirt!
From its art to its story, it is adorable and festive. I love the inclusion of other cryptids. There is a handy guide to Mothman and other cryptids included in the end. This would make a worthy holiday addition to any spooky lover’s holiday reading.
Oh my goodness how funny! I read this because I thought maybe my almost 7 year old would like it. I think he will. I wanted to read it first. There is nothing scary in it and it's a great transition between Halloween and Christmas. I love how it mentions other mythical creatures like Bigfoot. I wish the book was longer. it's a little short and rushed.
My children absolutely loved this book. I absolutely loved this book. What a genius new way to tell this story. The pictures were bright and colorful and perfect for young readers. The Story was clever and easy to follow. I cannot wait to add this to out christmas book collection.
Absolutely adorably illustrated book that is short (yes even by children's books standards) but sweet.
It is, as the author writes, a homage to a well known christmas story.
All in all, a cute christmas short (very short) story for the kids and the adults to enjoy.
I love ‘Mothman’s Merry Cryptid Christmas’ it is very cute I love it 💕 I would highly recommend it. The pictures are very cute and well done 🥰
Rating: 5 Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 💕
I love the story of the Mothman and this a cute, less scary version for.kids. I also love the illustrations; they fit the story well
This is such a cute book! I didn't know I need a mothman holiday book, but this showed me I did! This was such a cute book and I can't wait to read this book this Christmas season
Mothman’s Merry Cryptid Christmas will delight more than youngsters. With its stark illustrations of a cute red-eyed mothman (a creature that allegedly haunts a West Virginia town) and its delightful prose, grown-ups will adore this picture book even more than their children. And, without spoiling the experience, I can say you’ll never look at Rudolph the same way again. Highly, highly recommended.
In the interest of full disclosure, I received this book from NetGalley and 8th Circle Press in exchange for an honest review.
Many millennial parents are into cryptids, so I think there's a definite audience for this. And the FAQ section at the back is adorable.
Mothman's Merry Cryptid Christmas is an adorable story written to the tune of "Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer." It was short, sweet, and adorable. I couldn't help but sing the entire book. The graphics were fun and I enjoyed the questions at the end of the book. I think this is a great book for kids and adults alike. It's engaging and easy to read.
