Last Summer at the Lake House is beautifully written and inspiring. It tells the story of three sisters who reunite at their summer lake house after their father dies suddenly of a heart attack. While they are there, some letters are found revealing their father's affair. They grabble with the consequences of finding out this hidden secret and whether they should reveal it to their mother. Relationships are tested as more secrets come about. This book highlights the complexities of family dynamics and reveals the dreaded and well known "skeletons in the closet" that it seems each family holds. This book will cause you to ponder and reflect well after the story is finished. A great read!

Thanks to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

A beautifully written, thought-provoking read about family and forgiveness. Each of the sisters was well-drawn and defined, and it was easy to empathise with them and their dilemmas. The setting at the lake house lent a sense of calm against the maelstrom of emotion going on in each of their lives at the revelations they had to come to terms with. It's a book that shows families are complex and it's hard to truly know someone. It made me reflect on what makes a good parent, a good partner, and a good sibling; and on how complicated relationships can be. Recommended.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC copy which I received in exchange for an honest review.

First, a thank you to Storm Publishing for allowing me to read an advance copy of Last Summer at the Lake House by Heather Dixon.

Heather Dixon’s Last Summer at the Lake House is an engaging story of three daughters confronted with their recently deceased father’s secret love affair. They struggle with whether they should tell their mother. As the story unfolds, there are tense and beautiful moments between the three sisters. Last Summer at the Lake House is a feel-good story about forgiveness that I gave 4 stars based on what I think the target audience would enjoy. Personally, I always look at the quality of writing, as well as the quality of storytelling. I felt Dixon could’ve done a much better job. There is an awful lot of telling throughout which didn’t allow me, as a reader, to think for myself. It left me skimming some sentences to get to the action or dialogue. There were also some technical issues like mixed tenses (present vs. past) within sentences, overuse or improper use of the past perfect tense, ‘had.’ I found chapter 13 confusing because it jumps back in time to the morning after a tense family dinner. There is also unnecessary added specificity. If you’re showing me someone is sad, you don’t need to follow up and tell me they were sad as well. The last two chapters petered out at the end and lacked any kind of punch. Dixon has a quality story, add in the quality writing and this novel would have been excellent. As it is, I would give it 3 stars.

This is a very good but tough read at times as the story gets to you .Three sisters who meet at the family summer house after their father dies. Wow. The story is told in chapters by the three girls. They find out a terrible secret about their father and it is how they all they deal with it. No spoilers but read it. Set in Ireland. A lovely ending and I would love to spend a summer by the lake .

This is such a bittersweet book. It ended on a very positive note, but the book was rife with tension. A family finds that they were betrayed by the one person they loved trusted the most. It causes them to question themselves and each other. It was a very poignant book. The writing was done with such sensitivity. I highly recommend this book. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced free copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.

Heather Dixon does it again. This
is my second book that i have read by this author, and she did not disappoint. The book is centered around a family lakehouse in Summerville and the sudden death of a beloved father. All three sisters return back to the lakehouse to comfort their mother who
is mourning the loss of her husband. Alex, one of the sisters, uncovers some family drama regardjng her father that has been hidden for years and years. Alex’s time is spent wondering if she really truly knew her father. Does she tell the other family members what has
been found or try to solve the mystery on her own? And how far does she take
this before she ends up hurting the ones that she loves. I give this one 4 stars. Thank you Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book.

Special thanks to NetGalley for the advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion. 'Last Summer at the Lake House' is a story that follows three sisters who return to their family lake house following the death of their father only to find a shocking secret that has been hidden over the years. The sisters each try to deal with this secret in their own ways, while dealing with their own lives. There wasn't really a whole lot to this book, it was pretty flat and never really developed into a page turner. Just ok for me.

Three sisters return to their family's summer home after their father has died. Long lost secrets about their father's secret affair affect each sister differently. I wasn't thrilled with his book, I did finish it but I probably will not recommend it.

What would you do if your parent suddenly died? What would you do if you found out that they weren’t the person you thought they were? This is a story of how 3 sisters navigate their lives immediately following the death of their father and discover something they wished they didn’t. Overall a solid read told in alternating viewpoints of the sisters.

Alex, Sam and Jess are sisters. Their father dies and they all return to the lake house to support their mum and arrange all the funeral.
A discovery is made about a secret their dad had kept as they were growing up.
This is a book about how secrets can affect relationships in the past and present.
A relatively quick read with well rounded and believable characters.

Quick read about a family dealing with secrets revealed after a parent's death. I felt the characters were realistic, the dialogue rang true to me, and I could visualize the events actually happening. I didn't get emotionally involved with the characters, but I enjoyed reading this tale. I'd read more from the author.

I received a complimentary copy of the novel from the publisher and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Alex, Sam and Jess are sisters, and are returning to their family’s summer home, after their father dies suddenly. Alex, the eldest and, in her eyes, the boss of the three, makes a devastating discovery, which causes ripples in the fabric of their relationships, with each other, their mother and how they thought of their father. This is a story of how devastating secrets can be for relationships, how they can affect your life and how we all handle grief differently.

The characters are really interesting, each with their distinct and different talents and emotions. I loved Sam, the middle daughter, , she is definitely stronger than she thinks she is, a really likeable character. Alex can be hard to like, too aware she is the eldest, wants things done her way, and who doesn’t know how she should be feeling now, but needs to find answers and explanations. And then Jess, the youngest, who has felt traumatised nearly all her life, constantly feeling nervous, worried and alone. They are an interesting mix, a proper family, who have squabbles, fall outs but still love each other despite whatever is happening to and around them. An enjoyable and emotional read.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
