I absolutely loved this book, fabulous characters (including Doris) and a twisty plot. A little touch of romance and great friendships are well written here too. A cosy mystery with teeth.
Great setting and interesting storyline. , Plenty of intrigue, twists and turns. A real murder mystery. A worthy five star read. My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my copy.
I enjoyed this read, enjoyed the characters, enjoyed the dialogue among them. I was a little slow adjusting to the writing style, but I soon clicked in. My biggest complaint about this book is the cover -- I don't think the building shown on the cover is Rookery Barn - it's not a barn at all. I had a hard time with this and I guess I need an explanation hahahaha.
Good read -- I liked it.
I received a complimentary copy of the novel from the publisher and NetGalley and am leaving a review voluntarily.
This is the first book in a new cosy mystery series. Georgina Drake has moved from London to a small rural area, buying a home with a guest house on the property. One morning, she heads over to the guest house to clean up after the obnoxious person staying there had left. Things don't go as planned. First, Georgina hears a strange voice telling her not to go in there. She thinks something is wrong with her new hearing aids so she fiddles with the app, but the voice keeps warning her off. Georgina thinks maybe she is picking up a radio station, but that doesn't seem likely, given what the voice is saying and how she's saying it. In any case, Georgina must go clean up the guest house, since the usual cleaner has been steering clear of the place after interactions with the newly departed guest. Turns out the guest, a professor at a local college, was not newly departed in the expected way. Instead of departing from the guest house, he departed from the earthly realm and was in the bed lying in a pool of what had been the contents of his stomach. Turns out that he'd made plenty of enemies even in the short time he was in the guest house as well as in his regular life, so there was no shortage of people who were not happy to see him gone. But Georgina and her friends were considered suspects and decide they need to clear their names, so the investigation ensues. At the same time, there is another mystery going on that only Georgina and the voice know about.
This was an enjoyable read. I thought the way the parallel mysteries ran throughout the book, with one solved by the end and one ongoing, was unique. The writing was good, I liked the setting, and the characters enjoyable to spend time with. I did know who the culprit was and why they did it by about the halfway point of the book, but that didn't dampen my enjoyment of the book at all. I will look forward to reading more of this series.

A young woman died there fifty years ago but hasn't communicated with anyone since. A still grieving widow with new hearing aids and grown children currently owns the property, rented the cottage out, and meets the young woman who died on the day she was born. A rather unpleasant man staying at a holiday cottage dies in a befitting manner. The DI assigned to the case learns the name of the poison used but is mystified as to how it was administered and by whom. Many questions need answers. Very nice cosy mystery with hopes of becoming a very enjoyable series.
I requested and received an EARC from Storm Publishing via NetGalley. Thank you!
I was really involved in this story as everything seemed very logical and it became a riddle to solve. Some really good characters and an excellent storyline. It was rather sad towards the end but ended on a high!
I liked this book but I just couldn't get into the story. I didn't like the writing style but overall the story was good.
I thought this book was going to be a cozy cutesy bland story! But I was pleasantly surprised! This book was fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one! This book had a bit of everything! It had suspense, Action, intrigue, mystery, revenge, murder, great who done it, great plot twist, and some crazy twists and turns! The storyline was very interesting and kept me glued to my Kindle! I definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
