Thanks to the Publisher and Netgalley for an early review copy.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
Minnie isn’t a very tall person, but she’s one that’s not to be messed with. She will try and do any job that’s wanting to be done or have a go at it.
Minnie has decided to join the ATS, and so is on her way to Chelmsford, on the way she meets other girls, some are friendly and one or two aren’t, they are Grace, Clara and Eileen, who she becomes friends with as they proceed in the training.
When others recognise what they’re good at, the girls are moved through the ranks. At the base, there’s a few men who are interested in them, but not for the right reasons.
But, for Lt Sawyer he can’t decide who interests him most.
Eileen received news that her husband Danny has been injured and as his wife she has to be there for him. So she decides to start planning for their future.
But, her husband has different plans for them and tries to forcefully make Eileen agree to his way.
I can’t wait to read what happens next in these girls lives in the next book.
I thoroughly recommend this book.
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this lovely book on a new series
minnie colton is an east end girl, with a heart of gold and she is excited about reporting for duty
on the train minnie meets up with others about to embark on the same exciting adventure and she soon makes friends with eileen, a married woman who wants to do her bit for the war as her husband is away fighting
this is a brilliant new series and i fell in love with all the characters especially minnie, i am so excited and looking forward to the next book in this series
Army Girls Reporting For Duty by Fenella J Miller is a fabulous start to a new historical series. I cannot wait for the subsequent books.
The year is 1942 as we follow four new recruits to the ATS. Three are single, one is unhappily married to a bully who is in the regular army. We witness how war actually broadened the horizons of women. There were those who preferred to join up rather than make loveless marriage alliances.
We witness the regimented life of a recruit. Having heard tales from my Dad about square bashing as he did national conscription in the RAF, after the war, it was easy for me to picture what life was like and what a shock some of the rules would be.
There is a camaraderie as the girls’ bond over mugs of tea and plates of stew. Fraternising with male members of the services was discouraged, however love will always find a way. We see the girls settle into new roles away from civilian life.
The modern reader is horrified learning about the stigma and harsh penalties attached to same sex relationships as characters have to deny who they are.
We see the importance of Whitehall in planning future campaigns.
Down time is encouraged as we follow characters to local cafes and the cinema to see new releases such as Gone With The Wind.
Army Girls Reporting For Duty is sure to be another hit for Fenella J Miller. I read it in just one sitting. I look forward to subsequent books and catching up with old friends.
I received a free copy via Rachel’s Random Resources for a blog tour. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
I loved this and can't wait for the next book in the series. The story was interesting and compelling and left me wanting to find out what happens next. I'm intrigued as to which way Minnie's story is going to and how things turn out for Eileen.
Another great book by Fennella.
As always a fantastic start to a new series, looking forward to seeing these characters mature into there roles its a 5 star from me.
What a start to a new series, just leaves you wanting more!
Minnie Walton may not be tall but she is a force to be reckoned with. If there’s a job needs doing Minnie is the one.
When Minnie decides to join the ATS and is sent to Chelmsford she is glad to meet some more girls going there, even if they are not all welcoming. However this is where she meets Grace, Clara and Eileen who become friends as they go through their training.
When their individual talents come to the fore they move through the ranks. While training some of the men at the base become interested in the females, not always with the best intentions. Lt Sawyer doesn’t seem to know which female interests him most.
When Eileen is told that her husband Danny is injured she feels it’s her duty to be by his side to care for him and starts to make plans for the future. Danny appears to have other ideas and can be quite forceful in getting his point across!
Read into the early hours in order to find out what happened next. Favourite has to be Minnie. Least favourite Danny without a doubt.
What I loved most was the humour at the start as the girls get acquainted with each other. Then the easy way the factual side is threaded through the book.
To top it off, there is another in the pipeline.
This was a great read about two girls that joined the ATS Minnie and Eileen.Minnie is from the East End and Eileen who is married.Minnie and Eileen become great friends helping each other through what happens too them along the way.Thank you to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for letting me read this book.
Thank you for the chance to read this ARC in return for my honest opinion.
I have loved the Goodwill House series by Fenella J Miller so was intrigued when I read that she was starting another wartime series.
This certainly did not disappoint. She researches her topics well and writes interesting prose that kept me interested right until the end.
Well I say till the end because for me it ended rather abruptly. I 'turned' the page expecting more and found the the first chapter of a different book.
However this in turn has just left me waiting for the next book.
This book revolves around young women joining the ATS and how their early days are formed.
There are new relationships and ones that fall apart and also in many ways forbidden ones for the times.
But there are also openings for future books in the series which is always great - specially when it means that one looks forward to new titles.
Thank you for an excellent read
Another great book from Fenella J Miller and I can’t wait for the next one in this new series. I absolutely love her style of writing and the depth of historical knowledge. This is a subject about World War Two that I’ve not read much about fiction wise and I was not disappointed. Minnie and Eileen are the main characters and both have different reasons for joining the ATS. We find out more about their lives, and those of the other characters, as the book progresses. The characters in this are so well thought out and by the end of the book I felt like I really knew them! There were various topics covered in this and many emotions explored. Thank you to Boldwood Books and Netgalley for the ARC
I usually only read Navy or R.A.F war books however because this was a Fenella Miller book I decided to give it a go and I'm so glad I did. It's a really interesting book that gives you an insight into life as an Army Girl in the war and the battles they had to face both in their work life and personal life. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series
I have learned a lot about the women supporting the war effort by reading Army Girls: Reporting for Duty. I had known that there were a lot different programs available to the women. Until Army Girls, Reporting For Duty I was absolutely clueless to what it entailed. Until this book I had thought it was strictly volunteer.
I didn't know that women began to be conscripted in 1942. At least the women had choices including the women's division of the army known as the ATS, Auxiliary Territorial Service. Those that joined the ATS had strict protocols to learn during a four week training period. Protocols I had never considered until now. It must have been quite a shock to many of them. I am still in shock as I dive deep into researching what I have learned from this story. Thank you Fenella J. Miller for lighting the fire under my curiosity.
The story follows four girls as they begin their ATS adventure. The reader is soon reminded that the women came from all walks of life. The reader gets to see how they adapt to a new life and how it affects them. Their lives were so different before beginning their training, now they would be housed in barracks with 24 beds and very little room. How did one adapt to new ways like bath day schedules, latrines without ablutions, every minute of your day dictated by others?
I found Army Girls: Reporting for Duty to be a very enjoyable story. There were lots of adventures, taking the girls to different places, giving me a glimpse into the region during WW2. The Chelmsford I know is so different to the one they visited. I can't begin to imagine traveling by train in a region you don't know and there are no names at the stations. The women were so brave, so determined.
I loved watching the characters grow, adapt and mature. They experienced many challenges. Reading about their training was interesting. But what I found even more interesting was what had to be done in the beginning, before training began. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to strip in front of strangers. I couldn't imagine just following along, not knowing what was going to happen next. Now I can.
The story isn't just about their training. The story shows the emotional struggles many of the trainees could have gone through. There is love. There is jealousy. There is friendship. There is good and there is bad. The story was real life during the war. The story shows how women from different social economic backgrounds can unite for a common cause. The story shows what an important part members of the ATS in the war effort. Reading this book gives an understanding I didn't have before.
Like most of her books, this will undoubtedly be a series. A good look into times past, and gives one the chance to be truly grateful one was not a woman then, it also gives pause for traditions which are not observed today. I enjoyed the book. And most of the characters. I will read the next one. It ends quite abruptly with no loose ends tied up. So onward to the next one.
Love Fenella J Miller's books - she writes such lovely stories and this one lived up to all my expectations.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review.
An easy and enjoyable read. I found some parts of the story enjoyable and some not so. The book started with 4 girls meeting on a train but then focuses on just 2 girls which I found strange. I felt I spent time getting to know 2 characters only for them to disappear! I found a couple of the storylines somewhat unbelievable although I brushed over them and continued with the book.
I assume this is the start of a new series and will happily look to read the next installment.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishing team for giving me access to the pre-release copy.
After reading all the books by this author I was really looking forward to this one. Sadly I found it to be hard to get into and the story just seemed to drag on, im glad I persevered as I did enjoy it in the end, but not as much as the land girls stories.
You know when you read a book n n still think about the characters hours after. Well yes, this is it... Fabulous start to what's bound to be a fantastic series... I can't wait to read more
A fast paced ww2 drama. In this book we follow 4 (well mainly) women from different walks of life. It was great getting to know them, to get to know their strength and their weak sides. A Great way to start a new series
Thank you to netgalley for letting me read this e arc in exchange for an honest opinion
Army Girls: Reporting For Duty is what I've come to expect from author Fenella J. Miller, intriguing, snappy and fun. My favourite aspect of this book, the first in a new series which takes place during World War II, is the historical information from the clothing details to food to vaccines. Though predictable, the story is well worth reading. As always, there is also romance.
Four young girls had their own reasons for joining the Auxiliary Territorial Service. Minnie, Eileen, Grace and Clara have a bit of a rocky start at the beginning of their train journey. But they soon become fast friends as they go through mental and physical training at the base. Rules are rigid, training is grueling and grief is a reality but the girls remain loyal in their own ways. Some soldiers view the women as inferior, unfortunately. But thankfully there are men who treat women as equals. As the characters become wiser through life during the war, they change and grow. In this instalment much of the focus is on Minnie and Eileen.
If you seek a series to engage you from the first page, do add this to your list.
My sincere thank you to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for providing me with a digital copy of this compelling novel. I look forward to see what happens with the characters as the series progresses!
A fast paced, wartime drama filled with romance, friendship and the strength in war. Fenella really has the ability to bring a bit of history to life and following our ATS girls in this made for a great read.
Each of our characters, Minnie, Eileen, Grace and Clara each being their own element to the story. With a focus on Eileen and Minnie, we follow these girls as they establish themselves within the ranks of the ATS and find their feet doing their bit for the war.
Handsome officers, difficult training and with dangers a plenty, there’s much to keep you reading. I’ve been reading more and more of this authors books lately and they all have a common theme; they’re all super easy and fun to read. They transport you back into history for a bit and get you rooting for the girls as they navigate their stories.
There’s plenty of drama and action to keep you reading and I always looked forward to going back to read this book.
I read a fair amount of wartime fiction but haven’t read that much about the ATS girls so it was great to learn more about them. It was a really enjoyable book and I always look forward to seeing what Fenella will bring out next!
