I'm a sucker for anything set in Upstate New York, so I was drawn to this book. It's set around Sleepy Hollow in the Hudson Valley. It started out strong for me and then I guess when I figured out who did it, My main problem was that I didn't care enough about Nick or Victoria to really care what happened to either of them and once I had a good idea of who did it, but not necessarily why, it just became about finishing the book for me. I have seen other reviewers that absolutely loved it, so different strokes, I guess!
Thank you, NetGalley, for the chance to read and review this book. All opinions are mine and freely given.
A police procedural thriller, very character driven. Definitely an impressive debut novel, you don't have to think too much and it passes the time.
This was a gripping who-done-it murder mystery.
I really enjoyed the main character and the writing of her emotions as the was struggling with an affair and trying to clear her name and her husbands name.
Killer Motives has a compelling plot with all the betrayal, twists, turns and surprises that makes for a good mystery. I truly enjoyed this one and it was an interesting fast read .
Thank you NetGalley for this advance reader copy for my honest and free review. Honestly,Mathis wasn’t a bad story, but there are a lot of conflicting emotions from one page to the next that drove me crazy. A bit far fetched at times, but I stuck it out and finished. Not bad, but not one I would want to read again.
Started off strong, good finish plot-wise but the characters weren't well developed. Thanks to Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book
A very character based thriller, although there were multiple plot threads weaved throughout. Its atmospheric and the writing was decent. Its not the most original storyline and with the characters being rather vile and not having much character development throughout, it left the book feeling a bit lacking. Even the poloce proceedural side of it felt a bit half hearted. If you don't think too much then it's fine for a surface level thriller to pass the time. It's not that there's anything particularly bad about the book, it was just a bit meh!
When your life is, seemingly, perfect but then it goes a bit wrong….. Victoria was born into an affluent family and is happily married and trying for a baby. She then discovered that, not only is her husband having an affair but he’s also suddenly very much in the frame for murder when the woman he’s been seeing is found dead in the house she bought from him in his capacity as an estate agent.
The plot doesn’t really progress much beyond the above summary for the first quarter or so and is a bit of a slow burner for me. The subsequent discovery of secrets from the past and the will she / won’t she forgive him saga is a bit flimsy for me as is the question of her husband’s guilt.
There is a bit of a change of pace towards the end and I few, almost, twists which made it more exciting. The overall premise is fairly good if slightly naggingly lacking in something I can’t quite put my finger on. Nether the less a decent read and definitely worth a go.
I recently read Bonnie Traymore's suspenseful thriller, "Killer Motives: A Hudson Valley Mystery," and I must say, it was a rollercoaster of emotions, twists, and revelations. Set in the picturesque village of Tarrytown amidst the annual Halloween festivities, the story surrounds Victoria, a wife grappling with her husband's infidelity. She is thrust into a high-profile murder investigation when her husband's lover is found dead. Traymore effortlessly weaved a tale steeped in mystery, angst, and tension, compelling me to turn the pages as Victoria, conflicted and raw, navigates through a myriad of suspects and 'killer motives,' seeking the truth while dealing with her crumbling marriage. The atmospheric setting and the impending influx of tourists add another layer to the suspense, making the plot even more intriguing.
The character development and the portrayal of emotions were remarkably vivid, making me sympathize with Victoria and her turmoil. Traymore's ability to combine a fast-paced plot, complex characters, and psychological depth made the book more than a regular murder mystery. The intricate relationships, betrayals, and secrets unveiled as the story progressed kept me on my toes, questioning the true motives of each character introduced. I found Traymore's writing style captivating, and the suspenseful atmosphere she created lingered with me long after I finished the book. The book was a thrilling exploration of human emotions and the darker aspects of relationships, making it a must-read for fans of intense psychological thrillers. An impressive debut novel that touches on important social issues such as class and gender, but all in service of a fast-paced thriller read.

An interesting police procedural full of suspense. A recommended read.
A compelling read, with multiple plot threads coalescing, leaving the reader guessing until the very last moment.

Tarrytown is a place better known for its Halloween festivities and picturesque pumpkin carvings than brutal murders. That was always how it seemed to Victoria, secure in her marriage to Nick and her comfortable lifestyle, until death showed up on her doorstep.
Now she has to think fast to figure what is going on. Not only has her realtor husband been having an affair with a client, as Victoria discovered after following him, now his lover has been killed. Right after Victoria herself found out about the affair! There are implications here nobody could miss.
Both potential suspects with killer motives, Victoria now also has to deal with the possibility that her husband, who has been arrested, actually killed his lover. Because the alternative is as mysterious as it is likely to be complicated.
For reasons of her own, Victoria decides to try and find out what actually happened. That is, of course, also what detectives Stark and Sanchez, who arrested Nick, want to know. And they are professionals, so what are Victoria's chances of discovering anything that they miss? The police are under pressure to solve the case, and that makes it likelier that mistakes may be made...
Despite the atmospheric setting, and a promising start to the mystery, it felt like there wasn't sufficient character development in this story. As a result, it was hard to care about any of the characters. Especially Victoria and Nick, both of whom were self absorbed and not particularly likeable.
Of course, characters in a story don't have to be likeable in order for a book to be enjoyed by a reader, but there didn't seem to be a sufficiently strong plot or skilled enough storytelling here to compensate for that. Overall, it was ok, but not great.
Victoria suspects her husband of having an affair and follows him one evening, and sees him kissing the woman and she photographs him.
The next day, she discovers that the woman has been brutally murdered, and cannot help but suspect Nick of murder.
Detectives Jack Stark and Lexi Sanchez are on the case and arrest Nick.
Victoria decides to stand by her man and find evidence to exonerate him.
I truly expected this to be a gripping, edge of the seat novel, but it was quite 'bleh' for me. The investigation seemed half hearted, the detectives went for the person who was last to see the victim.
I didn't like any of the characters, not that there was much character development, and the detectives seemed to be hacks.
Sorry, cannot recommend.
