"Never Ever Getting Back Together" is a title that tells you that the two characters will most definitely get together.
A second chance romance sprouts out of a chance encounter years later. It was a quick, cute story albeit too predictable in more ways than just the title. I am still interested in reading more by Phoebe MacLeod though.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC.
The heroine is depicted as immature and overly dramatic, failing to show growth. They had awkward interactions and just were not good overall. Her daughter's presence seems disconnected from the main plot. Overall, there are forced conflicts and that just made it not so great for me to read.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me with this book.
Phoebe is a fantastic author, her books really give that feel good feeling, I always finish her books with a smile on my face. A great holiday read or one if you are just in the mood to get lost in a book to forget everything that is going on.
For the moment I have found myself mostly in the romance era so based on the description of the book I thought this would be a perfect fit for me but it ended up being an okay read. It wasn't a bad read but it wasn't my best read either so I would actually like to recommend it for those that want a quick romance book with the Second Chance trope.
The thing with that this being an okay read is because I felt like I missed something between the MCs:/.
Lately I have been in the mood for Second Chance Romances and this book definitely fit that need. This was a very quick moving rom com that has, at its heart, a deeper and slightly darker connection between the two leads than I would thought. Jess has never gotten over her love who was also her first lover and when he comes.back into her life she is still trying to mess reconcile how to move on. Jamie is the one that got away and he he is now back in her world with his own baggage to sort out.
I enjoyed this, but there was something missing between Jess and Jamie that I couldn't quite put my finger on. I wish the book would have had a little more to the resolution but the writing was strong and I loved the dialogue that was used and how that moved the story forward.
Thank you Goodwood and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read this book. All ideas are my own and volunteered to read this book.
It was a light and easy read.
Thank you NetGalley for my complimentary copy in return for my honest review.
This wasn't for me. There wasn't enough of a connection between the two leads built for me to be invested in this story
Jess's early friendship with Janie has influenced her all her life, especially how things were left between them. You can see that she has thrown herself into building up her business and as a business woman, she is very competent and astute. It is her business which brings her back into contact with Jamie. They both have matured a great deal. At times, this is a laugh out loud romcom, with some genuinely funny moments, especially when Jess is trying to fool Jamie.
Jess's family and friends provide some humour and they ground her, offering some common sense views. There is romance at the centre of the story, although it seems there is more to Jamie's back story than you first guess. As Jess has to learn to trust, you are drawn into her feelgood story and willing her to take a risk.
In short: Secomd chance romance
Never Ever Getting Back Together is a thoroughly enjoyable light-hearted read, this story drew me in and the fact it felt real and the characters were so relatable meant I didn’t put this down until I’d finished. I enjoyed the fact that the humour was very well balanced alongside with the more sensitive issues, it is very entertaining, full of drama, humour and of course romance.
I loved Jess so much, such a fantastic character I couldn’t help but love her from the beginning, the type of characters you wish was real so you could have a natter too, she so deserves a HEA, will she get one ? well you will have to read it yourself to find out ! This was a fantastic read, it flows so easily, it’s like joining in a conversation and being with old friends, I love a book that makes me feel that way.
If you are looking for a book that you can fall into, won’t want to leave, a book that is full of laugh out loud moments and plenty of romance then this book is for you, it was for me.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Pulled me in very quickly which I need in a book as I have a short attention span. Absolutely loved it and loved the ending too!
*I received a free copy of this ebook from the publisher; the review is my honest opinion.*
I've been in such a mood for rom-coms lately. This one sounded cute, but I didn't end up enjoying it as much as I had hoped. There are certain things that, had I known about them ahead of time, would have made me hesitate before requesting the book. (See Notes.)
One thing that made it difficult for me to really get into the book was the dialogue. It's not that the dialogue itself was unrealistic or felt forced--it was actually pretty good on both of those points. But there would be pages of nothing but dialogue, not even dialogue tags or little bits of narration to describe what was happening or what the characters were doing. It was confusing to keep track of who was speaking. On top of that, it felt like there were just voices from the void rather than actual people.
Jess (28) and Jamie (28) were fine characters, though I didn't love either of them. To be honest, I think I had a harder time moving past the Jamie of the prologue than Jess did. That encounter also colored my opinion of her, though. I know they each experience growth since they were 16--it is evident in their current lives and choices. But I wondered several times if omitting that whole chapter and then filling in a summary of what happened at a later time would have been more effective. Honestly, that whole first chapter made me think Jess was a naive idiot and Jamie was a sleazy opportunist. The two of them had sex in an off-limits master bathroom at a party immediately after Jamie had broken up with his girlfriend. (This isn't a spoiler--it happens early on.) That event was rather distasteful.
In the end, the overall story was cute. However, I'm not sure I'll dive into another book by this author.
Notes: Swearing, including a bunch of f words. Lots of talk about sex; though it doesn't happen on the page (thankfully), there's some fade-to-black and some aftermath. Lots of joking about pornography, treating it as if it's an acceptable thing that all normal people do.
I am sure, like many readers, a bit of Taylor Swift was running around their heads whilst reading this book. Not necessarily a bad thing, that girl can do no wrong! In fact, both this book and Tay-tay were just what I needed for my reading: a straight-forward romance with little complications.
In this story, the theme is reconnecting with your first love. Except for Jess, Jamie never knew her feelings for him and a magical night ten years ago ended abruptly, leaving Jess hating this first love forever more. So when she recognises Jamie at a wedding she is catering for, Jess is determined to escape unscathed: not rekindle any friendship and certainly not spend any time with him. But fate has other plans…
Although you can predict how this story will unfold, I liked seeing Jess and Jamie’s relationship rekindle. It becomes clear that there is something special between this couple but Jess is determined not to get hurt again. Being a business owner, she has used this excuse for remaining single for so long and her friends see that Jamie is just what she needs. Her attempts at dating men that aren’t Jamie were entertaining and I really sympathised with her first date – what a yawn fest!
There is more to Jamie’s character than his fancy car salesman role and I liked how the writer developed his background, adding a further layer to his connection with Jess. I found this aspect to be surprising and it made the plot more enjoyable as a result.
An entertaining, light-hearted story, this is one that you can easily escape into without feeling the pressures of daily life. It is a quick read and I enjoyed reading about all of the characters, especially Jess’s banter with her sister. Jess has been hurt by her first love and I think some of her feelings are ones that readers will relate to. I found myself rooting for Jess and Jamie, wanting them to find happiness after ten years of separation.
With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
The heroine turned out to be immature, whiny, and just too much... I get she was meant to be sympathetic and down on her luck in love, but at some point after she explains what happened with Jamie, it just becomes too much, like she's not a teenager anymore and she's supposed to have grown up...but there's no showing us that she has grown. She's still whiny and ranting like a teenager in a sulk, which put me off the read.
thank you to netgalley for the advanced reading copy. I really enjoyed this and will be getting copies for my shop.
I cant get this song out of my head now! What I did enjoy about this book was the chemistry between the characters. The only thing I didnt like was the relationship happened too fast.
I had this read in one sitting, genuinely adored this quick and easy read and would have loved for it to be longer!
It was such a good read, i requested it for the title, and i was surprised to read it because it was worth the hype i gave to a book that shares title with a taylor swift song.
The story begins with captivating banter and flirting, drawing the reader in with its entertaining narrative. Jess, the independent protagonist, encounters her first love, Jamie, at a wedding after 12 years of resentment. Despite their initial awkward encounter, Jess begins to see a different side of Jamie, leading to a reevaluation of their past misunderstandings. However, the story takes a downturn when Jess's negative opinion of Jamie is reinforced by a misunderstanding, which feels like a forced addition to the plot. Despite the adorable presence of Jess's child, Lizzie, her role in the story seems disconnected from the main narrative. Overall, while the initial charm of the story is engaging, the latter part is marred by contrived conflicts and character inconsistencies.
Love the title.
A fun easy going and predictable romance so if that’s what you’re looking for then this will fill that need. The characters development feels slightly underdeveloped which stops it from becoming one of the romances I will reread again and again but I had a good time none the less.
I absolutely adored this romance. It was so fun and lighthearted and just all around good time and great read! I loved this!!
