Goodness, I really don't know what to say. I could not put this down! So much action and mystery. Secrets. Surprises. If you want to read a story that will have you biting your nails while on the edge of your seat, this is it! Kendra Elliot's books just get better and better. I was hooked from the very first sentence.
Twenty years ago five friends went camping but only two were found. One was dead and the other barely alive. Devin has no memory after his graduation. A body is discovered the exact way Devin and his friend were found, throat slit and hands tied. Now the police are reopening the twenty year old case.
Mercy is FBI and is investigating a shooting at a substation. She gets called about a body found near the Columbia River. Her husband, Truman Chief of police, is called about a missing husband that his ward, Ollie called in. A woman flagged him down to use his phone. Turns out the dead man, a podcaster, was investigating the missing campers. When Mercy and Thurman discover their cases are connected, they all began looking into it because it seems someone knows something about the missing teenagers and the dead bodies.

Surprises throughout this latest in the Columbia River series. A current day murder that as the investigation progress ties it to unsolved disappearances and murder from 20 years ago. For every thread pulled it unraveled another and you were captivated with each one. The author did a great job of keeping you on the edge of your seat wondering where all the threads were going to lead to and ultimately find out what really happened 20 years ago.

I have read several of Kendra Elliott's books before, including - oddly enough - the first couple of books in this series about FBI agent Mercy Kilpatrick. So, when I saw that there was an opportunity to read and review this story, I jumped at the chance.

Elliott has done a great job of creating memorable characters in her series about a small town in Oregon named Eagle's Nest, its quirky inhabitants, and its resident FBI agent, Mercy.

The latter's family history is an unusual one for a law enforcement officer, and the earlier books introduced us to Mercy's family members, many of whom are Preppers and most of whom are not positively inclined towards public officials of any stripe, particularly police and law enforcement.

Mercy's marriage to local policeman Truman Daly, and their nuclear family - consisting of her brother's orphaned daughter Kaylie, and Ollie, a boy who saved Truman's life on one occasion - has given her the joy and stability that she lacked for many years.

In this latest installment of the story, the couple, together with Ollie, become embroiled in a cold case that has heated up thanks to the recent murder of an online conspiracy theorist.

In a spot where two missing teenagers were found years ago - one dead, and the other barely alive and suffering from amnesia - an sensationalist podcaster interested in investigating the case is found brutally murdered. Of the five kids who went missing on their camping trip so long ago, three were never found.

The murdered man's missing vehicle is also found abandoned near the property of the survivor from the earlier case, which hardly seems likely to be a coincidence. So what is actually going on here?

Elliott's writing flows smoothly, and this book is an easy read. Her characters are both likeable and relatable, and the number of strong female characters she features in various law enforcement roles is impressive. Recommended if you're looking for an interesting series with memorable characters - because Mercy Kilpatrick is nothing if not memorable!
