One of the best memoirs I have read in recent years. I found it constantly amusing and poignant. I love the attention to detail, not only in Carrie's story, but her memories of friends, pupils and work colleagues as well.
I lost count of how many countries Carrie has taught in, on top of which there are numerous other countries she has visited as a tourist. There's plenty of recollections of these far flung places, and also a real feel for the period, with the book spanning several decades.
I love Carrie's honesty and her ability to see the funny side of life. There's plenty of detail about different cultures, and different ways of life, as the author has an active social life with pupils, friends and colleagues across the globe.
An absolute pleasure to read and a book I am happy to recommend to others.

Carrie Evans' personal experiences growing up in the UK with some memorable teachers (for all the wrong reasons, as well as the right ones!) undoubtedly contributed to her decision to become one! Perhaps to show them how it could be done right...?

Be that as it may, this book is a loose collection of Carrie's memories from having taught English as a second language in different parts of the world. She takes us to far-flung locations and some very diverse cultures, but the experience is definitely filtered through her very personal lens, so should perhaps occasionally be taken with a pinch of salt...

Overall, it is an entertaining read, though I think I would have preferred a more organised chronological approach to the layout of the book. This gets 3.5 stars.

A trip down memory lane with the author as she recounts the details of several decades spent traveling around the world and teaching English as a foreign language in search of the unobtainable “perfect” job. This memoir is for people who like books that read more as a detailed personal travel journal than a collection of reflective stories. The author shares her personal thoughts on lots of countries with an often uneven focus on negative experiences (despite the title of this book).

What I liked best:
It was great to get some insight into what TEFL looks like in different regions / countries around the world.

My rating:
This memoir style didn’t work for me (too focused on details rather than reflection) but if it looks interesting to you I encourage you to give it a try.

This memoir was like a trip around the world. I love how descriptive Evans's story is. I got lost in the far off places they visited. It was interesting to read. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. Five stars.
