There Was a Young Reindeer Who Swallowed a Present is a fun, rhyming children's story about a reindeer who can't stop eating different items and is rhymed along to the 'There was an old lady who Swallowed a fly' rhyme. The story is fun and engaging to read and the illustrations are even more fun. Children will delight at all the silly things the Reindeer eats throughout the story.
The repetition of the rhyme is simple and easy to catch the hang of making it easy for little ones to join in as you read along.
Keeping the mood light-hearted, There Was A Young Reindeer Who Swallowed A Present offers another dose of festive fun. Based on the well-known rhyme, There Was An Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly, this is the Christmassy version - although there is also an Easter and Halloween one as well!
There was a young reindeer who swallowed a present. Did it fill them up? Obviously not because they then go on to swallow a elf, a bauble and a tree. Surely they won't swallow Santa himself..?
Nothing screams fun more than cumulative rhyme and this treat of a book has all the joyfulness of the original version. The illustrations from Diane Ewen are a delight, adding in lots of brilliant detail AND an extra layer of adorability to the narrative - just look at those reindeer's butter-wouldn't-melt eyes! There's mounting tension as the story progresses and little ones will be turning the pages faster than this reindeer can gobble things up to see how the story ends. No spoilers here though! You'll have to find out for yourselves.
"Everyone's heard about the old lady who swallowed a fly, but now it’s time to meet a little reindeer who, on the most important night of the year (Christmas Eve!), swallows a present. And he doesn't stop there! Soon he's gobbled down an elf, a bauble, a tree . . . what will he swallow next?"
Well I can tell you... After the tree came the stocking, House, Sleigh and Santa!!
This was a brilliant rhyming book, full of great illustrations and laugh out loud moments as we follow the cute reindeer on his colourful way muching through Christmas, and the lesson at the end of each verse is "how very unpleasant". This continues until the end which is also unpleasant for the poor full up reindeer.
My grandchildren aged 3 and 5 loved it and I had to read it several times before they stopped laughing and were ready for bed. A great gift for children to be read again and again.
A pretty decent example of those building rhymes, where the verses just get longer and longer due to the added details each page. Here we get a seasonal variant on the old person who swallowed a fly, because our naughty reindeer has swallowed a present, and that’s followed up with an elf, a bauble, a whole Christmas tree – and more, until the unlikely but explosive ending. Now hold on, though, it’s all pretty damn implausible – so please just ignore my mistake and say this is not bad at all, for the young audiences it’s intended for, if not for many older people. It’s a very colourful bit of daftness, and first time round at least would be fine for sharing with the ‘what’s next?!’ questions to be eagerly answered. It’s no classic, but it would make sense to have it on standby in libraries for all the seasonal selections – just make sure it doesn’t start coming back from a loan with bite marks. All told, four stars is probably the closest.
A Christmas themed version of the old woman who swallowed a fly. I can see this book coming out each Christmas and being a favourite family read. All the Christmas items including Santa have to come back out somehow and I think children will find this funny! Lovely illustrations too.
A very funny book about a reindeer causing all kinds of problems at Christmas. Very funny, along the lines of The Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly and great to get the children joining in with the words.
Everyone knows about the old woman who swallowed a fly, well this is a seasonal update on the rhyme and is sure to have children in giggles. Another great story to get everyone into the festive spirit.
This is a delightful Christmas story, along the lines of The Old Woman Who Followed a Fly. The illustrations are just adorable.
The story is about a young reindeer who's wreaking havoc by swallowing all kinds of things - including, eventually, Santa himself!
While there are reasons given for all of this, it does nevertheless beg the question of whether any Christmas item should really be swallowed other than Christmas cake...?
The cumulative rhyming element allows for noisy participation from excited youngsters, so that should go down well with them. As will the burping, no doubt. Plus there's always the option to end the experience with a bit of cake for everyone.
Thank you so much to Macmillan Children’s Books and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.
A Christmas take on the woman who swallowed a fly story. In this hilarious story we follow a reindeer who won’t stop eating the most peculiar items from around the North Pole, until they can eat no more.
I absolutely adored this book, it was such a fun story, the reindeer himself was just so funny, he found the most odd things to eat, the whole story was hilarious and kept making me laugh, seeing what he was going to eat next, I never had a clue what it was it was going to be. I really enjoyed reading this book.
This is a perfect Christmas book, the illustrations are absolutely stunning on each page and there is so much to look at everywhere not just at what our reindeer friend is doing. We have a repetitive story that means you can teach it to young children easily and they’ll absolutely adore it, it’s very funny. A great read for the holiday season.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Children's Books for this eCopy to review
Nothing says Christmas like new Christmas picture books. This was super funny, about a naughty reindeer who eats all sorts of Christmas items. The pictures are very bright and colourful and very funny. The text is to the rhyme of there was an old woman who swallowed a fly so it reads out loud very well. Queue lots of giggles when they all burp
Great fun and a great Christmas addition to anyone's picture book collection
A funny and beautifully illustrated book to read together with small children in the run up to Christmas. The Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly meets The Dinosaur Who... series in an entertaining story with great rhymes and lines for children to shout out, combined with pictures that offer lots to look for and enjoy. A lovely book.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy in return for an honest review.

Kaye Baillie has created a wonderful festive read for children 4-7. With a nod to the There was an old lady who Swallowed a Fly, this story focuses upon a somewhat greedy Reindeer who proceeds to digest a selection of festive items
The prose is excellent and builds up a wonderful rhythm if read aloud. This is the perfect Christmas book to be read at bedtime or with a class of KS1 children. The vocabulary is quite tongue twisting at times but that adds to the fun.
Diane Ewen's illustrations are gloriously colourful and full of humour- plenty to talk about when looking at the pictures.
This deserves to be a festive classic- it's colourful , fun to read and will produce lots of curiosity and laughter with young readers and listeners- especially the ending (no pun intended)
A Christmas delight - highly recommended to parents and teachers - I'll be recommending this to KS1 friends and colleagues
