It has been a while since I’ve a historical romance book so Never Wager with a Wallflower really came in clutch.
This is my first Virginia Heath book so I went in blind without any expectations and boy oh boy did I enjoy it to the fullest! A light-hearted romance read set in regency era, which really takes you back (even though I have not lived in that time period lol). The characters were witty and there was never a dull moment. If you want an enemies to lovers trope book set in regency era, this is THE book for you.
Overall, I had a great time reading this and I will definitely check out Virginia’s back catalogue and future releases.
Thank you to NetGalley and Headline for providing me an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I have been wanting to read a Virginia Heath book for ages and when I stumbled upon this one on Netgalley I knew I had to request it. I was so happy when I got approved and was very excited to be able to read this book. And let me tell you: it did not disappoint at all!
In fact I adored this lovely lighthearted story about 2 very guarded people gradually opening up and being vulnerable with each other.
This is the last book in a series and it feels that way. It all really comes together at the epilogue and I really want to go back and read the other 2 in the series. Normally I would’ve frantically read the first 2 before diving into this, but since my new year’s resolution (I know, I am finally keeping one! I am seriously proud of myself for sticking with it), was to read more books out of order in a series where the focus is on different main couples, this was great practice!
Venus and Galahad both have been through the ringer and even though this is the third book in the series you really don’t feel like you are missing bits and pieces from the previous books. I do have to say the family dynamics of the Merriwell sisters and their partners were a little bit confusing and overwhelming in the beginning, but the amazing banter between all the members really made up for it and you slowly get a feel about the family as you are reading.
First of all let’s talk about the setting because we are in the middle of autumn and this book takes place at the end of the year around and at christmas time and it really gave me all the cozy christmas story vibes. The snow falling gave this such a great added layer and the entire story feels like a walk outside after a snowstorm. I mean, that first kiss, it really had me swooning. Actually, the entire second half of this book had me swooning to be honest.
Like I mentioned before this is a story about 2 people who have been hurt before and are really guarded as a result. Initially Venus does not like Galahad at all and she has a lot of preconceived notions about him, which is exactly Gal’s intention. I really thought the story was headed in a way that I really do not like (one of the mc’s lying or refraining from telling the truth), but to my pleasant surprise it didn’t! It reminded me of one of my favorite historical romance books and from that point on I was thoroughly enchanted with this story.
How this conflict was resolved was very refreshing and it ended up with the initially hurt MC to confess they were also overreacting due to past experiences. The character work that was put into this was just simply amazing.
Another lovely element of this was the high stakes card games. These were so much fun! I was right there with the family and taking sides and cheering people on. I loved the focus on them.
The side characters of the orphanage were amazing and I want a series featuring the twins and Billy. Do you hear me Virginia? I need it. There, I said what I said.
The reverend and his wife, I mean, it’s like I was reading scenes featuring my husband and myself.
Also, if you have read Forever your Rogue by Erin Langston: Galahad has Nate Travers DILF vibes written all over him and he made me swoon multiple times.
I could go on forever about this book, seriously I won’t shut up about it. It makes me regret not picking up a Virginia Heath novel before.
Thank you to Netgalley and Headline for providing this ARC.
"Never Wager with a Wallflower" by Virginia Heath is a charming and entertaining historical romance. Set in the Regency era, the story is filled with wit and delightful characters, as a wager sets off a series of humorous and heartwarming events. Heath's storytelling captures the essence of the period, with engaging characters and a clever plot. This novel is a lighthearted and enjoyable read for fans of Regency romance.
Wonderful little romp through a historical enemies to lovers romance. I’ve not read the previous two books in the series but I don’t feel like I couldn’t enjoy Never Wager with a Wallflower because of that.
Gal and Venus felt inevitable and reading Gal realise his feelings for Venus was delicious!
A very enjoyable read which nicely completes the trilogy. Although part of a trilogy, this can be read as a standalone as it doesn’t rely on previous books to progress the story, as each tells the love story of a different sister, with the others just making appearances in subsequent books. The romance is full of misunderstandings and pride, yet has a lovely HEA, and an epilogue which nicely finished off the series. I’d recommend definitely
The third and final installment of the Merriwell Sisters series did not disappoint. I've enjoyed all 3 books in the series, but this one was my favourite. We follow Venus and Galahad, who are both aware of the ridiculousness of their names, as they go from disliking, to friends, to something more with fall outs and hijinks along the way.
I felt like I really understood Venus as a character, I think most people who date men could...the little exerts from her diaries as she grew up really added something to the story.
All in all this was a really fun romance that had me staying up to finish it when I really should have been sleeping.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the free eARC of this book.
1.75/5 stars! I do not get this book. Like there's enemies to lovers and then there's "two people have nothing in common and shouldn't be together." There were a few funny moments, so it'll get almost 2 stars from me, but nothing else was redeeming about it.
I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story of Regency love and delicious misunderstandings. Venus and Galahad were made for each other, and it was delightful waiting for when they would realise this for themselves. Totally recommended.
This was the last in a series. I hadn't read the others but that didn't matter. It worked as a standalone book. A fun Regency romp! Will go back and read the earlier ones now.
This is the first book I have ever read from this author and it is always a treat to find a new author who has a back list of books.
The two central characters of Galahad and Venus ( i loved the names) where both interesting and well written and it gave a new take on the typical books of that time period. People who move in society, but who are also working people, who are both faced with the trials of trying to run an orphanage and a gaming establishment. Interesting support characters with the orphans and members of Vee and Gal's family.
and can I just say that the idea that £4000 would buy a huge country house made modern me smile
I’m not really one for regency novels, but this looks to be a sure fire hit! I cannot wait to dive in share, my thoughts, and acquire this for readers! I love the chemistry featured between the two main characters and can’t wait to see how this book unfolds. More to come soon!
